Calmer However, trying to prove that purgatory exists using the Lutheran bible is very difficult (many Catholics hold that he removed Mac mostly because of the statement you quoted earlier, which denied his, "by faith," position). It's possible - Luther was rather . . . cavalier . . . when it came to disposing of bits of the canon he disliked, going by his feelings rather than any true textual criticism. Calmer It's certain that Jews and most of the early Christian congregation prayed for the dead, but that proves little since they could easily have been as, "mistaken," as others. What isn't certain, obviously, is whether those, "in the know," such as Paul, also did so - (counter-)evidence of such an example would swing the argument one way or another quite heftily. Hence some of the focus upon this verse. I think Hebrews, given it's focus on the Jewish aspect of Christianity, and Christianity's belief that it is simply the natural evolution of the Jewish faith, is addressing this practice in Hebrews 9. So while some Jewish sects certainly practiced prayers for the dead, and some pre-Paulian Christians may have adhered to the same practice (see 1st Corinthians 15:29), it seems clear that the practice was frowned upon by later Christian believers.
