Hey there guys, I was wondering if anyone had any good tips for the kind of fabric I should use to make my prom dress. I'm using this pattern, and I'm going to adjust it so that the bodice is more pointed in the front and back. My color scheme is midnight blue and silver for the embellishments.

I'm trying to find a somewhat shiny or glossy fabric that doesn't show sweat stains and doesn't trap body heat. Then I'll use a simple underlining and lining for the bodice, and just a lining for the skirt. On top of that, I'm thinking of adding a layer of some sheer fabric that has sparklies (lolz) on it on two of the panels for the corset, and either the whole of the dress, or just a small gathering in the back. And I would like to make some sort of a cancan to fill out the dress.

I'm also going to use a frog closure for the top, and am thinking of adjusting the neckline to either a queen anne or a modified sweetheart.

Price is obviously important here, so if you know somewhere that has good quality, yet affordable fabric for the main layer, then I would like to know.

I also plan to make a test garment, so any tips of adjusting patterns will be most welcome!

I would use silk, satin, or Taffeta for the main fabric. You could also use chiffon, which I really like because it's elegant and flows nicely, but it's not as shiny.
For a layer of sheer, I would suggest organza. And the pattern looks like it has a tulle lining, which will give it a little poof. (I'm very fond of dresses with a little tulle peeking out the bottom)

I'm not sure what kind of fabric stores are around where you live, but I buy most of my fabrics at fabricland. I would definitely suggest you go to an actual store though, and don't buy online. Personally, I like to feel my fabric, and see the colors together before I buy it. Unfortunately, good fabrics are a little on the expensive side, and you will need a lot. But if you look around at a few different stores before you buy you can probably find a good deal. Just make sure to go get your fabrics soon, because I bet most places will increase their prices on "Prom dress fabrics" the closer it gets to prom.

Thanks for your advice. ^^ Unfortunately, there's just too much going on for me to dedicate enough time to make a dress. So I'm going to try and find one I like. I think I'm going to go for a 'Belle' look (as in Belle's dress). I think it would flatter my top half, and hide my butt. xD

But I do plan to make a fancy dress one of these days. So I'll pocket your advice into the depths of the grid. *hint hint wink wink*

Ugh. And this is one of the biggest reasons I HATE Valentine's Day. If you're single, you're basically expected to feel all lonely and sorry for yourself, and it doesn't help that Valentine's Day is shoved in your face for the whole month of February, so by the time the 14th actually comes around, you either see singles whining about being alone or you see them defensively arguing that they don't NEED a Valentine this year because they have friends and family, etc. Good job geniuses, it took you feeling like s**t about being single to realize there is more to love than someone you can ********?

And I don't just hate it when I'm single. When you're in a relationship, you are pretty much expected to rub it in everyone's face that you are in a relationship. Then you are expected to go out and buy gifts and flowers and chocolates, then go out for a fancy dinner in a crowded restaurant with a hundred other pathetic couples. And if your day doesn't go perfectly, or you don't get to be together, the couples whine worse than the singles! Like their entire relationship is dependent on being together on Valentine's Day.

I would much rather stay home and have some friends over for a movie night or something, because Valentine's Day is a load of crap. Oh, I'm sure it's sooo nice to get presents on V-Day, but am I getting a gift because you actually want to get me something I would love, or because it's a social obligation created by this stupid, sorry excuse for a holiday?

It helps when you don't expect anything of yourself. Honestly today is just a Monday to me.

Really? Today is when I play Final fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus. It's all about Valentine! Vincent Valentine that is. And in the end, is it not the goal of EVERY day to amass a certain amount of headshots, and explosive kills? neutral
