Wow I have to admit this is so enlightening for me. Please don't take that as sarcastic as I'm very old school 'goth'. They didn't even have a name for us back then , well besides losers and freaks .... oh yeah and or sick and morbid.
I have a daughter who is 'goth' now as well. I no longer wear only black, or black with dark crimson (blood red) or silver trimming ..... never gold, that just never worked for me. She however is wearing the all black now. I still listen to my oldies like Alice Cooper and some newer stuff that i'm not even sure what it falls under these days like Manson, NIN, and Rob Zombie along with classical....go figure, heh ... but until you listen to death of a swan (swan song) on a dark stormy night by only candle lit rooms with the insense going you can really appreciate classical I guess.
I have always been deathly pale and don't go out in the daylight much so that doesn't help but I have that darned irish white skin and hate to burn which happens to easily for me. I also was raised on saturday monster movie matinee and old b horror films and remember going to see the first nightmare on elm street and those now classic 80s horror films right when they were released. I've had people move away from me in theaters watching horror movies because I'd laugh instead of scream while trying to figure out how they did the effect. I even got to meet Tom Savini once and got to help him show how they did gun shot packs at my college.
Anyhow, I think its a bit harder to deal with the 'anti-social' lable when you are younger, when you get old like me you don't care what anyone thinks, you are just who you are and they can like it or leave it... or scurry away. twisted

If you were around when it all started Cera you must feel pretty confused now. Even though I would not really consider Alice Cooper "goth" by my books (even though I was raised listening to him in the car ) all the old music is being forgotten about. Even bauhaus and sisters of mercy have been shoved in the closet and alot of the people that claim to follow the scene have never even heard of them. They seem to have been replaced with screaming death metal like slipknot which has nothing to do with the way things began. (Its not that I mind metal.. its just not the same thing.)
Which is a pity really. I personaly dont consider myself "gothic" but I listen to the old music (along with many other kinds) and dress in black. So I supose to an outsider it would look that way.

Then theres some who don't mind the anti-social label and are perfectly fine with their lack of freinds((I just went through this conversation this morning with my mum while she bitched I need more freinds..)). I was never really one for the oldies although I heard them alot when I was little. Of course I silently screamed with joy when I saw the name Slipknot in the above message, being the obsessive maggot I am. The oldies have lost their label of 'metal' that they had so many years ago, being too 'mellow' in most peoples books. ((Sadly, I am one of them.. "This crap isn't metal!" sweatdrop ))

Alice I dont beleive was ever classified as metal (this is as far as I know) I have only heard it classified as Shock rock and Rock. "Goth rock," on the other hand is usualy very mellow. As for metal changing over the years I still consider old metal metal. Just a different type. However I love almost all music.. (except for pop, country, rap and hiphop).. so it does not really matter what it is called to me.

I just meant what was considered metal back then((and still by some)).
