Hemlocke's backhanded knee-jerk reaction had bought her a little distance, and, with it, time to think. Her toes touched the earth and she was able to take stock of her wounds and assets. She glanced at the battlefield and saw enough energy in the air to power both Big Blue and Little Red, so she had options available to her. Her wound was fairly nasty, and it had injured her deeply enough that even now her left foot rested lightly on its toes, as if she were a limping kitten. Her eye was drawn by her wrist, her pale, nearly translucent skin underlit by the purple venom she could clearly see in her veins. That's... That's gross. Seriously. That's really gross.
Snapping back to reality, Hemlocke decided that her next course of action should be to drain Big Blue so that she could work on getting it charged up again before the battle had dwindled too far. Auracasting would be the best option to her, and she would use that power to further decimate a spider with the next dip into Little Red. Calling the power of the Lucent Sapphire, Hemlocke began to cast the two stage spell necessary to fully utilize the power of that remarkable gemstone.
Chanting under her breath, Hemlocke allowed her journal to flutter open in the air before her, her outstretched hands and splayed fingers on either side of the animated tome. The blue splinters of light in the air began to vibrate before flying toward the space before the witch, each light becoming a new rune or piece of geometric figure as a complex magical circle began inscribing itself in the air between the Shyft's closed, glowing eyes and the spiders that had been drawn into her tangled web of enchantments and self-evaluation.

The spiders seemed to be waiting patiently for Hemlocke to finish casting. In reality, she must have just cleared back further than she thought she had. But no time for distractions. Hemlocke, without missing a beat, moved her hands closer to the center of the circle, which had now been inscribed in its entirety, and formed a ring about four feet in diameter, with an empty space a little over a foot in diamter in its center. The red light in the area began to coalesce in this empty space as Hemlocke chanted, the runes and figures taking shape as she worked. The blue annulus had taken the shape of a brilliant, blue, six-pointed star, and the red circle in the center was an intricate web of lines and runes, dictating the target and purpose of the spell that would be drawing its strength from the Lucent Sapphire's groundwork.
This was the first time Hemlocke had cast a spell this way: both components being constructed outside of her body. Cinematically, it was ******** gorgeous. She couldn't wait to see what it did when she released it. Taking aim at the unharmed spider in the middle of the crowd, Hemlocke caught her journal with her left hand, reading aloud the incantation she had prepared for this Casting. She looked up, snapping the book closed and thrusting her splayed right hand toward the red spell in the center of the magick, bringing it to life.
At her command, the Lucent Sapphire's component began to shift, its various circles and runes turning to align, its energy building until it glowed brightly, sending six beams of light to coalesce into a blue orb in the center of the ring, which had been vacated as the red circle had glided forward, acting as a point through which the spell would be fired. All at once, the energy from the spell blasted forward, delivering a brilliant spear of light to one of the unharmed spiders.

Hemlocke's spell crashed into one of the two spiders that had not suffered damage in this combat, and the spell collided in two stages, the tip of the spear touching the spider softly, and pushing it back to brace itself against the impact, before a split second passed and the rest of the magick collided with the stunned creature, causing it to explode and disintegrate into a shower of red light, as if a bullet had struck a stained glass window. The venom in Hemlocke's blood seemed to have run its course, and she was beginning to feel less like the darkness was clawing her into its depths. Now with only three opponents, Hemlocke's odds of victory climbed higher, and her comfort level rose commensurately. Two spiders bore wounds that would be fatal in the long term under normal circumstances, and one had mostly just been bumbling through this fight without dealing her any cards that couldn't be handled with minimal effort. Everything was going well.
And holy s**t that spell was fun to cast. She was going to have to get used to seeing that one, because it was probably her new favorite. Something about constructing the magick for all to see the component parts and how they fit and worked together made her feel like a real mage, instead of just a pretty rave girl, shooting laser beams and making shiny things.

