Andarien looked up at Lin and nodded. "Okay."

Of course, all he had really known was life on the road, so it came as no surprise to him.

"Where do I look for that?" he asked, blinking up at her.

"These cloths over here," Lin lightly tapped on the pile that the tailor had showed them, "Are more durable, so we'll be making your travel clothes out of one of these, but the choice is yours."

Since they were all going to have to be tailored made, it wasn't like Gaia where things could be massed produced and even then she didn't think anyone in the family had brought factory made clothes in years if ever.

At that, the tailor blinked. "One?" he repeated. "Forgive me, but I thought you said three suits for traveling ..."

They didn't all have to be the same, did they?

Andarien looked up at Lin. "Nana, what's one and what's three?" he asked her, confused.

"Or more if he wishes," Lin amended.

She was so use to the children haven't a specific colour taste that she rarely considered there being more than one.

"One is one thing,"
she held up a finger, "Like one finger. So three is..."

She held up three fingers.

"This many fingers. It is a number."

It was official they had to begin Andarien's lessons soon otherwise things were going to become difficult.

"I think Mommy is use to some of us liking one main colour and everything else is trim," Miyuki told the tailor, "Most of us are like that."

"That being said you can chose up to three colours,"
Lin told Andarien.

Andarien looked at his hand and held up three fingers. "One ... three," he counted, tapping his index and ring fingers. He blinked, then put them down and held his middle finger up to Lin. "What's that finger?"

The tailor chuckled and set the bolts out so that Andarien could see all of them from the end. "Just starting to learn, I see," he grinned.

Lessons.... she thought, which meant she needed supplies for him as well. Well, she supposed they could hold that off and just go with oral lessons.

"That's your middle finger...."
she paused and then added, "And... you might not want to show just your middle finger like that in public, in some cultures that's a rude gesture."

And she wasn't going to explain why, but it was.

"It is?" Earendil blinked.

Andarien wasn't bothered, though. He simply smiled and held up his three fingers again and counted, "One ... middle ... three!" Then he began to peer at the different fabrics in front of him, trying to choose which three he would like.

She paused a bit and looked up at Earendil thoughtfully.

"Ah yes... I forgot, that goes along with why would anyone want to swear. Showing your middle finger to a person is a rude gesture that suggests you do not take their action or words kindly in a very rude way in many Gaian cities."

"The middle number is two," Miyuki whispered to Andarien, "Mommy thought you wanted to know what your finger was called."

Earendil frowned in confusion. "All right," he murmured, not sure if it was a good place for them to get into such a discussion. "If you say so."

Andarien blinked up at Miyuki. "It's called a finger," he said simply. He turned his attention back to the bolts of cloth. "Um ... this one and this one and this one," he decided, pointing at bolts of green, blue and yellow fabric.

"Yes, but you showed mommy your middle finger, so she thought you wanted to know what that finger was called. You didn't ask her what was the number between one and three."

Miyuki wondered if she had been like this, but a lot of her first learning had been in Gaia rather than on the road so that might have been the difference.

"I'll try to explain better, later in private and not in front of the children."

Andarien didn't know that fingers had different names. Well, perhaps now he did, but he hadn't before.

The tailor smiled at Andarien's choices and turned to Lin to see if she approved of them. "I think he's made his decision," he said, indicating the green, blue and yellow that Andarien had picked out.

Andarien smiled up at Lin. "Is that okay, Nana?"

"That's fine," Lin nodded.

So he would have at least a few choices.

The tailor smiled widely. "All right then."

He put the extra bolts away, then held his hands out to Andarien. "Come here, you," he said amiably. "Up on the table so I can get your measurements."

He put Andarien on the table, then reached for his tape measure and began to measure the boy.

"What about you two?" he asked, looking at Aethos and Alassëa. "Come along to watch? Or will you be needing some new clothes as well?"

"Watch?" Alassëa repeated with a smile. "That would be a trick."

"Alassea cannot see," Lin explained softly.

From what she could tell, Alassea was use to this mistake.

"Ah, I apologize," the tailor smiled, bowing slightly. "I didn't ..."

He trailed off slowly, blinking at her, still slightly bowed. "Wait," he murmured, his tone filled with wonder. "Al ... Alassëa? Did you say her name is Alassëa?"

"She is blind, not deaf," Aethos spoke up, slightly amused but mostly intrigued by the man's response to learning her name. "It is quite safe to speak directly to her."
