I read the first three pages.
What I don't really understand about any of this round structure is why Judges aren't actively reading and reffing the fights as they go along. Unlike HoH, the GTB has virtually no running story or anything else for the Judges to be involved in. So while we're intermittently posting in our fights for this week and a half, they're just sitting around... posting in the OOC and answering the occasional question in the Help Desk thread.
What they should be doing is splitting up the fights evenly ( or close to ) and then making sure they keep themselves updated on the progress of their respected fights. Then they can step in when they see something get out of hand, instead of being reactive... be proactive! Take some initiative. Yes, you still have to Judge at the end, which means you do more work then the players overall... but that's what it is to be Staff in a tournament!
Really, I think its a pretty basic concept to maintain a tournament presence throughout the fights. Every professional sport has refs present for games and matches.

I would agree with you KB, but that does discourage one major rule of etiquette: namely that the staff (and any players with sense) want to try and work problems out with the other roleplayer first.
No, that won't always work, because you'll have Ertai Vexics anywhere you go.
But usually, me and an opponent aren't seeing eye to eye on something, we talk it out, go "oh hey alright," and post from there (usually quicker than even attentive judges could because our focus isn't split among numerous fights but one: our own.)
To have judges constantly hawk the fights may deny the chance for this, as it is assumed if the fight just can't progress, that is when judge intervention is needed and they are usually prompt about it beyond that.
Now, in James vs Cyrus, and I know "I DON'T WANT BIAS," take this as you will. But they both failed heavily in this until it was too late. Every post they made after some point in Page 2 was "no, what you did didn't work, here's why what I did DID work" - every. Damn. post. Thus, neither saw a need to go to the judges until long after the fight needed it.
An admitted example of when the ideal model doesn't work. But having skimmed the fights over, examples of the above are rare this first round, surprisingly.

In my opinion a judge presence doesn't dissuade players from resolving their own issues. In fact, the refs would only be there to act when the players can't agree on something or they feel someone is being taken advantage of. A good example would be if you made an OOC note of (( Oh, I thought you did this, so how's that gonna work? )) and the other guy immediately explains. If it all works out properly and you're clarifying things like you're supposed to, then the judge isn't needed.
Players aren't supposed to and shouldn't be encouraged to be making judge calls on their own. Their job is to clarify points where they fail to in their posts, not make an executive decision on how things work in relation to abilities and whatnot. Thats the judges' decision.
It would also keep people from taking advantage of less popular players. I'm not saying that it IS happening, but its obviously possible for someone to just keep saying "This can't happen, that doesn't work" and having their opponent pressured to agree because they're less popular. Acro vs Fier is a great example, except that Acro is too stupid to lose.
The point is, there's no reason fights should get to page 2 and then ******** up beyond repair, when they could have been fixed on page 1.
This is why you fix your s**t before it's ruined, or do your dishes daily before they pile up and take over your entire kitchen.

Man, all this talking about responsibility on Gaia brings me back to when I ran the alt BA for like, two weeks. I had to deal with all the ignorant ******** AND try and make it interesting.
Generally my life was,
Wake up, post, tell everyone to be good. Go to work, wonder how bad people were ******** my thread up. Come home, backread 100 pages or so of OOC, dish out judgments and tell people to be good. RP a little, if I had the time. Go to bed, wonder how bad people were ******** my thread up.
