Well I just got back and for some reason backread through a 5 hour conversation about HoH, RP, mainstream, and Levi People that had a whole lot of s**t thrown around in one direction or another but the simple truth known to all regardless of how hard they want to argue it one way or another.
Simply:
1. Mainstream is good, it means that you can go between places being continuous and not have to explain to anyone why or how.
2. It has some issues with character power limitation...
3. ...but the solution is not to force everyone to adhere to a self-contained power structure based on seniority in the thread/guild.
4. Guilds themselves (as Gaia set them up) were tempting to start but in general not a good idea for mainstream settings, rather they function better as tournament thread-folders and secret hide-outs or things of that sort. It's just too hard for people to stumble across guilds and get involved in them compared to simply entering a thread.
5. That said, having a cohesive setting with several threads all contained in the same story setting or various locations within the same geography as seen by the mainstream (ex: 2003 World of Gaia guild) help to add FLESH to a world setting.
And that's all that really matters. Everything else is just posturing and character-tier politics.

HoH continues to exist because of a bunch of phone calls I received in the middle of the night while in Washington DC. I recommended against the mass ban and that message went to Doji and the rest of the mods active in Shem's office and they convinced Noraboo not to shut the whole thing down.
Then a bunch of HoH officials patted themselves on the back for "facing down" the admin.
rolleyes Ah HA HA HA.
Yes. Exactly. Thank you Noire for your benevolence and grace. It is by your unseen hand that we are still so privileged to post on this site.
I had a response to this but it'd take up too much of the page so I'll hold back.
