Madison did not want to go outside... but she didn't want to stay in here, either. Why were all the choices totally crappy? If this was what fighting the monsters was going to be like... thoroughly outclassed and hurting all the time...

But they'd been chosen. There was a value in being chosen. It meant you were good for something. Though Madison knew from her own experience that sometimes, what you were good at was 'being a toy for other people'.

Still. Denial wasn't going to get her anything but dead. Again. She took a deep breath and tucked her bandages in her empty pocket before running both hands through her hair, wincing as her now thoroughly cracked and battered formerly-manicured nails caught in the tangles. Still, getting it pulled back and in some semblance of order helped a little... as did snapping off the most damaged acrylic nails. Ugh.

"Do you need help?" she asked Cass - even though the other girl was by the door and apparently ready, she still looked like she could use a little assistance. "I still have a couple bandages, and stuff..."

Cass looked to Madison when she spoke to her, smiling a bit. "I..." she paused, looking down at herself. Wow. She actually kind of looked a bit like hell, didn't she? She laughed and scratched the side of her head, fumbling with her hair. The feeling of wanting a shower came back.

She'd been in a pod for at least a week and now she was getting coated in acid and other grime. She was going to have battlescars by the time she died, that much was sure to her.

"I think I could use a bit of a topper to hold me together, yeah." she confirmed after a moment. "Thank you for asking..." she paused, realizing she didn't know the other girl's name. "Uhh. I'm Cass. Thanks for the help....uhh...canIhaveyournameagain? You probably mentioned it earlier but names are just... I can't remember all of the names I hear on the fly."

"Go," said Gale vehemently, in answer to Bix's statement of having a choice. "We can't stay here; staying here is like waiting for death. Yeah, going outside might be death too, but at least fighting is easier when you're not stuck in a room being attacked by a creepy vine creature with nowhere to run to."

A noise to his left made Gale turn his head; Ennéa was standing beside him, and he blinked at her, slightly bemused. "Oh," he said, when she spoke, glancing down at his blackened leg and ankle, glimpses of it visible under the ripped jeans. "Yeah, I got a little bit scratched. No big deal..."

Stop trying to be a hero. Ariane's words came unbidden into his mind, and Gale suppressed the urge to scowl, instead shaking his head, trying to get rid of the nagging thought. He was rather lost in his own head, so when Ennéa knelt, he did not really notice. What he did notice, however, was when she began wrapping the bandages around his ankle. - mostly because it hurt.

"OW!"

Gale abruptly clamped his mouth shut. Once she was finished he gave the girl a small, slightly hesitant smile. "...thanks," he said, and nodded, the smile much wider now. "I appreciate it."

It hurt less now, since she was done, and Gale tested it out, cautiously stepping away from the wall. Ow, ow, ow...!

Well, it wasn't perfect, but it would certainly do much better. "I have bandages too," he said. "Y'know. In case anyone needs them."

Madison nodded to Cass and scooted a bit closer to the girl, trying to be careful as she started tending to her injuries. "I'm Madison," she said, quietly. "Um, A-Two, in the... the field, or whatever that was. I'm not, like, entirely sure still. It all happened so fast."

Marcus grunted in pain at Cassandra wrapped him in bandages. "Thank you, I- I appreciate it." He smiled, honestly not having expected that much kindness. Or what he thought of as kindness. Sure he'd been making light just moments ago when death seemed to loom, but in the short calm..they were looking out for each other. He was used to looking out for himself. But, as his gaze wandered around, Marcus did feel a sort of connection to the merry little band that had formed through this.

They were in it together as the saying went, and as much as he wished things were not as bad as they were...They hadn't lost anyone yet. But that idea brought Marcus back to sobering reality. They had been injured. They very well could die. He looked back as Cassandra, and pulled out his bandages. She'd come to his side, and-
She threw off his normal self. He liked being serious and controlled. But she was a wild card. Her added into his emotional mix and everything got skewed. She- ******** it. Getting up, he went back to her, catching the tail end of the conversation. Madison huh? He'd try to commit the name to memory, provided...

Shaking he head of such thoughts he held up one of the other exposed injuries on Cass and bandaged it. His face slightly pink. "Uh, Madison was it?" He smiled. "I'm Marcus lest...uh, work together to make sure this loose cannon doesn't fire off shall we?" His smile was a divide between joking and lighthearted sincerity. Giving Cass a wink, he stood. "You have to admit, a little backup never hurt."

Cass was turning into a mummy! She wobbled uncertainly as not just one person, but two started to patch her up, looking between them with a mix of confusion and something that resembled being completely blind-sided. She almost reached out to lean against the wall of the shack for support, but seemed to get some variety of paranoid thought. Instead, she grabbed onto Marcus's shoulder to keep herself upright.

"Well it's nice to meet you Madison. I don't think we ran into each other during trials, so we shouldn't have any bad blood between us." She laughed a bit, still keeping up her good humor. "I was Gamma 12." Cass scratched her chin and left off a note of Queen of Destroying-my-own-head in her continued introduction.

She then gave Marcus a look, pouting. "Hey, now. Being a bit of a loose cannon never hu-..." Never hurt anybody. She looked at the three spots of bandages she'd accrued, making a face, before laughing. "Okay, maybe it hurts me a lot. But I don't regret it."

Cass took a deep breath.

"Okay. I have a gun, another set of bandages, and am probably more ready to throw myself out the door than I should be." Another deep breath. "Think we need to make any more prep before we get out of here?"

Gale and Cass were right. They did need to go.

Bix pulled the remaining shreds of his shirt off and threw them to the floor. Holding his side he moved to the door with all the rest of the badly injured, wobbling trainees.

