Brief text today, on umbrellas.
First note that a parasol is generally used to protect from sunlight, and umbrella is normally rain. Onward with the lecture. The exact date of the development of umbrellas and parasols is unknown, but carvings and paintings reveal to us that they date at least back to ancient Egypt. Many cultures developed their own versions of course, but the purpose was the same... otherwise we couldn't say it was a parasol or umbrella... If it had a different purpose, such starting fires, we would have to call it a fire starter... or a lighter... something like that. Oh, the word Umbrella is derived from word the latin word "umbra" meaning "to shade."
There you have it ladies and gentlemen, a brief covering (haha, covering... like an umbrella) of the history of those handy rain deflectors, the umbrella.
