A great sale price, then!

Neat. Does that upgrade choice carry over between missions in the story/campaign?

That is a great way to showcase the mutations. More games could stand to do that...

The continuing story of Kerrigan must be good, too, huh?
PostPosted: Tue Dec 03, 2013 9:04 pm

It was. Believe me, it was truly a great find. While I did not find a single deal on Transformers, the deal on Heart of the Swarm was most satisfying. Now to wait for the Protoss installment . . .

Yes, the mutation you choose is permanent- meaning from that point forward in the game, not just the level. You choose a mutation, you keep it. The downside of this would be you lose the other half of the gene possibility. here . . .

Abathur is easily a favorite character now. I love the way he speaks. At about 3:30 or so, he discusses the mutation of the zerglings. As for Kerrigan . . . oh yeah. She is great in this game. The ending is also quite profound where she finally has her showdown with Mensk.

The Protoss are my favorite race, so I'll likely jump at all 3 when it is released.

That's really a neat idea for the RTS genre. I'm sure upgrade paths work normally in skirmishes, but that adds a lot of flavor and replayability to campaign mode.

Wow, the cutscenes alone make that game look amazing! Abathur does seem like a pretty cool character.

Yeah, I adored Abathur. He always managed to make me smile. The game was a tad short, but when taken in context as the extension of Wings of Liberty, it is just fine. As for the Protoss, I loved them most of all. I loved the thought of them having the dual life bar (shields and life).

Most of all, their plasma cannons were the turtle-style dream. A couple rows of these bastards, and nobody is getting in without cost.

They get so many fun mechanics, like stealth/phase soldiers, too. Zerg / Undead (W3) have never been my play style, but I can play the Terrans as well.
PostPosted: Thu Dec 05, 2013 6:37 pm

Of the three, I believe the zerg are the most straightforward. The infamous "zerg rush" tactic is easily done. In fact, the aforementioned zergling mutation can facilitate that. One way (the path I chose) allowed for wings, giving zerglings the ability to leap over terrain and lunge at an enemy quickly. The other mutation was to create three (I believe) units from only one larvae, quickly building a mass of ground troops before the enemy knows what hit them.

I was okay with terrans. Given my ability to hold my own in Heart of the Swarm for longer than I thought, I am considering restarting the Terran campaign again and holding off cheating for as long as I can.

I just tend toward the standard (Terran/Human/Orc) and magical (Night Elf // Protoss) RTS play styles.
PostPosted: Sat Dec 07, 2013 4:32 pm

Yeah, I tend to overspecialize in games. Either the puppetteer in the background sending others to do my bidding, or to go like a tank and take it all on the chin. Unfortunately, RTS does not support that as easily. No, they need a more balanced approach . . . some distance, some ground pounders, some support, etc.

something worth noting in Starcraft II, both portions out now have a dedicated button for "all offensive units" so you can go all-in rather quickly. I used the hell outta that for the zerg.

Balancing an RTS, especially when you have the expectations heaped on that Blizzard does from SC1, has got to be one of the hardest things to do.

So the button/command just auto-selects all units of that type? That's a nice feature.
PostPosted: Sun Dec 08, 2013 10:16 pm

Not precisely. You can hold ctrl and click to select all of a certain unit on the screen. The button I mentioned is all offensive units on the map. Everybody you command that can hurt others. One click, and your entire army is selected. That makes for great overwhelming tactics.

Yeah, I played a level or two of Wings of Liberty using the "build more and more constantly" and "send all you have at the enemy" tactic. Works for me! 4laugh

If you're at all into Tower Defense games, the Kingdom Rush series is one of the best:
http://armorgames.com/play/12141/kingdom-rush
http://armorgames.com/play/15717/kingdom-rush-frontiers

I mention it because it features some more RTS-like mechanics in that 1 of the 4 core tower types is dedicated to producing units that battle (and thus stop in their tracks) the mobs so your towers can hit them more. It really adds a big element of strategy to the genre.
