Luca gave a baffled expression. The same but also not the same. Huh. That was about as clear as tomato soup!
"Do you want to hold Peaches?" Maia offered the cat to Dari.

Dari accepted the look of shock. That was what most people got if they didn't want to get all... theoretical and philosophical. He couldn't explain the way he saw any better than a human could explain color to a person born blind. He laughed slightly at Maia's offer and nodded. "Sure."
Toby had asked his permission as to whether Maia could have a cat or not. He appreciated the consideration. He rather liked this cat, actually. He laid the cat between his thighs and rubbed its belly. Peaches kneaded the air.
"How many colors can you see?" Toby asked.
"Approximately two dozen. It depends on your perception of color."
"Ah."

"Two dozen on Peaches?" Maia asked, surprised. Dari seemed to like the newest addition to their family; was Peaches Dari's younger brother or his nephew? Or did labels not apply to pets? "So what do we do at midnight?" she asked. Shed watched fireworks go off before, but what did they do afterward?
"I think most people get drunk and or go to bed," Luca said. He had no more experience with the holiday than the selkie.

"No, no. Two dozen in total," Dari said with a dismissive wave of the hand.
Lori shook his head. "Several million, by our counts."
"No..."
"Yes. Blue and baby blue and pastel blue are all different colors."
"If you say so."
"At midnight you kiss your girlfriend," Toby said, looking to Maia, and then gestured to Lori, "Or boyfriend."
"Ten seconds before there's a countdown, and then it's a new year," Lori said, "and, yeah. Most people get far too drunk or don't do anything."

Maia was grinning. She'd thought she remembered Toby complaining that Dari saw more colors than he did. "So you counted all blues and all greens as the same?" she asked. She gave Toby a quick kiss. "I see. A kiss to start off the new year!"
Luca took Lori's drink from him and sipped at it some more. "I've never been drunk," he commented, "it's always sounded miserable."

Dari nodded. "Yes. He asked how many colors I could see, not how many shades."
Lori rolled his eyes and gave Dari an affectionate slap on the back. Dari smiled to him.
"Hey, hey, slow down," Toby said, "Save some for midnight!"
Lori then turned to Luca. "No? I try to stop at 'tipsy'."
Toby gave the elf a knowing look, which was returned with a threatening glance. Don't you dare.

"Shades are colors," Maia said. She smiled at Toby. "There'll be plenty for midnight," she promised. Plenty for the whole year!
"No, why would I? People act strange, they get headaches and get sick." Luca shook his head. He snuggled against Lori. "After fireworks, bed?"

"Ugh, Red! You're so old! Bed at midnight?!" he sipped his drink and sobered immediately, "No yeah, I'm totally going to bed after this."
Lori laughed. "Oh, you're going to bed with Luca tonight? I wasn't told we were swapping."
Toby laughed initially, then grabbed Maia and held her close, waving a finger in a 'no' gesture.

Maia pouted. "I wanted to see the first sunrise with you," she said. She kissed his cheek. "I'll set out blankets outside, if you want." The television popped up with a countdown starting at a minute, then going down from there.
"I don't like this swapping idea..." Luca muttered, wrapping his arms around Lori.

Toby looked to Maia curiously. The first sunrise? That was... beautiful. It warmed his heart. He smiled and kissed her cheek back. "We can do that," he said softly.
Lori kissed Luca's cheekbone. It was just a joke, no need to worry. Dari idly noticed how odd it looked to have such a large man in an even larger lap.

Maia smiled brightly. "I'll make coffee," she promised. The ten second warning went off, and then, fireworks began. Maia kissed Toby before turning her attention to the television. They were beautiful; and this year would be even better! But what could top 2015? New friend's, a family, Seamus--but most of all, Toby.
Luca kissed Lori, and smiled when it broke. "Happy new year, love."

Toby grinned and kissed Maia as midnight struck, holding it and keeping it strongly. When it broke he was still grinning.
Lori laughed and cupped Luca's head in his hands as they kissed. When it broke, he said, "Happy new year."
Dari simply sat there with Peaches. All facial expression had fled. Toby glanced over to him. ...poor guy.
At approximately midnight and twelve seconds, Toby leaned over and grabbed Dari's head to kiss him briefly but dramatically. "MUAH. Happy new years, Slimebag." His smile was honest and apologetic for leaving him out. Dari seemed surprised, then smiled and laughed.

Maia watched Toby kiss Dari. She was grinning. She leaned against Toby after a moment. "Happy New year Dari!" She scooped Seamus up and kissed him. "Happy new year kitty!"
Luca didn't move as he watched the fireworks. "They're beautiful."

Seamus was entirely confused as he was lifted, but then he reached out and booped Maia's face gently.
Lori had been watching Luca. He loved that face; the one he made when he was in awe of something, when he found something beautiful. It was much better than fireworks. He kissed Luca's temple and smiled.

Maia beamed, setting Seamus down in her lap. She scratched behind his ears. "I love you, Seamus," she said.
"Do you think we can see fireworks in person someday?" Luca asked.
