The little girl reached out and felt that feeling on her face again. She understood now that this was called 'Arin'. and she worked hard to make the sounds "A...rin." and she accepted the treat with a similar bow of her head that the woman had used earlier. She offered her other treat to the woman and saw the woman was showing her teeth again, and she felt herself do the same. That night was a very new one for the little girl, and it was still one of her fondest memories. The woman had stayed with the girl, talking into the night, though the child did not understand, the sound of the woman's voice soothed her, and it made her feel that same feeling, and so she was content to hear it and stay. When the woman left, the girl felt sad, but she looked forward to the next night, and had that expression on her face all day long.

Zyke let the recovering droid strike his jaw and lift him ever so lightly off the ground. He didn't even feel the strike as he should have. The pay off of getting beaten around as much as Zyke has, you start to be able to take more. Lowering his arms down into a primitive shield to guard against the droid follow up kick, Zyke slides backwards from the force of the push, again taking no real damage from the blow. He knew the second droid was coming since before the first had landed it's kick. The horrible thing about these combat droids is that they lack the ability to out-think a real warrior. They just charge in and overwhelm their opponent. "My own fault I suppose," thinks Zyke. "I asked for combat drones, not real opponents." Allowing the second droids fist to collide with his jaw, Zyke slides slightly to the side, ducking immediately after with the roundhouse following the original punch. The duck worked to not only dodge to kick, but also the two blasts approaching from the still at range third droid.

Spinning down from the duck, Zyke lowers into a sweep kick, taking his first drone off it's feet. He comes up from the sweep to grab the drone, mid-air, and drive it into the ground. Picking the drone back up, Zyke smashes him back down into the ground violently, repeating this process twice more before throwing him across the room towards the cowardly third droid.

The woman returned the following day, earlier than normal. There was still light in the sky and the child was thrilled. The child had not watched from the trees that day; she had rushed forward to greet the woman, and together they walked through the trees to a stream. That day, they played in the water, and during the night, the woman combed and fixed the child's hair. There was something so relaxing about it all that the child soon fell asleep, and together they stayed in the forest, sleeping under the great trees of Nexum. The next day, the woman had had to return home, and the child waited anxiously for her to return. Not only did the woman make her feel happy, but she made the child feel safe, and the girl enjoyed that very much.

The next day, the woman did not return. The child was so confused. For months, the woman had never missed a day. She was the only routine in the child's life, and she suddenly was not there. The child waited. She never left, waiting and watching the clearing where the woman had always come to her. But she didn't come. For an entire week of Nexum's endless days and nights, the child waited until finally she heard a sound in the clearing. She had made sure to comb her hair the way the woman had, but she only had her fingers, so she didn't know if it would be the same. She wanted so much to please the woman, and when she heard the word "Arin!" called in the soothing sound of her voice, the child leaped from the trees and ran to her, wrapping her arms around the woman in a gesture she did not herself understand. it was like she wanted to hold on and make sure she couldn't leave again.

Something had changed about the woman. She was... Smaller. The child did not know how to explain it, but somehow the woman --who she now realized had been steadily growing in her midsection-- was back to the size she had been when the child first saw her. She did not understand this, and it perplexed her, but she still held on as the woman had smiled and pet her hair, saying soothing things and making the child forget about the long week without her. In the woman's arms was a bundle beyond the sweetroll she gave to the girl, who took small but frenzied bites as she let the familiar flavor wash through her once more. The woman was speaking again, and she lowered the bundle for the child to see. Inside was a tiny, fleshy, person. The little girl looked astounded and was amazed that anything could be that small and still be a person. It moved and its tiny hand touched the girl's own hand, and it closed its fingers around her own. The little girl couldn't help but smile at the baby, and looked back up at the woman, who was smiling as well.

