Brendan nodded, looking down at the table. "I just... want to tell her what she can do, in whatever case." Apparently the stakes were higher for her than he had thought, considering what Rory'd mentioned a minute ago. "Miss Lee seems to be taking all this well. Provided you told her," he said softly, folding his hands on the table. He honestly hoped she was doing alright after all this, but didn't imagine for a second she walked away unaffected.

"She knows what Lydia did an' she knows I wasnae willin' in it," Rory said quietly, moving around the kitchen to finish making dinner. "What hurts th' most is . . . I thought Lydia wis me friend. I trusted her."

To that, Brendan could say nothing. He was, in a way, in the same boat as Rory. He never would have imagined Lydia would do such a thing, and certainly didn't believe she wouldn't be honest to him about it. "I know it means nothing, but I apologize." For more than just Lydia. For hating him.

"It's alreet," Rory said, giving a slight shrug. "It weren't you tha' did all tha'. Besides, could be w' end up as family an' t wonnae do t' hold grudges." He set what he was working on down and looked at Brendan. "You really love her, doncha? Not your sister, I mean . . . Lee."

Brendan looked up at Rory, his eyes widening for a moment before looking back down at the table. "I'm sorry for that, too." He nodded, not knowing what else to say. "If it means anything, I wasn't planning on stealing her or anything of that nature." He only wanted what was best for her, even if that wasn't him.

Sometimes it seemed he and Rory were the only ones who thought so. He found it odd that the boy cared so little other men were in love with her, but didn't want to mention it. "She seems to have changed quite a bit, though." He still loved her, but that didn't mean he'd keep himself from convincing himself and Rory that it was fading. "She's much happier."

"It's 'cause she's free," Rory said, nodding. He turned back to what he was doing, finishing up cooking. "This place wis a prison t' her. I donnae think her parents meant it t' be, but it wis. In Farstep, she can do anythin' she wants. Free t' work, free t' love whom she will, an' free t' live her life. Freedom's a powerful thin'. I cannae think o' anyone who wouldnae be happy wi' tha'."

Brendan's eyes wandered a bit, thinking to himself. If freedom was so powerful, wouldn't that be so for imprisonment, as well? Perhaps that had something to do with what happened with Lydia... "You're telling me it has nothing to do with you?"

"Well, Lee an' me love each other a lot. She was happy before she met me, I think," Rory told him, focused on what he was doing. "Some days, I donnae honestly know why she's wi' me, but I'm glad she is. I feel more complete wi' her. I'd like t' think th' feelin' is somehow mutual."

Brendan smiled softly, despite the circumstances. "I always wondered what kind of man she'd end up marrying. I never, not in a million years, would have guessed her husband would be anything like you." That was a huge compliment, even if it didn't seem like it.

"I get tha' a lot," Rory chuckled, not at all offended. He looked back at Brendan, almost looking through him, eyes focused on some point far off. He shivered a bit and blinked then looked at Brendan. "I hae a feelin' you'll meet a woman tha'll make you faeget all about Lee one day."

Brendan rubbed at his forehead, shrugging and sighing. "Thanks for the encouragement..." He wasn't sure if that was sarcastic or not. Pushing himself out of the chair he looked to the ground, thinking before seeming to make up his mind. "I'm heading out for a bit, now that you're running the kitchen." He needed to find Lydia.

Rory nodded. He went back to finishing dinner. He looked up at Brendan for a moment. "E'erythin' will be alreet. You'll see." He gave the man a smile and went back to cooking.