The Bear continued to not be a threat as it was pelted by yet more bait. For being trapped in a world where it seemed like yer previous skills were useless, she felt very well adjusted as the bear tried and failed to swipe at Glimmer, its paw being kicked away with great force and the resplendant bunny thumping the ground in challenge. Anna-Mia didn't know how long it would take to reform her family, but she was going to do everything conceivable to put them back together. That required having strong allies in this new world. While she had her brother and Hemlocke, she needed potent animal companions if she were going to last in this world for any significant length of time. She had Glitz the Golden Buck and Glimmer the Golden Bunny. All she needed to do was breed them once they were strong enough and she would have a Golden Jackalope companion. That Jackalope would see her through nearly any hardship she could face. The Beastmaster always had a talent for aligning herself with legendary beings. This time would be no different. She pulled back a piece of bait and waited for her chance.

Hemlocke's spell had obliterated one of the unharmed spiders, and she had been charged by the three remaining foes. It wasn't that big a deal, though. The Shyft seemed to be doing well for herself. In an effort to stop the one that seemed most capable from tearing another bite out of her leg, Locke swatted at it and hopped back a bit, magickal light flying from her hand as she struck. Not every attack needed to be a projectile. Sometimes, a superpowered backhand was enough to win the day. And it seemed that this was not one of those times. The light separated from Hemlocke's outstretched fingers and delivered a needle of energy into the assailant's head, causing the creature to wince, but not fall. She grinned as she floated back, and saw enough sapphire light to power Big Blue again. When she touched down, she began to prepare for her next spell. With three spiders left, one of which had yet to be harmed, Hemlocke decided to test her new spellcasting method with a single stage lightcast, and began chanting, holding her journal open before her, turned to a page from which she read the incantation, her opposite hand drawing shapes in the air as a large circle appeared before her. A single orb of light began tracing a path which remained glowing in the air, outlining the pentagram of Venus. Hemlocke would aim this attack at the unharmed spider, hoping to tame it in a single strike. Otherwise, she'd just have to kill it.

The Shyft's spell struck home, a spear of blue light racing toward the creature, but instead of punching a hole through it, the light poured harmlessly over it, wrapping tendrils of glowing power around its body to envelop it in blue light before the spider condensed into a sapphire singularity, tamed by the magick. Up next were the beaten, bruised, and limping spiders that had already tasted the girl's wrath. Hemlocke closed her journal smartly, waving her hand across her front to draw an arcing path of light in the air, which lingered for a moment before suddenly racing forward, aimed at the weaker of the two spiders. You know, for as much as Hemlocke had been worried about fights that dragged out a little bit, this had been going rather well, actually. Even with just two stones, she was capable of holding her own. She would still like to have more, but it wasn't a pressing, urgent matter. It was just a mage doing as a mage does: pursuing knowledge and power.

Hemlocke's attack landed crossways across the injured monster, splintering it into hundreds of crimson shards. "And then there was one."She decided to just end this. Raising her hand and pointing it at the creature, she conjured a small red circle in the air without needing to speak the incantation, and it spun quietly until it launched forward, hopefully eradicating the spider and allowing the young mage to continue with her travels. She was going to enjoy this. And of course, she'd be able to craft her new lucent stones, to fill the remaining two slots in her talisman. New magicks would make her infinitely more versatile, and she'd be able to take on bigger challenges.

While the Bear was fighting against then harder now, the resolve shown by Anna-Mia and Glimmer overwhelmed the Bear's pushback. Anna-Mia waited for Glimmer to knock aside the bear's attack before she threw her bait. The bait itself rocketed into the bear at high speeds. She was surprised such a thing didn't injure the creatures she did this to, but she supposed that being in this world changed a lot about how things worked. She didn't know if she would ever be accostumed to that, but she would have to make her piece with it. Glimmer was steadfast in front of her master, glaring at the bear hard enough that you would think that a hole would start drilling through its body. The last spider bit the dust, blown apart by Hemlocke's spell. It seemed that little red was still pretty good at its job, despite being literally the starter kit that came with her talisman. She didn't know if that said more about her or the enemies that she was fighting, honestly. She'd probably feel better about it all if she was fighting anything that wasn't the weakest monster in the game. Oh, well. Gonna have to up the ante soon. Wonder how chickadee is doing? Wonder if she's gotten hold of any other unbelievable pets. Hemlocke placed her hand on her talisman and began absorbing the energy that was left in the area.

