Ethfael Ethfael listened mutely to Anues' words, not offering comment throughout the entirety of his friend's speech. He didn't waver from his silent resolve, but his lips twitched slightly into a weary smile that bordered on being satirical. "Indeed I've tried," he said after a moment, the expression fading from his features as they receded to a more neutral position once more, "I can't count the number of times I've tried Anues, but she won't listen." The Dragonair looked up toward the sky for a moment, expression pensive, before he looked down toward his Gardevoir companion again. "The trouble with Era isn't her flying, nor is it recklessness, or even the fact that she's so often and easily hurt," Ethfael sighed slightly before concluding, "The trouble is how much she cares." It was an odd phrase that the Dragonair spoke, but a true one nonetheless.
Ethfael's worn expression lightened slightly as he continued on the thought. "I've tried to tell her in so many ways just how much it hurts to see her hurting, and she does understand, to some extent at least. Yet she constantly gets herself into these situations again and again because she can't seem to keep herself from it. I hear the words too often: 'But Ethfael, they needed help.' She tries so hard to protect others that she doesn't consider herself. It's admirable but she doesn't realize just how much it pains others when she gets herself hurt." Ethfael bowed his head slightly, a frown coming over his features again. Often he asked himself what he would do without Era and just as often he answered himself that he couldn't do without her. That was why he took it upon himself to look after her; because she didn't seem to be able to do it herself. "I've tried Anues," he concluded wearily, "But how can I take away from her the very thing that makes her who she is?"

AnuesThe Gardevoir listened in silence as he stared down at the ground as his left hand idly rubbed his right arm. His ears merely twitched occasionally to show he was still listening at all, but he really had nothing to say despite all the questions arising in his mind. You tried? Repeatedly? Well then why was it still happening? She’s a Pikachu; she’s 15 feet smaller than you. Stop her if you care about her so much. Why were these situations so common? Hell, Irilyss gave him the same BS, in a sense. What made it seem so necessary to act as such? You’re going to get yourself killed—for what? …For caring? By his conclusion, Anues’ head snapped up to view the Dragonair in means to say something—his words irking the Psychic but he instead remained silent as Ethfael continued, and his own posture slouched slightly as he gave into listening again. Something about the Dagonair’s voice held a subtle control over Anues’ actions, keeping him silent, or simply shutting him up. Help. What kind of help was she giving dive bombing into her own downfall? Had she done anything at all? The Gardevoir’s eyes shut slightly, indicating some phase of thought he’d entered, just trying to find some sort of sense in it. What sort of help will you be doing when you’re dead? Admirable, he calls it. Anues looked back up at Ethfael, his eyes narrowing slightly as if a nerve had been struck though it wasn’t quite anger, it was a level of confusion. “How is it…?” His own voice faded out despite the silence Ethfael himself answered, which he assumed was his cue to reply. He continued to stare at him though with that confused expression, stuck on his own thoughts and it lit up in a mild blankness with a simple twitch of his ears as Ethfael began to speak again. He didn’t say much at all. Now he was finished, and now Anues merely shook his head lightly. He’d normally turn to laughing or poking fun at the other person now, but he was left dumbstruck. Was it because Ethfael said this? No, no not at all. It was that question. Arguably, that question would stump anybody but it was different. He felt the urge to think about it, consider it. Responses that he would come up with naturally didn’t come. Anues continued to blankly stare at the Dragonair, though his expression didn’t lie like it so casually did. He was actually stuck. Aire involuntarily invaded his thoughts, finally making him give a sudden, rapid blink after some time, giving some sort of response that he was still down to Earth. Answers were cued, but not the ones he was looking for exactly. Was he of all people honestly troubled by this? Anues frowned and his expression softened. Despite still staring at Ethfael, none of it was directed at him, or anything outside his own thoughts. “I… don’t know.” The response carried off on a breath and he said nothing more. He did this all the time, didn’t he? Why did it seem so meaningless then? If something bad happened to Aire, he wouldn’t know what to do with himself. Hell, he connected their lives off of impulse. The thought of anything bad happening to her—he couldn’t even give himself a moment to think about it, the Gardevoir merely shook his head and turned his attention away in an almost panicked manner. It didn’t matter, if Aire died, he would too. He found comfort in that, didn’t he?
Anues hugged his opposing arms what little he could in a sense of insecurity; his mind trailing through series upon series of events and hypothetical situations that had or could happen and how he’d respond. He was no different from that Pikachu, was he? Aire needed him and he’d do anything to keep her safe. His own safety was disregarded entirely—Anues was no different than a defense mechanism. His attention then reeled back to Ethfael, though he seemed more troubled than upset as he finally raised a hand to his face and closed his eyes, regaining himself to some degree. At least, he attempted to. If it were temporary, it would do. “Stop her. Stop her so she doesn’t get herself killed.” Just as Aire did to him over and over again. Did it really stop him though? Era wouldn’t stop. No, her stopping didn’t make sense. They had two different priorities, but both existed nevertheless, have it be one person or hundreds. “Era can help. Era can help all she wants. She just can’t be flying into things head on and setting herself up for death.” The Gardevoir’s attention turned away and his eyes attention returned to the ground, simply staring down between his fingers. He was so contradicting.

