Luca snuggled into Lori's arms. "I thought you'd like it," He kissed him. "We can read it tonight."
Maia led Toby upstairs.
Luca offered Lori the picture.

Dari noted that everyone was busy in one way or another and looked to Lori. "Do you mind f I play a game?"
"Not at all," Lori replied, and so Dari went to the television, set everything up, and started the game on a very low volume. He shouldn't be bothering anyone, right? He took a big bite out of a pink and white mushroom-shaped Korean marshmallow.
Lori looked it over. "I like it," he said, "I'm jealous." Then he paused for a moment. Wait, no he wasn't! He had a scrapbook of photos! He leaned over and kissed Luca's cheekbone. "No I'm not, nevermind. Mine's better."

Luca smiled. "We can share," he said, kissing Lori. "Want to read with me?" he asked, hopefully.

"Sure," Lori agreed, nodding. Dari wanted to play his games, so they could go off on their own and leave him be. "Which one, mine or yours?"

"The one I gave you," Luca smiled. He offered him his hand. "Its good, I used to read it as a kid." He led Lori to their bedroom.

"Okay," Lori nodded. He followed Luca up and happily settled in for a good read. He was sure he'd learn something new, and a chance to practice his Elvish was always welcome.

Vacation ended and New Years came quickly. It was already late at night. Although Seamus and his new buddy Peaches were still awake, Rosie was asleep on the couch. The fireworks didn't bother her much, and Peaches was too calm to care. Seamus of course had been told what they were in the past and liked them well enough when he could see them.
Lori was sipping a mixed drink with no intention of getting drunk and Toby had bought a bottle of champagne even if it was 'just to taste.' He'd been told Luca didn't drink, and champagne wouldn't be the thing to start with, but it was tradition. He had also bought gaudy 2016 glasses and New Years tinsel tiaras from the party section, both of which Rosie had worn for longer than Toby had expected; long enough to take a few pictures, of course. Now Toby was wearing a separate set of both. He'd shoved a tiara over Lori's head and found the poor thing straining.
"...your head is enormous," Toby commented.
"It's proportionate to his body!" Dari defended.
"Yeah. So it's enormous."
"Sure, but it's not the only thing," Lori responded with a wink and a little tongue click. He still had his arm around Luca and took a sip of his drink, then offered it over to Luca. "Do you want to try?"

Maia had sipped at a mixed drink, wrinkled her nose and made one hell of a face. BLEGH. She scooped up Muffin and sat in Toby's lap. "Don't be gross, Lori," She said.
Luca sipped it when offered, then took another sip. "This is good," He said in surprise.

"I can be gross if I want," Lori said, nose in the air, and then watched Luca sip his drink. He smiled. "Yeah?"
It was true, Toby was much better with the taste of alcohol than Lori himself. Beer was fine, but liquor ruined every flavor.
Toby wrapped his arms around Maia and then gave her his tiara. Peaches only wriggled slightly, and then gave in to his fate. Seamus, who was sitting beside Toby, turned briefly from the television to look at Peaches.

Luca smiled. "Yeah. I've never had anything like this." He sipped it again.

Maia snuggled against Toby, eyes on the television. Their first new years together. She was excited for midnight! "Seamus and Peaches are friends now," she said happily.

Toby nodded. "I imagine he's like a baby brother. Just wait until they start executing elaborate plans together."

"All I tried was beer. Bleh. It's horrible!" Luca made a face and snuggled Lori. He reached over to pet Seamus.
"They'll be great plans." Maia smiled. "Right, Peaches?"

"Yeah, it's an acquired taste," Lori said with a nod, "Nobody likes beer right off." Seamus gave a little 'prrt.' He accepted the presence of the red-furred one. For now.
Peaches did not yet know his name, but he was still smushing and squinting, as was his usual fare. He seemed to be falling asleep.
"They'll be plans to steal things off of the counter and you know it," Toby teased.

Maia looked to Dari. He was being strangely quiet. She almost frowned, but instead flashed him a smile. "Are you excited for the fireworks, Dari? It's my first time watching them from a television."
"I don't think I want to acquire it," Luca made a face. "Ooh. What do fireworks look like for you Dari?"

"Is it? You'll like it, I think," Dari said with a smile. He turned then to Luca and his head tilted somewhat. "I--" He paused. "Well. They look like colorful explosions of light and fire, right? But light and fire look different to me so... uh. The same, and also very much not the same."
