I might get some of those magnets at some point, that's the first type I've seen that looks like it'd be practical.

At the gamestore that I frequent, one of the guys custom built a bunch of Assault Marines on flying bases. They were all modeled in the process of landing (aka feet down) but he had one made as just a showpiece of an Assault Marine fighting a Gargoyle in midair.

So, what exactly are the Marines best for? They aren't the best shootey, and they aren't really the best Melee army, that's the Orks.
I suppose their ability lies in that each individual Marine is an army in and of himself, capable of almost anything.

The guardsmen are the Anvil and the space marines are the Hammer. Or would that be other way around.... @.@ Space marines are more versatile in both roles or just either one, their truest strength lies in their highest survivalbility with their power armours.
While most 40k weapons would cut down other forces like grass space marines are know to withstand againts almost any odds they encounter (this also includes chaos space marines).
Space marines are adaptive to all combat situations, with large variety of gears to take down almost any enemies and with the support of high armour save and leadership, you´ll rearly see them end up running away in a middel of a battle or die as quickly as most troops that marches in a openfield.
I personally had many experiences where a squad sergeant, only model left againts a mob, holds that squad locked in for few rounds before dying (all thanks to oppoments bad dice rolls. ^^"), or a commander/librarian/chaplain taking down a squad of 5 to 10 models alone.
Even thought space marines are not commonly equipped with bolter+pistol+ccw combo like chaos does, they still will get the job done. Now with the new codex and vehicles and gear rules, their are mostlikely even more adaptive and versatile army, a force to be recon with.

Hm, ok.
I went against Orks and IG in the game I played, and I had to become a Shootey army against the Orks, and then had to go into melee against the IG.

Obviously certain armies require certain ways of handling them. Trying to out shoot the Imperial Guard would be foolish, while horde armies require a lot of whittling down before you can lay on them with chain sword and power fist. The best thing to do is to fight the shooty stuff and shoot the fighty stuff!

Those things happen with just a single lucky throw of the dice. I've seen a second edition battle were a single lascannon wielding Guard trooper killed an entire army of Blood Angels holed up in a fortress with a single lucky shot during the first round.

For a balanced army, you want your few squads of Marines, a good HQ, a Chapter Master would be helpful with his Orbital Bombardment. Then you want to get maybe 1-2 squads of Assault Marines or Bikers, for elites some Assault termies or Vanguard, for a shooty army, just get afew tanks/ Devi squads, and some normal termies or Sternguard.
