Evolution of language? Promoting Literacy? Yeah right. Do the people who wrote that have any idea what they're talking about? I say throw them into the AMC or some other similar den and try to believe that chatspeak doesn't hurt the English language.

Evolution of language? Promoting Literacy? Yeah right. From a linguistics point of view, he's right. Linguistics isn't about the preservation of anything, it's about the study and understanding of the evolutoin and dynamics of language, both written and spoken. From that perspective, netspeak and what not is insanely fascinating and a very interesting look at how English can change and develop. You should also take into account that English is a language developed from tribal germanic so nobody now can really claim to be speaking "proper" English.

Save that quite a bit of your developed vocabulary is there because somebody in history got lazy and decided they didn't want to pronounce something the way it was pronounced by their father. The "evolution" of language is based almost entirely upon two things, slang and theft. Slang in that an existing word, phrase, or whatever is shortened to make it easier to say and spell, and theft because quite a bit of modern English words are adapted from others, like French and Spanish. Not really, the entire concept of the Internet is convenience. Chatspeak is different from forum/blogging, yes, in that it has a more "legitimate" reason for shorten forms due to speed, however, convenience is almost always the reasoning for the changes in a language. The internet is a development of convenience, and convenience means speed.