Ethfael Ethfael watched his friend's reaction to his words, mutely noting the change that came over the Gardevoir's face. It was subtle but more revealing than the expressions that normally settled upon Anues' features. He looked more puzzled than the Dragonair had seen him look before, bordering on baffled by the standards of how he was normally. His words were just as soft and hesitant as his own distant expression became when he seemed to be thinking of something far beyond Ethfael's own comprehension. It wasn't a fleeting thing either, it was something that remained for quite some time; long enough to cause Ethfael a good degree of discomfit as he sat there awaiting a response other than the 'I don't know' that he'd been given. Clearly there was something more that the Gardevoir was thinking about, regardless of whether he planned on saying anything about it, and the dragon was intrigued but wasn't one to pry. Eventually Anues was bound to say something, yes? But as the seconds ticked by and the silence elongated into something more and more oppressive to the uncertain Dragonair, he wondered if perhaps he should say something to the seemingly shell-shocked Gardevoir.
Then, almost as suddenly as his companion's thoughts had drawn him away, the Gardevoir suddenly snapped his focus back to Ethfael, causing the Dragonair to blink in slight surprise at the intensity in his normally mild gaze. It wasn't that the intensity was directed at him, it was clearly directed toward something else, but all the same it was disconcerting. When at last Anues spoke up Ethfael listened, watching as the Gardevoir seemed to revert to something almost normal for just a moment before something shifted yet again and he seemed to contradict himself before falling silent again. Ethfael pondered the Gardevoir's musings and his vascillating perspective for a moment, gazing pensively toward the water just as Anues was at the ground. After a moment Ethfael raised his gaze again, "I don't intend on allowing her to do so," he said quietly but gravely, "That's the reason I'm there, to look after her and ensure that she doesn't get herself into more trouble than she can handle." He smiled slightly, "I've never really been one who believes in fate but sometimes I wonder. When one person completes another without even trying how can you believe anything but that they were meant to meet one another? If I look after her and she looks after me then it will be alright." He chuckled slightly, "At least, that's what she'd say."

AnuesAnues was ignorant of Ethfael's responses to his own actions, instead simply looking back up at him as he began to speak again. He was partially clueless and his thoughts remained scattered but the dragon’s words were clear despite his disability to focus properly. “Then why does it still happen? What happens next time?” He cut into Ethfael’s response as he paused before going silent again, and his eyes turned elsewhere for no longer than an a second, indicating some form of unknown thought before meeting Ethfael’s gaze again; his own blank look tinting with curiosity. “Could it be called fate, or simply timing? Anyone could meet another and wonder the same thing.” But, what if they hadn’t? Anues blinked. Maybe one of them would have died without the other, maybe one would be lonely, maybe they’d go on fine and the meeting could have meant nothing at all. He shook his head. It was timing, simple as that. Fate was such a disgusting word… though, where would he be if he weren’t here? Dead, probably. And what of Aire? She’d be alone. How she hated that; it became so clear. Too clear. “Well Ethfael, it’s good to know you trust each other that much.” was the Gardevoir’s end response in nothing more than a sigh, saving his own thoughts for another time. That wasn’t the subject now though that response alone bombarded his mind with so much more. “But what if something did happen to one of you? If something happened to Era, what would you do?” And, if he had considered that before, then why was Era still flying into things? The Gardevoir hugged his knees to his chest idly, still staring at the Dragonair as if demanding some sort of answer.

