VAs seem to have so much fun at cons. Voice acting is something I'd love to do on the side, but I know the field is impossible to penetrate w//o knowing someone.

Honestly? VO work is my dream job. I would love nothing more than to do that. But, as you said, the field is nigh impossible to get into. I tell people I don't even try because I won't let my family suffer while I hope to be "discovered."

Yeah, the communicative arts are a tough field to be in when trying to support a family. It's not worth it as a primary career choice, but doing something on the side wouldn't be so bad.
