"Good, well, we have an extensive file on known selkies and I may even be able to assist in reading and writing. I don't have muscles, but the idea is the same." He offered a little smile.
"Oh? Yes. If you would like me to, I can visit tonight." He had already planned to keep an eye on her. Visiting would make it easier.

"I'd like you to teach me," Maia said. It was nice to hear that she might be working with someone familiar. She'd been dreading working with people she didn't know; she'd attached to Toby and Dari due to circumstances. She'd been frightened, she'd had to trust them.
"Okay. You have to, don't forget." She'd remind him later anyway.

"I can probably arrange that." Or, more likely, Toby would be able to arrange that. He had been working for the organization a long time, but not nearly so long as his partner. Toby had been the one to even set himself up with a partner. Most agents did not have a defined second half.
"I'm four units down from you on the right, if you need me."
Toby had returned later with an update and there were in fact discussions of schooling and creating a schedule. He also had to run off again to make the schedule official and could only return for a quick goodbye before heading home. Dari was generally his roommate, but tonight he was staying in his on-base apartment just in case Maia should experience some crisis.

When Maia got to her apartment, she did begin to organize. She'd started picking up the clothes she had thrown onto the floor. She sat on her bed to fold them, sighing. This place would never be home. The hotel she had stayed in with the agents had been more like home than this. She doubted she'd feel comfortable wherever they relocated her. And though she was sure Toby would probably make an effort to come see her, with how he'd had to run after saying goodnight, she doubted it would happen. At least, not often.
She dropped the sundress she'd been folding and flopped herself on the bed. She missed the old creaky bed she'd had in Oregon. She missed her seals. She turned over to bury her face into her pillow.

Tonight, Dari didn't have any assignments or work to do. He was simply expected to exist. When he had finally bid goodnight to Maia he felt that she was still nervous and upset. He decided that periodically he would wander past and see if she seemed to be pacing or uncomfortable, and she knew where he was currently staying. He was completing a level in one of his games and then was going to make his way down the hall to check on Maia.

It hadn't been long before tears had started to roll down the selkie's cheeks and onto the pillow. She had tried convincing herself this was the better situation: if she'd stayed on her beach, she could have been killed by now. Her pelt could have been taken. She might have been slaving away for some man, cleaning house or worse. She knew this had been the only solution.
Knowing it didn't make it any easier. She sniffed, turning to the side and rubbing at an eye with her fist.

When he reached her apartment, Dari put a hand against the wall. His 'ears' were only decorative. He didn't hear in the way the average person did and many of his senses were only barely equivalents, not exact duplicates. He went to the door and knocked lightly. It sounded like she was awake, and it didn't sound like she was happy.

Maia sat up, wiping at her eyes to attempt to dry them. The noise had startled her, but maybe someone was knocking to be let inside. She doubted selkie eating monsters would knock. "Come in," she managed. she knew it was Dari, he'd promised to visit. As long as it'd actually been knocking and not some creeper.
How was she supposed to face Dari now, though? She didn't want him to catch her crying.

Dari let himself in and closed the door gently behind him. He went looking for Maia and found the lump in her bed.
"Maia?" She had asked him to come, and at the moment he was glad he had,

So it had been Dari at the door. Maia pulled the blankets off of her, throwing the pillow to the floor. She didn't say anything at first, instead climbing out of bed and wrapping her arms around him. "I don't want to stay here," she muttered into his shoulder. "I don't want schooling or anything. I just want..." She sniffled.
To go home. To be in that hotel with Dari and Toby again. To be anywhere but here.

Dari wrapped his arms around the selkie and cooed to her.
"Shhhh..." Of course she didn't like it here. It was new and frightening and different. Her whole life was changing, and who was going to take that with enough grace to not get upset? For now he just wanted to help calm her.

Dari's presence was a comfort; Maia stopped to look at him, seeming almost embarrassed. Her eyes were still wet, and her lips gave a dangerous wobble. "I'm sorry," she said. "I tried to be happy moving here. I know I can't go back." And maybe that was what made it worse. However much She wanted to return home, she knew she couldn't.
"You came though. Like you promised. You'll stay?"

Dari looked down to her as well, giving no sign that he was ashamed or judging her for her reaction. How could he? Leaving home was hard.
"Sure. I can stay if that'll help." He hadn't been expecting to stay the night, but he could easily go retrieve his computer to amuse himself in Maia's unit while she (hopefully) slept. "What else can I do for you?"

Maia gave Dari another hug, this time out of gratitude. He was willing to stay with her and that was something special. "I wish we could go somewhere," she said. Somewhere not here. "Maybe after schooling you can show me the lake you were telling me about?" she asked. She let go of him, straightening the blanket on her bed.
"Come on," She invited, patting it. They could sit and talk.

At the moment everything would likely be closed. It was late, and they were in the middle of the desert. There were the amenities on-base but he knew that wasn't what Maia was talking about.
"You can plan a trip with Toby. It's about an hour out and an hour back, though. You may need a whole day." He was invited to join her than and sat down beside her.