That night, the woman had another gift for the little girl: it was a new pair of clothes. It was a deep purple dress, and the woman helped the child out of her old clothes and into the new ones. She had touched the little girl on the nose with a smile and said
"Arin"
in the way she would do for quite some time. The little girl began to recognize the nickname as herself, as she had never had an idea of self before. That night, when the woman was to leave, she offered her hand to Arin, and slowly coaxed her out of the forest, toward a building with a chimney sticking out of the top. Arin felt safe with the woman, and was now used to her leading the child places. When they reached the building, there was the scent of sweetrolls in the whole place, and a big thing took up a whole wall, where the smell seemed strongest. This must be where they were made, she had thought, and that night she had fallen asleep with the woman, the baby and the scent of sweetrolls holding her tight.

The woman never asked Arin to leave, and every day, she would get a special sweetroll from the oven, just for her (though she would sometimes share with the baby, because she seemed to like them just as much) and this was where Arin stayed for some time. She remembered three big lights during that time, and she slowly learned to speak, to write and that that feeling she felt when she was with the woman was called 'happiness,' and Arin never wanted it to go away.

She looked up from her thoughts, and realized where she was. She had left her room and had somehow made her way to the kitchen. We have a kitchen? It wasn't merely the place they received their food. It was a bona fide kitchen. And against the wall, she saw what she realized she was looking for; an oven. True, it was no match for the bakery's oven, but it would do for a small batch. She set about collecting the ingredients she remembered from all those years ago to put some dough together to rise. In no time at all, she had made the sponge, and from there the dough, that she would need. It was calming. It relaxed her in a way she could not explain to repeat these simple rituals from her childhood. She left the dough to rise and went to take care of some business that was weighing heavy on her mind. She had a soft smile on her face until she spoke next; "ALICE, where is Zyke? I need to speak with him."

"Lord Zyke is in the training bay, Queen Arin."

She began walking slowly toward the bay, thinking of the best way to broach the subject.

the end result of all combined rolls will determine the quality of the product, any botches will result in the whole step being aborted (or the whole process, depending on the step), while any criticals result in twice the total result of that step. For the sake of this recipe, the steps require the following turns:

recipe 1 (making rolls) :
0/1 making the sponge (botch ruins recipe)
0/2 making the dough from the sponge, kneading the dough, allowing to rise (botch on first ruins recipe)
0/2 forming the dough, applying the filling and rolling the dough (botch on second ruins recipe)

recipe 2 (icing) :

recipe 3 (combining 1 and 2) :

Arin raised her hand to the panel to open the door and hesitated. She simply didn't have any idea how to deal with this.. She lowered her hand and walked back toward the kitchen. She refused to deal with this for now. Back in the kitchen, now, she began creating a new batch of sponge for dough. She mixed the flour, sugar, water and yeast the way she had watched for several years, these memories being one of the very few things that still survived from those days. She sighed softly as she worked, stirring and trying to forget her problems. It was no easy task, but she gradually watched her current stress spiral away in a white swirl. She could almost smile. She had slipped on an apron absentmindedly, and had removed her cloak. If anyone were to walk in on the Queen, it would probably break them. There's not very much more in the Universe more absurd than such an unstoppable ragebeast looking calm, composed, playing house in the kitchen and wearing an apron, covered in flour instead of blood and gore.

Arin did smile as it all came back in waves. She smiled and covered the sponge so that it could begin to bubble. She began to clean slightly as she waited, to contain the mess. It was several minutes before it was ready to continue. She added several ingredients in a large bowl and slowly added the flour, stirring until the flour would come away from the sides of the bowl without a fuss. She smiled as she felt the old strain on her muscles as she stirred the thickening dough, and laughed softly at the absurdity of still being worn out by something so insignificant as this. She shook her head softly and continued stirring until she was satisfied that the dough was forming correctly, the old habits coming back from years of neglect.