Ethfael Ethfael exhaled slowly in response to the barrage of questions from Anues; something was clearly on the Gardevoir's mind, it wasn't like him to be as questioning as he was now. With a sigh, he looked back at Anues and his thoughts aligned themselves into an answer. "It still happens because it can't be helped. If I knew how to stop it would I be here now, regretting what I haven't been there to do? When I'm there I do what I can but I'm not always there, and therein the problem lies," he sighed again, closing his eyes as if it pained him to think about, "I don't have all the answers, none of us do. If I knew what would happen next time then I wouldn't have this problem. I just...want her to understand what she's risking when she does things like that and I know that it's useless to try. If I can't change it, then the least I can do is look out for her when she needs it." It was Ethfael's own quiet way of showing that he cared.
"As to fate..." he continued, expression slightly bemused when he opened his eyes again, "I don't pretend to think one way or the other about it. You may call it what you like but the point is that there's something there. It's an odd concept to consider, to be sure, but it's not something that I would choose to take lightly. There are things that happen in this world Anues... Things that are so strange and bizarre and coincidental that one has to wonder if they are coincidence at all. Think about it: what are the odds that timing would work out so perfectly in some cases that have happened in the past? I find it hard to believe that timing is so gracious."
The last question was by far the most difficult to answer, bringing the Dragonair pause even after he thought he knew what he wanted to say. He had so many thoughts running through his mind that he couldn't speak for a short while, trying to clear his head. "If something happened to Era..." he said his voice soft and low as though contemplating his words and their gravity as he said them, "If something happened to her I couldn't forgive myself. It's something that I told myself long ago, a promise that I made that I would watch over her. To let her be severely hurt or...killed... That would be to fail, not only myself, but her as well." He fell silent for a moment, looking down to the water for a moment before returning his gaze to the Gardevoir. "I wouldn't want to be in a world without her there," he said solemnly, "It wasn't always like that but now I can't imagine how I lived without her. In an odd way...she completes me."

AnuesAnues was silent, though he smiled slightly as the Dragonair's words progressed. He personally had nothing else to say. They'd end up going in circles. Was he right though? Who knows. He'd been in such positions more than once, but could anything really be thought of it? Someone just so happened to be there when you needed it. One of many, many people. He couldn't help but smile at the memory of it anyway. He never gave Aire enough credit. He wouldn't leave her though. Maybe once she actually registered that, he'd feel less a need to hold her hand through everything. ... Not that he minded. Anues gave a seemingly startled blink and his attention refocused on Ethfael as he continued. His eyes drifted elsewhere, if only for a moment before meeting Ethfael's again and gave a silent sigh. "You'd be surprised to find out just how mutual it is." was his end all statement as he stood and promptly lifted into a hover. "Well, shall we visit the team? I'd like to see how Phione is." He had nothing to hide, he enjoyed the Water type's company. Overall, this was too much of a mind game he created on himself. It was time to stop.

Ethfael Ethfael looked up in slight surprise at Anues' final response to his long speech. He hadn't intended to say so much but when he'd gotten started the words just had kept coming. It was...strange to say the least, certainly abnormal. Normally he was at a loss of anything to say but just now it had seemed as though he could have kept talking for far longer than he had already. He decided to leave the matter lie, choosing instead to ponder what the Gardevoir had said. It insinuated more than perhaps the Psychic had intended, but for some reason Ethfael didn't get that impression. It seemed, contrary to that, that Anues meant exactly what he had implied. The Dragonair almost wanted to ask just what his companion had meant but thought the better of it just in time for the Psychic to change the subject.
Ethfael smiled a bit in apology, clearly he'd worn his subject out ever so slightly, enough for Anues to change it. "Certainly, if you'd like," he said amiably, smoothly transitioning from the thought process he was wrapped up in to the less stressful one offered by the Gardevoir. It was, perhaps, a bit much for the both of them. "I'm sure he'd be delighted to see you as well." Considering that he was with a Psychic it was likely that Anues would Teleport them both, but reagardless he was amiable to anything; the Dragonair at least wasn't in any rush.
