My only comments:

Storm Troopers had better become a hell of a lot more expensive for this mess of them suddenly gaining an AP3 weapon. Outside of that, that Bane Wolf tank had better cost more than the Hellhound. It's the ultimate Marine Killer tank at current. Templates autohit, and it's a poisoned 2+ weapon. This is really just...overdone.

I wonder if they let any of the interns run the design process on this one, too?

Both the Marine and Guard codices were written by people who'd never done so before.

@Lady Blodwynn- Oh, there's plenty of things I'm excited about. Finally being able to use my Valkyrie in normal combat, the inclusion of tons of different kinds of tanks, PENAL LEGION! I'm certainly happy about a fair number of things. I just don't understand the reasoning behind well... any of it.

When I thought Phill Kelly had made the most BS codex out there (yes orks, I've seen some damn good BS lists, but where's the fun of playing orks if yer not doin' it proppa 'n orky?) untill I saw all the rumours about the guard codex... The creator of it must be high or something! Sure, there's some things I don't mind, but some things I sure do hope will be pretty damn expensive!

On the subject of Penal Legions....which Necromunda gang looks most Armageddon-esque? None of them look like Armageddon Hive gangers as depicted in Codex: Armageddon but Delaque probably comes close. Orlock is too Catachan and the Van Saars seem too technologically savvy and rich to be drafted as meatshields.

I'd say that people from Delaque would work really well. The trench coats that they've got look like they were just given some surplus gear and told "Hey, go for it."

I for one am happy that we'll be getting such a massive guard overhaul. back in 4th ed, my two armies, (orks and guard) have been relatively equal. Ever since retooling the orks with the release of the new codex, They've won all but two battles against the proud men of tallarn.

Now I'll have an opportunity to revamp my guard army in a way that will bring their performance back up. Sure, some things seem downright wrong, such as AP3 hellguns, (I'd have made hellguns a 4-6) but that's nothing compared to the awesome vehicles we'll be able to use. Medusas? Valkyries? Awesome. Hell, They're even bringing back some special characters! Tell me Al-Rahim or Nork Dedog won't be welcomed back.

I can't tell you how thrilled I am to see a new and improved guard list. It's been far too long.

You know what's missing? A new Lord Solar character. I personally -loved- Macharius and used him in a few battles. Of course, Creed is effectively a Lord Solar with all of the sway that he holds on Cadia and the surrounding worlds.

To be honest, I never witnessed official rules for Al'rahim or Chenkov. I know that they're a Tallarn and Valhallan commander, respectively. Anyone feel like letting me in on what their deals were/are?

If storm troopers are going to cost more than 10 points they wouldn't be worth taking any more. Remember that the hellgun is still strength 3, so it might take some shots yet to wound that marine or ork first.

The Hellhound is an expensive tank that really needs to be fast to be really useful. Especially now that the range has been cut from 24" to template according to that reference sheet the Hellhound will become a whole lot less effective. You fire once and hope for the best before the foe charges your tank and almost certainly kills it.

Robin Cruddance is behind this codex, he helped Phil Kelly with the Lizardman army book and has been with the design team for almost two years now.

They had rules written for them by Andy Chambers ages ago, nothing too impressive. Both counted as captains for the 3rd edition codex.

Al'Rahem (65): 4 4 3 3 2 4 3 9 5+
Wargear: Plasma pistol, power sword
Special Rules: Enemy suffer an additional -1 Ld if they lose an assault against Al'Rahem

Chenkov (60): 5 4 3 3 3 4 3 10 4+
Wargear: Bolt pistol, power sword, frag & krak grenades
Special rule: All Imperial Guard units with a model within 12" may re-roll failed morale checks (including Chenkov’s squad)

Actually, the Hellhound's range is still extended. On the reference sheet, it says template but has an asterisk next to it. From what I heard, it's 12" with the template laid wherever. That still puts it tight into enemy range, however.

Hm...

This is the case, actually. Even at 12" (I heard 18") that's far better than what they had before. The old OLD rules used just the template, and they wouldn't allow the hellhound to fire forwards if the vehicle moved that turn, only off the vehicle's side or rear.

The old rules also made the Hellhound a joke in regard to hits: all glancing hits counted as penetrating instead due to the fuel tanks on the back.

well, read the WW2 history about all the specialized variants of sherman that were introduced before D-Day - IG works much like that, a tank for every situation... I'd love to see flamethrower-armed Leman russ, for example, or Kangaroo LR transport. Anyway probably most use will see the most versatile vehicles. Valkyrie is just so cool... insert Apocalypse Now footage razz
I hope hellgun rumored ap3 is fake, because with possible stormtroopers-as-troops that would mean I'd move to Deathwing.
