On the subject of post lengths, I'm a huge fan of minimalism. I read Clash's posts and genuinely like them. The big problem with short posts is that it becomes nearly impossible to convey complex thoughts or emotions. Interesting posts with good characterization are almost always long posts.
Yeah, but that's the opposite end of the spectrum. Too minimal because there should still be a good aspect of RP in this, not simply the actions. Not necessarily even complex thoughts or emotions. For a fight those can be pretty straightforward.
But you could always spice things up with a bit of description and elaboration. Throw in something about the environment, the crowd, etc.
I also like to get in the fighter's head and really see things from their perspective. It's too easy to simply read and interpret an opponent's attack and think "OK, so my best option is to do this." But in the heat of battle, you won't necessarily think of the very best course of action to take next.
But there's really no need to get very technical with fight posts or very flowery with descriptions. I used to note every last little detail of every attack, down to the exact positioning of the body and blah blah blah. More and more I'm realizing a lot of that is implicit so long as you don't leave gaping holes for your opponent to exploit, like to say your guard was down or you had a certain side of the body open to attack.
I dunno, fights and stuff... *wanders off, muttering to himself*
