I don't think they deflect them... vaporize them maybe, but not deflection.

Only to vaporize metal, the energy would have to be REALLY REALLY hot, about 3000K. Most stuff can't be vaporized, however, unless you're willing to incinerate the local atmosphere and create a very brief sun