There was something relaxing about returning to her roots. She wasn't sure why it was happening all of a sudden. Maybe it was just a futile effort to hold on to the good memories and ignore the bad ones that followed. It was a childish reaction, but baking was a childish memory, so it seemed almost fitting in a way that Arin somewhat reverted to her childhood as she did it. She turned the dough out and began kneading it, and as she remembered, it was not easy work. It seemed that no matter how strong Arin got, she would never be able to do this as effortlessly as the woman did when she was younger. This seemed to provide her no end of amusement. Something the woman had said came back and echoed in Arin's ears even as it danced on her lips "Not every battle can be won on the fields of war, and not every skill is honed with blood." Arin couldn't help smiling. Mother is the name of God on the lips of children. She had believed her mother invincible because surely someone who can do something so difficult so easily must be the most powerful person ever.

Arin greased a bowl and placed the dough inside, covering it again to allow it to rise. It would take some time before it was ready, and this had always been her least favorite part. Waiting for the dough to rise was always a horrible trial for the girl. It felt like forever, waiting and doing nothing, but it was the only way to make the rolls come out right. Of all the things they baked, the sweetrolls were some of the most precise. If the dough was not risen correctly, they would be wrong. It requires patience, and patience is just something that Arin had never had in large supply. She sat and waited as she let her mind wander through the events of her life with the woman and the girl that she had come to know as mother and sister.

She leaned her head back against the wall and remembered the old stories mother had told them to put them to sleep; stories of princesses and of majestic queens who had everything they could ever want, and who were adored by their subjects. Magical lands where everything was wonderful and no one was persecuted for being different.. Arin supposed that the children had needed to hear those stories, and that they benefit their mother just as much as them. Her mother would always go somewhere in her mind when she told the stories. Arin imagined the places now as she recalled the stories and her mother's face filled her mind. The woman Arin called mother dreamed of these places as much as the you saiyan had. Arin may have been outcast from the saiyans, and hiding among the humans (a relatively simple task for a young saiyan) but her mother was outcast from the humans and had nowhere else to go. Even her blessings were bathed in pain. After being ridiculed and run out for no fault of her own, the woman had been raped by a contingent of soldiers, shortly before Arin had met her. That was where Arin's sister had come from, and the woman looked past the hurt and was happier than ever. Arin's presence had a much more devastating effect on the woman... Arin thumped her head back against the wall she was sitting against and dented it slightly before she took a deep breath and stood again. It had been over an hour, and the dough should be ready now.

Shaking her head slightly, the Queen set about pressing the dough out into a rectangle that was the right size and thickness.

Arin sighed and began coating one side of dough with a layer of the special blend of ingredients the bakery had become famous in certain circles for. Of course, no one would buy from them openly, but it seemed everyone had their sweetrolls, and no one would host a dinner without having a platter of pastries that her mother had handcrafted. They could not charge near what the things were worth, but they got by, living a relatively comfortable life. As Arin began to carefully roll the dough, sandwiching layer after layer of the filling, she wondered how a life that was destined to be wonderful, with a family that was so loving could all go so horribly wrong... Images of her and her young sister covered in flour, laughing as she has not done since flooded her mind and stung her eyes.

As Arin cut the dough with a knife, she blinked back tears. The memory itself was hazy, but images from it flashed into her mind clear as the kitchen in front of her. It had been her mother's birthday. She had wanted to do something special for her, and in the tradition of their first months in the forest, Arin had been working on a brand new treat to give her. She had waited to be alone when she began working on the sweets. She was almost nine years old (they reckoned her age from the day she came to live with her mother as her birthday, and gave her five years before that.) Arin slid the sliced pastries onto pans and placed them in the oven, making sure it was at an acceptable temperature, and her eyes stung, whether from the heat or the memories, she was not sure.

She was so sure she had done everything right. She was positive that it had all been right.. She remembered stoking the fire and securing it, she remembered placing the pastries in to bake, and she remembered watching the light dance across the metal phoenix decoration they had hanging on the wall as she waited, happy and excited for her mother to come home and see the new dessert. Surely they would be wonderful, and she would see her mother smile again, and be praised by them both for how far she had come, and how grown-up she was for running the bakery all by herself, even if she wasn't supposed to bake when her mother wasn't there.

