ReaverOfSouls
Yea, I've been following the news of Time Spiral since I've heard about it, and let me say, I am VERY impressed. I love that they're bringing back the old school mechanics I remember from my early playing days like Buyback, Threshold, Flash (new keyword, old card ability).
That and the fact there's an actual card for Mishra. And Teferi. And JAYA BALLARD! My God, I thought the Ravnica block was the end all/beat all of M:tG, but I honestly think Time Spiral is the best I've ever seen. And I started to seriously collect during Invasion/Planeshift/Apocalypse.
That's why I love the game of Magic. With each set, they've always managed to wow me completely. Well, not wow me. I quit collecting after Odyssey, skipping from Torment to Scourge. It wasn't until a couple of years ago I bout a small stack of Onslaught and Scourge that I got the urge to play again. Of course that was when the Mirrodin block was on the downswing and Kamigawa was on the upswing. Love that Kamigawa block and it's cycle of Dragon Spirits. I think the first rare I pulled from a Kamigawa pack was Kokusho, followed by Keiga, then Kodama of the South Tree.
That's the way I buy packs: In sets of three. That way, you are guaranteed at least one good, beefy, powerful rare amongst all the other goodness. At least, that is the way it worked for me. Heh. The last time I bought packs was about a month ago, again in a set of three. And I pulled a card I didn't get out of the box of Dissension I bought: Grand Arbiter Augstin IV.
yeah, Jaya is a badass, especially if you put with the rakdos guild. It's like: "what's this? this dead card in my hand that is the only thing keeping me from hellbent ican now be one of three cool things? Awesome!"
Personally, I didn't like Kamigawa as on the whole. I'm not saying that it didn't have good cards, those spirit dragons are nice, and the jitte, sensei's top and a few others are incredible. And as a block, and only within the block itself, it was powerfull, yet balanced. But as soon as you start totry and mix it with other sets, it doesn't mix well, especially the key words and mechanics.
the Arcane spells and things that relied on spirits or arcane spells to be played. In block, that was easy to pull off, and the synergy was insane, but once you tried to mix it with out of block things, you deluded the deck's rythym, synergy, speed, and over all potency exponentially. There just wasn't enough things outside the block that fit it's style or mechanics, and so instead you have people using other blocks as the base and picking only select cards from kamigawa that fit the style of the other block, and are no longer even using kami's abilities;
Epic was...well, it was something
splice was once again, awesome in block only.
soul shift only was good in deck built around it, and bearly at that.
I can't really argu with bushido, it's a solid mechanic that is not held back by being played in different blocks.
the (creature type hear) offering is a tribes mechanic, so only the ones with creature type new to kamigawa are held back by out of block play
ninjutsu was alright, only like 3 cards did anything good with it.
channel was allright
sweep sucked so much it's not even funny.
Once again, I loved the dragons though, and the muyojins were cool too. i didn't by much of the block, but the first two packs I bought got me the red muyojin (destroys lands) and a foil jugan, the rising star (the dragon witht eh nicest art work).
I just can't wait to be able to play slivers in standard again really. I'm trying to get in with a guy that buys boxes off the internet to get him to by a whole case (6 boxes) that sells for only $300 online, that's only $50 bucks a box, which is about half the price of retail or hobby shop stores. That way I can get what I want quick, and have the trade stuff everyone else wants by like the first week. Then don't buy nearly anypacks from then on.
