*Maggie halts as he turns away, and twists her hands together. Part of her just wants to retreat again . . . but she won't let herself. Not this time. This matters to much to her. He matters to much to her. She moves forward again until they're only a few feet apart.*

Bard . . . *her voice is quiet, uncertain, but loving* Will ye not tell me what 'tis that's weighing on ye . . ?

*Bard stoops to lift another shelf, but pauses as the words leave her lips. He sighs, then begins to lift the shelf*

It's not important right now. Let's just worry about cleaning up the library.

*It would be so much easier to do that, to just focus on the task at hand, and she's tempted . . . but she recognizes that it's only a distraction. Once the library is clean, this will still be here . . . only, given the nature of the Brink, either one of them might not be*

*Maggie reaches out to rest her hand on his arm before he can go to lift another shelf. She's so unsure of herself, and she can't hide it, but she makes herself press on anyways* 'Tisna the library I'm worried about . . . *she angles her head to try and meet his eyes again* Bard, I . . .

*Bard rests his hand on maggie's, but he turns his gaze away from her*

You what?

I . . . *She's at a loss for a moment. She's confused, she's concerned for him, she wishes he would look at her . . . What can she say? What does she want to tell him?*

*She closes her eyes briefly, breathes in and out, then opens them, and just speaks what's in her heart* I dinna know what te say, Bard . . I dinna know what te do, but . . . I'm here. I love ye . . I . . .

Please, *her voice softens even more* Dinna close me out . ..

*Bard grips Maggie's hand, his voice flat and dispassionate*

My mother is sick.

No.

My mother is dying.

*he swallows, his voice hardly more than an intense whisper* She's dying, and all I can do is just sit and watch. And I have to watch, Maggie. Because I'm the only one she has left in the world. Because I... because I ignored her for so many years. Because I've failed her every time she wanted something from me.

And now I get to fail her one last time.

And I don't get another chance.

*he releases her hand and pulls away from her. He retrieves his coat from the chair back where he hung it and begins to put it on. He doesn't look at Maggie*

You should go home to your son, Maggie. I'll finish cleaning when I come back next.

*Maggie's eyes widen at his words, her heart just aching for him. That pain, that absolute agony, of watching somebody you love wither away . . . and she knows, hearing him, that there's so much more hurt to it than that.*

*But still, still he pulls away.* Oh, Bard . . *She whispers, her voice catching on the lump in her throat. She wants so much to comfort him. And he won't even look at her. She can't let him just leave like this . . *

*Following the urge in her heart, she steps forward, to stop him from going, to put her arms around him . .. to try and reach him, somehow . . *

*As Bard buttons his coat, he feels Maggie's arms slide around his waist*

*She holds on to him tightly, as though somehow she could absorb some of the pain he's in and carry it for him* I'm sorry *she whispers against his back* I'm so sorry.

I know . . . it must hurt so much . . *her voice is thick with feeling, with tears she wants to cry for him, but she blinks them back, to tell him* Ye are'na alone . . . ye dinna have te bear this by yerself. I'm here, *she repeats, fervently* I love ye. I love ye.

*Bard trembles at the words, at the sound of her voice. His eyes pool with tears.*

*Gently, he grasps her hands and pries them apart, pulling out of her embrace. He walks away a dozen steps away and pauses, his back to her*

Don't love me.

*Without another word, he walks out of the library*

*Maggie starts to follow after him, then stops as he speaks. The words strike her like a blow, and at first she can only stand there, too stunned and hurt to speak, or even move*

*But as she sees him disappear down the hallway, she finds her feet, and follows after him - she has to*

**Enter Luana and Janani from Main Room, 536**

*Luana looks back over her shoulder as they walk into the Library. For the first time since coming to the Brink, she honestly thinks that she has found someone here that she disliked. Two in fact. What their names were she did not know.*

Argentice

Janani

Though angery at Jonathan, she hides that far from her facial expressions, in the deepest recesses of her mind. He was trying to pick a fight...again! Janani just breaths as the situation catches up with her. She's in a new part of the Brink. She hadn't even been paying attention on the way here. Her mouth becomes agape in awe at the astounding collection of books.

Wow...

*Luana smiles* Cool, huh? Quiet too.

Do you know those two weirdos out there?

Argentice

Janani

Sato and I had a conversation with a glass of human alcohol... That other...human? was calling me a freak the last time we met!

Janani has a tinge of anger at the crest of her voice as she speaks of Jonathan. She has no idea that the human and Death Claw, Kane, are one-in-the same. She quickly shakes the negative feelins to the side as she tries to speak of other things...but she finds it hard.

Just because I'm short and scrawny...