Arin was so distracted as she ran over the memories of those expectant hours that she dropped the bowl she had been getting to mix the icing in. She took a shaking breath and leaned on the counter to steady herself before she picked the bowl back up and started working again. As important to the recipe as the baked-in flavoring was the icing, which was added afterward, and helped draw out the subtler spices in the rolls. Arin momentarily managed to distract herself from her memories by focusing on remembering everything that went into the icing and the proper way to mix the ingredients. If done right, she could mix the whole batch of icing in just the right time as the rolls took to cook. She took a breath and tried to steady her shaking hands as she slowly stirred the mixture until it thickened to the right consistency.

Arin was right on schedule. She went to the oven to check the rolls, and, satisfied that they were baked well and through, she pulled out the pans to cool. As she waited for the rolls to cool, her memories began to intrude once more. She wasn't sure how it happened, but she must have fallen asleep... When she woke up, she remembered screaming and roaring. It had taken a moment for the child to realize what happened, but she looked around and all she saw was light everywhere, as if it were the new year celebration in their small house. She couldn't move; she was pinned down by something... It hurt her back a lot. And then she realized what was happening... The bakery was on fire. The metal phoenix decoration was laying on her back... It was too heavy. She remembered screaming and hearing no sound. Only the roar of the flames surrounded her. She couldn't understand how this had happened, or why. It wasn't fair. It was scary. She just wanted it to all go away..

Arin looked down at the sweetrolls. She must have iced them, because they were finished... The smell of the icing and the rolls brought the memory back, for even as it burned down, the bakery smelled of heaven.

Arin remembered screaming and screaming, fighting to get out as the pain in her back grew more and more. As she thought of it now, the phoenix must have been heated by the fire. She remembered her mother appearing out of nowhere, as if untouched by the flames in her frantic rush to save her daughters. She had so easily lifted the white-hot firebird that Arin was sure she had been right; her mother really was the queen of the warriors, the strongest woman ever. She had cast the heavy thing aside, when a beam fell from the ceiling and pinned her. Arin had fought and fought, pushed, pulled, lifted, everything that she could do as her mother screamed at her to leave, to get out. But Arin couldn't leave her. Not like this. And as the building came down, she remembered crying tears that boiled off her cheeks, holding her mother tight. The whole world went suddenly dark as the crushing weight of their home came down on top of them. Arin had never felt so helpless..

As she saw the sweetrolls before her, she had a mind to throw them away, to get rid of these things that made her hurt so much. But she realized she hurt too much to be angry. She fell to the ground and buried her face in her knees as she recalled waking up, the fire having burned out. She remembered the smell of burned flesh most of anything... In her last effort to save her daughter, Arin's mother had pulled her underneath herself, and sheltered her from the flames. She had spent every ounce of energy in her body to fight them, and as Arin looked into the ashen face looking down at her with a reassuring smile, the girl had reached a timid hand out to touch her cheek. This disturbance was enough, and the ash crumbled away slowly. Arin remembered screaming, horrified, distraught, guilty. It was unfair. She had killed them. She had killed them both. She screamed until her lungs hurt. She screamed until she could no longer scream, and then she ran. She just wanted it to all go away. She just wanted it to be a dream. It had to be a dream. She had to get to the Magical Kingdom, she had to get to the Good Queen and she could make it all better. She could make everything better. Arin had never run so far, for so long in her life, and she ran until her saiyan stamina was gone, and all that drove her was fear, pain, anguish and the belief that if she ran long enough that she would reach the place her mother had spoken of on all those nights, and could make it all go away. She had wanted to run so far away that it would all be made unreal. And she ran until her entire body gave out, and she had run from the farthest edge of the human district to the farthest edge of the saiyan district, where she fell and did not awake for some time.

Arin was no fierce warrior, she was no great queen. Right now, she was a scared little girl, and she stayed, curled in the corner of the kitchen as far away from the sweetrolls, crying, as she replayed those terrible scenes over and over again in her mind. It had been so long since she let herself remember that pain.. It overwhelmed her entirely, and she sobbed without control of herself or recognition of her surroundings.