"Cass. Madison. Marcus. Ennea.." He was only muttering but he was definitely trying to remember and file away everyone's names. He had a hard time with the weird island names so unless they were a Beta (which Marcus had been.. HUZZAH..) saying that you were Gamma this or Eta that meant nothing to the crimson-eyed hunter.

"Let's get out of here.." His gun clenching hand started to poke the door with the barrel of the pistol. "I'm not sure if we could be more ready unless someone has a cushy hotel hidden in their backpack with maid service, showers and a good night's sleep.."

"I wish," Jordan said to Bix, and shrugged his pack onto his shoulders again. Nothing left in it but the manual, but who knew when something was going to be useful one way or another? He gripped the bat tighter. "No more use we can get out of this place. I'm ready. Are we headed for the drop point, or does anyone have a better idea?"

Cass looked to Jordan when he made his inquiry, her lips tightening a bit; but not in disapproval by any means. She nodded slowly. "I think that might be the best course of action we have at this point. If we scatter to anywhere else who knows what is there?"

It was a sad and miserable reality, to say the least.

"Plus everybody should know how to get there without us constantly having to check on each other to make sure we all know where we're going."

Cass frowned.

It was like when you had to do those missions in a computer game that required back tracking all over the place. Annoying.

As the thing collapsed in the ground, withering and curling up, the wall behind them continued to quaver. Slowly and surely, several somethings began curling out from the first cracks on the wall, what seemed like tendrils of black mist curdling together, forming into thick, bulbous clusters, bubbling outwards. The first one popped, from it trickled black spindly ink - millions of tiny spiders - crawling against the wall, into the ground, slowly covering the walls with black.

The loud BANG that happened next caught all the trainees by surprise. Someone was looming where the door once stood.

Caelius simply circled around the trainees, giving the partially huddled group a blatant stare, one eyebrow raised. He stopped, in fact, right against the wall where there should have been thousands of spiders crawling against the walls. The floorboards underneath him were perfectly in tact, even the rafters above had a fine layer of cobwebs that lay unshaken.

Finally, the Hunter opened his mouth. "Are you going to huddle in there forever or actually come with me?" There was no room for negotiation as he simply stroke out, weaponless, through the open door and waited, crossing his arms. Other than a haphazard collection of bags and supplies littering the outside courtyard, there were no other signs of a scuffle: no bodies, no strange limbs, no ripped clothing, and the bandages discarded on the ground were covered in only dirt footprints. Any students who dared to look back at their wounds would find themselves unharmed, even the pain had faded to only something that could be explained as psychological.

"Now lets pick up our text books, and turn to page three-hundred and seven, chapter XIII, regarding: Fear." As he spoke, the houses around them began to fade, blurring into a strange white fog. "Fear, as classified by human kind as an anomaly, something of neither science nor magic." He continued to read out loud. "Its existence is is the residual byproduct of the unknown, of humanity's failure to accept themselves. It preys on us and makes us weaker." There was a particularly strange diagram, covering half the page, looking something like a pentagram with symbols etched in each corner. "Fear can be divided into five categories, each one representing a different branch of it. All of them represent the unknown, and if knowledge and creation were considered good, then Fear would be the distinctly chaotic evil."

Caelius briefly closed his book for a second, and took off his glasses, clearing them from the growing fog condensation. "Lets continue walking then, pick up what you can trainees, I'll talk as we go. This weather here is unfriendly at best." The shuffle of his boots as he walked was muffled at best, it was unclear as to where exactly they were going. "In addition to the five branches, and just as how Fear is a residual remain of the unknown, Insanity the residual remains of Fear. When incomplete Fear particles are scattered, with an inability to form together, they become instead, bits and pieces of something else, also known as Insanity, named so for its ability to slowly drive any and all beings into guilt and insecurity. However, Insanity is intangible, it harms only the mind and not the actual physical being."

The Hunter deliberately paused and gave an unreadable expression to all the trainees trailing along. They were walking at an upwards angle now, the ground below them rugged but oddly even. "While Fear acts as an essence, breathing an animated reality into creatures, beings, and even the emotion and feeling of fear, Insanity instead attempts to dig under the victim's mind by breathing life into their their doubts and insecurity. Wherever Insanity is created, it leaves a white fog-like residue that immediately attacks like a virus any victims who breathe in the substance, working like a hallucinogen acting as fragments greatest suspicions and doubts." Caelius paused for just a brief second and tucked his own textbook away. "I would like you students to read the rest of this content when you get back to your dorm rooms."

Something shook in front of the group, the sound of wood straining against metal, and then a resounding echoing clank. A single wooden drawbridge extended from the foggy abyss. As trainees followed Caelius across, as the fog cleared, what they saw on the other side was a rather strange sight.

An even green lawn spanning an impressive distance covered the entire area: indeed it could have been said that what lay on the other side might have formerly been a castle, walls spanning an impressive height. A few buildings remained inside, clearly used, proud, some of them populating a few people walking back in forth in formal white-trim coats, not unlike what Caelius himself was wearing. The single tallest building in the background remained unmistakable, and also the one lying slightly perpendicular next to it: the Deus Ex Machina training quarters and dorm rooms. The trainees had never left the island in the first place.

The Hunter "instructor" gave a mock bow. "Welcome to Deus Ex Machina, we Hunters who protect humanity against what they Fear. Your training evaluation will be posted the next day. I recommend you get a good night's rest, you have been cleared for your weapons initiation ceremony, though it is recommended you read your textbook for information regarding this. The index is at the back of the book."

He didn't wait for any questions and simply strode off, textbook still tucked under his arm.
