"Yes, it seems so. At least the progress is slow. It is, after all, only herbs and water. But the water is getting too hot, and the flavor strange. I have no need for human preservatives." The boy was obviously not doing very well on his own, so Emerwyn decided to help him out. "So, Lucas. What did you do, before your untimely arrival to our sweet little prison?" She also needed to show him that she was certainly not senstive to her condition any longer, not outwardly, anyway.

When she said 'human' it bothered him. What did she think of herself? "Have you thought about brewing a more natural tea instead of using the packets? It may be more enjoyable." He thought of the different shows he'd seen where people took leaves and herbs and made their own tea. He wished he could offer her more than that, but he was not much of a tea drinker.
"Me? I worked parttime as a waiter and librarian. And in my free time I worked on my website. What about you?"

She nodded in consideration of Lucas had said. True, she'd thought of that. But she had yet to find herbs she found very familiar as far as tea was concered. If only Ketta were here. A librarian. This sparked Emerwyn's attention. "I was the owner-in-part of a small New York City bookshoppe. I spent most of my life in America in that little building. A website? What was this website about?" Emerwyn did not use the computer very much, except for neccessary transactions. She believed that anything to be learned could be learned in books.

"I was just some kid who put books away and taught people how to use the new computer system the library set up. It must have been nice to work and own a bookshoppe." He scratched his cheek. "My website is... was centered around the paranormal. Mostly I researched and wrote about legends, myths, aliens, and different conspiracy theories. And I would talk and debate with others online."

"It was indeed; very nice... "The paranormal..." Emerwyn smiled. "I suppose what you have seen here does not come as much of a surprise to you, then."

"To be truthful, it was a surprise. I mean, I've heard of human testing, but nothing quite like this. I came here thinking I would be doing field work, tracking a mysterious animal. Instead I run into a werewolf named Ambrose and find out that people are being turned into animals. That was a bit of shocker. I definately wasn't prepared for that. Took me a little while to swallow everything. Not that I didn't believe him, it's just... well, you hope to one day to have the truth revealed, but you don't really expect to become part of it. Not like this. I don't think anyone could be prepared for something like this to happen to them" He was going to gesture towards her, but kept his hand on the table. "I'd heard about a lot of strange things, but I didn't always believe everything I heard." He realized he was rambling and popped the brussel sprout he'd been playing with into his mouth.

Emerwyn's face turned - was it sympathetic? "Ambrose is a good man. It is a good thing that you had learned the truth about this place from one with such integrity as he. You bring up a very good point. I myself had always fancied that I believed that anything was possible, that strange things did happen - we just needed to open our eyes. This was not what I expected, either." She closed her eyes, sipping her tea. It was clear that she was savoring every sensation that came with the steaming cup.

"Yeah, Ambrose seemed like a nice guy. I unfortunately got him at a bad time." He recalled the poor man bent over in pain as his body altered before his eyes.
Quickly he brought himself back to the present and he nodded to Emerwyn. "So... what's it like?" It had been one of the bigger questions he had held back, but he finally mustered the courage to ask.

It was a bold question for the anxious young man, and it took Emerwyn by surprise. But, she could not simply remain silent. The boy did deserve to be prepared as much as possible for what lay ahead.
She looked off even more distant now. It was clear that this time she was not looking at Lucas at all. It was as though she were trying to see something far off that would help her to explain. "Every time it happens, it becomes harder to remember. It begins with a dream... and the dream always ends the same way. I awaken, in a fathomless pain. Nothing, nothing at all can distract from the pain. It is only after the burning begins to subside that you even realize what is happening." She gave a shuddering sigh, and closed her eyes once before continuing, now looking back at Lucas. "It is in these moments of silence that you begin to feel... different. It is as though your perception of the entire world has changed overnight. And yet, you are still you. I do not understand it any more than I had a year ago, when it all began." At length, she grew silent, and set down her cup.

As he listened, Lucas watched Emerwyn and observed her expressions. Of course he could say he was a big man and pain didn't scare him, but that was a lie. Nobody liked pain and nobody should be okay with receiving it, especially when it's being forced on you. Those who did were crazy. Looking at her hands, he wondered how much it hurt her as her fingers changed. Without thinking about it, he looked at his own hands, then quickly turned his head back up toward Emerwyn.
"I'm sorry to bring that up." He wished he could take back his question, or at least do something to cheer her up. Her silence made him worry. "I've been here for a while, but I've only spoken briefly with Ambrose. Now you." He wondered if Ambrose and Emerwyn arrived around the same time.
A quick change of subject was needed. "So, know of any nice people on the Island? Excluding yourself." He smiled.

It took a moment for Emerwyn to snape out of phase. This, as Lucas did not know, was a regular occurance for her. When he changed the subject, she looked at him, and smiled sweetly. He really was a kind young man. "Do not worry. It does not plague me as much as it did in my weaker days. Everyone here is here under the same curse. So it is hard to find a person who will not extend a hand to you. Even though there are those who find a great difficulty in looking beyond their own pain, and their emotions come out as unbiased aggresion. But relationships made here are stronger, in that we are bonded by our fate." Maybe that's why it was so easy for me to fall in love with Ian.

His little 'excluding yourself' comment he would admit was dorky, but it at least got him a smile. It relieved him some. He didn't like to see women depressed and he really didn't like it when he helped bring about it. Even if he wasn't the one causing the pain.
"Ambrose did warn me about some people who have become rather dangerous in reaction to their changes." He hoped he did not become like that. "It would probably be best if I avoided them." Knowing his luck and timing he'd likely find himself in trouble.

Emerwyn nodded. "Though I must warn you, avoiding them is not very easy. But, also keep in mind this bit of advice. These 'dangerous' victims, they are still people, underneath it all. Sometimes, it is safe to give them a chance. They deserve it just as much as you do." She thought of Pyroth. He had attacked her on more than one occasion, and still they had managed to maitain a makeshift friendship.

"Yes, I know." He shifted in his seat. "I just sometimes do or say the wrong thing," he added softly, speaking off to the side while he adjusted his glasses.
"Did you hear the announcement yesterday?"

"Do not think on it. It is an understandable reaction."
"Yes... I seem to remember hearing something." It was vague to her. She had been working hard yesterday, puzzling out more words she had discovered in the recesses of her mind. "What I remember most was his voice. It was far more cruel than ever I'd heard it before... What was said, I do not know. What has happened now? It is certainly not another black-out. We would already know if that were so."
