Toby was overtired and cold, but he didn't care. He'd stopped the coffee consumption early enough that he'd be able to sleep once the sun was up and now sat with Maia on a blanket on their roof, wrapped in the warmth of a comforter and each other.
They had played games with Dari until it was time to start waiting, and the alien had refused their offer to join them. Something was going on with him. Toby would have to talk with him, but later. After the sunrise. He leaned against Maia as the first colors began to peek over the horizon, then turned his head and kissed her cheek.

Maia almost didn't make it to sunrise. Her eyelids felt heavy and the warmth from the comforter--and Toby, made it tempting to fall asleep. She watched the sky light up with trails of pinks. She smiled.
"Its beautiful," she said. "I'm glad I get to share this with you."

Toby smiled. "Me too."
When was the last time he had watched the sunrise with a loved one? So long... forty years and then some. It was nice to be able to do again.
"I love you, Maia. I'm sorry for everything I've ever done."

Maia turned her attention to Toby then, blinking. "Sorry, why?" she asked. "These past few months have been the best." She kissed his cheek. "This year will be even better!"

"Because I was horrible, and I was ignorant, and I hurt you," Toby said, giving her another cheek kiss. "Thank God for Dari knowing how to set me straight, right?"

Maia was starting to frown. "You weren't horrible," she corrected, stroking his hair. "You were scared. And it's understandable." Anyone would be scared, after losing their loved ones like Toby had. She leaned against him. "I was so afraid it'd be selkie love and I'd end up hurting you."

Toby smiled. She did understand, but she didn't HAVE to. She chose to. That was a great gift.
"Well. I'm not lonely at all, and you're still here. Plus you're a halfie, right? So maybe you can't even feel selkie love. Otherwise I'm sure you would have been drawn to someone on the beaches, or in that burger joint..."

Maia let her hand drop, instead taking his. "I thought so," She said. "I thought if It was selkie love I would've experienced it before." But she'd had to ask Dari about the feelings that came with new attraction. "I love you."

Now Toby leaned over and captured her lips for a soft kiss.
"I love you too." He squeezed her hand and bounced it affectionately.

She returned the kiss and smiled, before her eyes trailed back to the sky. "It looks so small and far away in the afternoon," She said, "Just like all those unhappy things." They had each other now, and things were pretty close to perfect. "Ready to head to bed?" She asked.

He stroked Maia's hair affectionately and nodded. "Sure. Come on."
He stood and grabbed the blankets, then headed down the ladder so he could foot it for Maia.It was cold. He was tired. He didn't care.

With Toby safely on the ground, Maia started down after him. She yawned, and when her feet hit the ground, stretched. "Lets sleep past noon," she suggested.

"Let's just sleep until we wake up," Toby said with a smile and yawned in reaction to Maia's. He put the ladder back and took blankets and girlfriend inside. With Dari nowhere in sight he assumed the alien was up in his own room and so headed straight for bed.

Dari was disappearing into himself. Toby noticed it day by day. He still smiled, still laughed, but he left the house less. He was feeling down, obviously. He'd bet it had something to do with everyone around him having a significant other, or maybe it was something else? It was hard to tell with Dari unless he was asked directly.
One evening, while Dari was working the overnight shift, Toby turned to Maia.
"Has Dari seemed 'off' to you lately?"

"He has," Maia nodded, looking concerned. "I thought he might have some sort of alien cold or something. He's been off since Christmas. I want to make him something to help." What would he like, though? Marshmallows? Soup? No... Soup hadn't helped Toby last time she'd tried cheering someone up.
