Typically it's because brute forcers work on dictionaries, so that it cycles through word by word through words of varying length (typically 6-8 letters, sometimes more) but it's not too common to cycle through combinations of words.
Picking any single word or phrase is easy enough to crack given some time, but throwing in variables increases the time it would take to try out all those variables. Basically, for every variation you add so much more time it would take to crack it. And there are only so many numeral or valid symbols out there to use, and if you add in combinations of words it becomes even longer.
Basically, it's real easy to get a password that is just "Earth" any dictionary based cracker will eventually get to it; but "34r7h" becomes a bit harder because you expand from just letters, but given enough time you could cycle through combinations of letters and numbers to get it; "34rt)-(" becomes even more so because of additional characters; and "buriedearth" becomes harder because it combines words, which a lot of simple crackers won't do. You can of course add symbols or whatever to that to make a fairly memorable password that becomes too time consuming to crack, for awhile. They usually suggest sentences simply because it's something that is long, combines words (and possibly symbols) and most people can remember it without writing it down somewhere, since a lot of people tend to use the same password over and over or write them down on a notepad or file on their computer so they get compromised easily.
Not that I know a lot about these things, but thats just from what I know.

Yeah, that sounds about right, Wolffy. I thought brute force was just a program that cycled through the dictionary. But from the CNN article they said that a graphics card can be even more formidable. Not sure how the graphics card works.... @_____@ Thanks for the info, though. I just use random letters, numbers and symbols.

I just use random letters, numbers and symbols. It's not the fact that it's a graphics card that matters, just that it's cheap processing power. The more processing power you can dedicate to it, the more combinations of letters and numbers you can throw at it. You could use anything with decent power, but it helps when it's cheap and available too. It's the same reason they use clusters of PS3s for things like folding proteins. Cheap (for what you get), standard, and replaceable.

Eh, well my passwords are all godawful long. I get pissed off with g-mail logging me out every two weeks because it's the one that I mistype the most. I try to make them all seemingly random combination s of letters and numbers and symbols that do have some sort of meaning to me. That way nobody is going to guess them, but I don't have to write them down, either.

I'm thinking about making a new password so that it has more symbols in it. One password is half letters and half numbers. Are numbers good to use, too? I would think so...
Man, the thunderstorm last night woke me up. A very bright flash of white and a HUMONGOUS booming noise. I seriously thought the lightening struck something nearby on my street, but it didn't look like anything was disturbed. Then, of course, the pouring down rain. This happened twice last night. Geez. @_____@

I think many website wants you to use at least one number and one letter for your password, so yeah, numbers are good.

I've been trying to stay up later, so when I went to sleep at 2am, the storm came out at 2:30am and I'm all, "O___________O!" Then it did it again at 5am. Arg! XD

Did you go yet or are you waiting for Halloween? We're going this Thursday. The price was okay until they jacked the rates up a week before. @______@ I got tickets through my old school which has a discounted price on them ($40 instead of $59 regular price). Only problem is, when I paid for my friend's purchases, the website didn't give me the tickets. ): BUT I called up and they said to go to the Will Call Booth and ask for my tickets there (with ID and debit card and all that stuff). So hopefully that will work out. *Can't wait* Yeah, money is an issue for me, too, but I go every year and I always have a great time. Only sucks if there are too many people there. Or if it rains. Hopefully it won't rain! crying I said the same thing about your sig, too! I still love the animated Beetlejuice series!
