Basicly, the choicers say the fetus isn't a person. They says its not a person untill "such and such a date" They've also tried syain git isn't human.

The problem with this is that, yes, form the moment of conception you have a new human. Thats science. Fertalisation is the beginging of human development. And by the very definiton "Person" means a "human being" Human Being is mearly the state of being human.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Middle English, from Old French persone, from Latin persna, mask, role, person, probably from Etruscan phersu, mask.]
Usage Note: The word person has found widespread use in recent decades as a gender-neutral alternative to man in the names of occupational and social roles, such as businessperson, chairperson, spokesperson, and layperson. In addition, a variety of entirely new, more inclusive phrases have arisen to compete with or supplant -man compounds. Now we often hear first-year student instead of freshman and letter carrier instead of mailman. In other cases, a clipped form, such as chair for chairman, or a phrase, such as member of the clergy for clergyman, has found widespread use as a neutral alternative. Reflecting this trend, new standards of official usage for occupational titles have been established by the U.S. Department of Labor and other government agencies; for instance, in official contexts, terms such as firefighter and police officer are now generally used in place of fireman and policeman. See Usage Note at man.

My view is similar, but slightly different. Sperm is sperm, egg is egg. If those were human life i'd be in a hell of a lot of trouble as i destroy sperm every time i pee, and women would be killing an egg every time they menstrated. Those are basicly cells that contain raw data. Genetic blueprints for building a person. A fertalized egg is the same thing because, at that stage, nothing is yet being built, it's still just genetic info. Once the cells begin to divide, however, you have a growing person inside you, and at that point i believe that it is human life, not simply raw information.

I think we're on the same side though biggrin

uh...dude. I neve rimplied that the sperm and egg were anythign but what you described. I stated purly that human life begins the moment the sperm meets the egg.

i know, i'm saying that my view is the fertalized egg is still just invormation, and dosn't become life until the cells begin dividing, hense turning information into substance. It may not seem like much, but it matters when debating things like the morning after pill.

I can't see how. By the time the morning after pill takes affect, that division has already taken place.

That's part of the point, Mindcandy. Who are we to decide when it becomes a person? Why is it not a person one day, and the next it is?

Cell division make sense as a definite point; I disagree, but it makes sense. However, when they say, "It's not a person until after the first trimester! Or maybe the second trimester. Birth?" It's like, "Why is it a person then, but not the day before? Is there some magical event that occurs and suddenly it's a person?"

Thus, the person fairy!
