I'm just starting by learning kana. I do one katakana per day, and it helps a lot instead of trying to memorize a bunch at once. I started with katakana because its used to write foreign words, or words I can recognize until I increase my Japanese vocabulary. I've put the first section of the katakana chart on my blog if anyone is interested (www.nakamura-no-nihongo.blogspot.com )

Let's see if this code modification fixes it. Ah, I see... this server is dumb and likes to block things. This site is one of those things.

Anyone know of good books for grammar that isn't completely in roumaji?

I got a question about the "u" in japanese. every time ive seen the word "Arigato" for example, it has a U on the end of it in japanese. And when going with this program on my computer, the Word Desu was pronounced more like "Dess"
Am i just not hearing correctly, or is the U on the end often unvoiced?

In arigatou it is, it's just usually hard to hear. As for other words, mainly onesending in su, it does tend to disappear. But in women speech you may hear the Us and Is pronounced more.

Ah, so it really just depends on the dialect? like how some people say, "Starting" and some people lose the g and say "Startin" not a good example, but the best i could come up with. My main question is this. Will I not look like an idiot if I just prounce the words as I see them? Such as in Desu, saying it literally as it looks?

It's not dialects. Men and a lot of women, if they're tomboys usually, make them disappear. Women tend to say them.

the u after a vowel can indicate a long vowel sound
as for the u in desu or -masu they're whispered so it would probably be easier for you to omit them

No! No! That book doesn't have anything in kana so that I can learn easier and it's confusing. I need it like the genki books or Kodansha's Dictionary of Japanese particles where it has furigana.
