"...we should make him a cake." But not a normal cake, oh no.

"I figured he'd be germ proof." He was fireproof, waterproof and heat-cold resistant, it made sense. " I haven't noticed him painting more often than usual, but I think he's depressed." She started to smile at Toby's suggestion. "One with marshmallow frosting?"

Toby shook his head. Oh, no. This would be special.
"I was thinking made of marshmallows. Come on. Let's get to the store before it closes." Immediately he was up and headed for his jacket and keys.

That earned Toby a puzzled expression. How could someone make a cake out of marshmallows? "Alright," She said, pulling on her coat and following. "Do we need anything else for it? Frosting?"

"Think texturally. Whipped cream, maybe? Real thick." Toby was pondering over ingredients as they went. "We'll figure it out when we get there."
It had been a cake pan covered in oiled parchment paper and a few extra-large marshmallows melted for the cake, frosted in a thick layer of real whipped cream and decorated with Jell-O cubes and candy orange slices. Toby had taught Maia how to pipe hearts to decorate to her heart's content, and then it was under the cake dome to protect from Pumpkin.
Dari returned around 10 the following morning, looking a bit 'off' as per usual. Toby was already awake and grinned broadly.
"Hey, you! Welcome back! How was work?"
"Uneventful..."

"Good morning Dari!" Maia greeted her favorite alien. She was in the kitchen making sure Peaches hadn't gotten to the cake. She went over to hug him.

Peaches had not.
"Good morning," Dari said, smiling and giving Maia a hug.
"We have a surprise for you, if you're up for breakfast," Toby said.
"Breakfast...?" Of course Dari didn't generally eat breakfast.

"Yeah, breakfast. Come sit down at the table, Dari." Maia led him to the dining room, and then went into the kitchen. "Toby, can I bring the surprise out now?"

"Of course," Toby said with a nod. He went out with Maia to barely oil a knife so it could be cut and then met her back in the dining room.
Dari had already sat down and was looking rather confused. A...cake? Why?

"We made this for you," Maia said, as the cake was set on the table. "I did the hearts," she pointed to them, then kissed Dari on the cheek. Hopefully this would cheer him up. She hated seeing him so down.

Dari's hairless brow furrowed, and then Toby cut him a decent slice from the cake, revealing its marshmallowy insides. A grin split Dari's face and he laughed.
"Thank you," he said, and he looked up at the two as if he wanted to hug them but couldn't stand with them around him, which was the truth. "When did you do this?"
Toby handed him the knife to cut off bits to eat, but he chose a gummy candy first and took a bite.

"Last night,"Maia said. She wouldn't mention that it'd been an attempt to cheer him up--not when it seemed to be so successful! She sat down next to Dari. "Do you like it?"

"Of course I do!" Dari said. They had been thinking of him when he wasn't there. That was very sweet. It meant a lot. It filled a bit of a hole in his heart, figuratively speaking. He took his first bite of marshmallow and nodded. "How did you do this?"
"Baked them."
"Really?"
"Yup!"

"I'd never thought of baking marshmallows before Toby showed me," Maia said. "I'll show how how." She smiled at him.

Dari just smiled and continued eating.
"We're just going to make some quick breakfast for ourselves. We'll be right back."
Dari nodded and made an assenting noise around a cube of Jell-O. Toby just smiled and nodded for Maia. "What're you feeling for breakfast?"