Anna-Mia planted her feet, knowing she could trust in her companion for this shot. She watched as Glimmer grew her light antlers once again and completely knocked the bear off kilter, even knocking the Bear INTO the bait harder than it would have hit. When the bear hit the ground, it crumbled into a pile of glittering blue shards of light Anna-Mia celebrated as Glimmer jumped into her arms. She gave the gilded rabbit a thorough petting and tossed her bunny up into the air as she giggled happily. Glimmer also seemed happy, but was still staring intently at the remains of the bear. She was a living example of how this could go wrong, so she was not going to let her guard down.

Alyxandeyr had been taking a look at the loot from the Septuple Augmented Golden Boar, and discovered the chromatic enhancements for his sword and shield, and had outfitted Gloomfang and the Aegis of the Usurper with Exsanguination and Storm Caller. Both of them seemed to be rather unbelievably powerful, and would function as Get Out of Jail Free cards or help him capitalize on any extra momentum that he might get going for him. He felt like testing his new toys out and, as was his style, he felt like murdering his favorite monsters. A lone gloomweave paced through his domain, and Alyx raised his sword as it turned its eyes toward him, and he brought the blade down to get a good baseline for his abilities before powering up.

The spider actually sprang immediately at the Gloomking, but it was sliced in two by the time it met his expertly placed shield. The corpse of the creature shattered as it slid from the Aegis and crashed against the ground. A notification that demanded immediate attention popped up. Alyxandeyr's attention was rapt. He completely forgot about where he was and what he was doing as he opened and read it.

Alyxandeyr had hit a new proficiency level, and had received a new quest as such. The last time this had happened, the Gloomking had received a powerful new ability from a strange NPC who served an unknown master, come to test Alyx' strength on behalf of said master. This new quest made him wonder if perhaps he might see that warrior again. It had not sat well with Alyx how he had used his venomous blade to overpower the woman's formidable skill. It was no measure of talent on the part of the winner if they had to cheat to win. He had taken what was meant to be a test of his ability and made it into something that he felt dirty for, rather than proud of. So he had promised himself that if he saw that warrior again that he would make it right -- or try to, at least. As it happened, the new quest was given in response to his block skill rising, and Alyx clearly recalled that that woman had used a shield in their last fight. He allowed himself the faint hope that she would be the one to test him this time as well, if indeed he were to be tested by combat.
Considering his past wrongs and his current situation, Alyx was mindful of his options as he stepped into an open area, opening his challenge list and hovering his fingers over the button... What would he say? No matter. He hit the button and waited.
It wasn't long before a stranger stepped out of the trees nearby and a familiar face and blade faced the Gloomking.
He'd gotten lucky, and it turned out that the same woman was his challenger this time as last time. At last, she could have her justice. The stranger pointed her blade at Alyxandeyr, and challenged him to a duel.
Alyx ignored the request and tried to start a conversation with the woman.
"Hello there. I'm glad I got the chance to see you again. I wanted to apologize for my behavior the last time we met."

((roleplay post 2, challenge for Alyx' level 50 block skill test.))
The woman remained stoic, pointing the tip of her sword toward her opponent. She had a mission. Arrive, defeat her opponent, and, in the event that the opponent defeated her, provide them the scroll from her master. She wasn't here to pay them conversation. Why would she bother doing that? Could she do that? Alyx didn't know if this NPC was even programmed with the ability to speak. But he had to try. The Turing rating on NPCs in this world was high enough to reasonably pass as human during their interactions, if a little scripted and stilted occasionally. He couldn't think of a reason why the one of the first NPCs that the player would meet would be an unspeaking robot of a thing.
What would there be to gain from that? It almost hurts immersion to have that standard of a trope exist in this world. The Gloomking was a compelling artificial intelligence, and was one of Alyx' favorite characters he'd met.
"Please, I would like to speak with you before we begin."
"No. Fight." Her words were clear and determined. She was not having any of this stalling.
