2 Timothy 1:16 - 18

While I rather like Onesiphorus, I'm not sure what this is referring to.

Workin' on this one, gimme a bit...

Take your time.

Quote:
Sorry, that was bad usage on my part. The second judgement would be the final judgement, whereas the first was just a decision of where they go to immediately after death. The first isn't so much a judgement, though.

Not insomuch, no.

Quote:
Doesn't Christ explains the Kingdom of Heaven through wordly examples, though?

He has, but this doesn't appear to be one of those cases.
In this case, he appears to be using the threat of earthly imprisonment to encourage his followers to pay their debts. But that is, as mentioned earlier, only an interpretation.

Quote:
Firefall. I'm rethinking that last statement.

Which thread?

Sorry for my slow responses, but work is a little busy right now.

Hmm, they both deal more with those who died prior to Christ's resurrection.
Definitely, in the case of the first. The second is a little less specific.

As regards whether Jews and the early Christian congregation actually believed in some form of purgatory, and that prayers for the dead worked, it's pretty certain that they did. However, trying to prove that purgatory exists using the Lutheran bible is very difficult (many Catholics hold that he removed Mac mostly because of the statement you quoted earlier, which denied his, "by faith," position).

Personally, if I was trying to provide evidence for purgatory, my first port of call would be any passages that reference communication with a spirit that isn't of a necromantic nature. If you can build up evidence that there is some time between entering heaven or hell, and physical death, you can posit at least the existence of this intermediary area, which puts paid to the more Protestant view that you are judged immediately upon death, along the lines of, "Go straight to Jail [Hell, Heaven], do not pass Go [Intermediary]."

I think Alan Cuming is totally hot. He's got that 'bad little boy' thing going. And it makes the fact that he's a man-slut even more charming.

He was perfect casting for that part!

2 Timothy 1:16 - 18

While I rather like Onesiphorus, I'm not sure what this is referring to.
The verse is a contested one in regards to its meaning. Many Catholics hold that Paul is actually praying for Onesiphorus, posthumously, and that this is an example of prayer for the dead. Alternatively, Protestants prefer the more obvious - in my opinion - interpretation, which is that Paul prays for the family of Onesiphorous, because Onesiphorous was a decent man in life.

It hinges upon the interpretation of, "household," in this case: I'm not sure about the original Hebrew or Greek literation here, so I don't know if that sheds any light either way.

It's certain that Jews and most of the early Christian congregation prayed for the dead, but that proves little since they could easily have been as, "mistaken," as others. What isn't certain, obviously, is whether those, "in the know," such as Paul, also did so - (counter-)evidence of such an example would swing the argument one way or another quite heftily. Hence some of the focus upon this verse.

The thread is called Purgatory, third from top of non-stickies in FF, I think.

I know that hoping for a CD of the soundtrack would just be an unreal expectation but if they don't eventually release that on a DVD... I will 'splode!!! scream
