Seamus jumped up onto Lori's lap to watch.
Toby dramatically lifted his hand off of the box. The lid roiled a bit, and then a rather fuzzy head popped out, all orange and white and peach with yellow eyes. This cat had a pink nose, and he had been in the shelter for a long time when Toby found him. He was a ragdoll mix, loved to be pet and held and carried, and didn't scratch things apart. What more could a man ask for for his clingy girlfriend?
Seamus meowed. Hello, Stupid Kitty! He'd smelled you before! The new cat meowed back, then squinted and began purring. Stupid kitty...

Maia stared, eyes widening. A cat! She'd wanted one ever since she'd come to Arizona. She scooped the cat out of the box and began stroking it. "He's gorgeous!" she beamed at Toby. "Thank you!" And he seemed to like Seamus. She set the cat down to hug Toby tightly.
"I love you!"

The look on her face was completely worth it. Even Dari was grinning. The cat was dead weight and just sort of tipped over into Lori's lap when Maia left it to hug Toby. Toby laughed and hugged her back. "I love you too!"
Rosie barked at the cat. The cat didn't care.
"He's a male, about five years old," Toby said, "and he's been living in Dari's room. He has a litter box and a bed and everything, we just had to hide him for a couple days.
"We picked him up on the way in," Lori said, raising the hand that was not petting the fluffy purring cat.

Five years old? Hm. Where'd he been until he'd moved in with Dari? She released her hold on Toby to sit back next to Lori and pet the kitty. "Does he have a name? What should we call him?"

"Nope. They just called him Muffin at the shelter, so you can name him whatever you want," Toby said.
Rosie came over to sniff the new cat, and the new cat kneaded the air. Rosie decided the cat was not a threat. Seamus gave his usual prrt and perked to ask for attention too. he was still her favorite, right?!

Maia scooped Seamus up. "Look Seamus, I have a new best friend for you." She petted both cats happily. "You'll have to help me choose, Toby. I've never named anyone before."

"Oh no, that's all you," Toby said. "You can give it time. He hasn't had a proper name in a while. A few more days can't help."
Seamus huffed. A best friend? Pfhah! That was just a normal cat! He did seem rather mushy, though. It was kind of cute. Lori rolled the cat back onto Maia's lap and it stood to sniff her face.

Maia frowned slightly; naming something as special as a cat seemed like a difficult task! As the cat was moved back onto her lap she smiled and scratched his ears. "Shelter life, huh? You'll be the most spoiled kitty in the world. Besides Seamus, anyway." Seamus was definitely the most spoiled cat sidhe in the world.
Luca gave Lori's hand a squeeze.

"He'll have to have less cake than Seamus," Dari said, "but I looked online and there are a lot of cat-friendly baked treats." Spoiled? Oh, definitely. This cat had three people to spoil him at home!
Lori turned to Luca and smiled, giving his hand a squeeze back.

"Sugar's bad for most animals," Maia observed. "I googled a pet safe cookie recipe earlier." For Toby's benefit, actually. Dari had helped with it. She hadn't been sure whether sugar would harm her love in werewolf form, so she'd made five dozen 50% less sugar cookies.
"They tasted awful," Luca told Lori in a loud whisper. "Bleh."

"That's true," Dari said with a nod. He wasn't sure himself if Toby would be affected by sugar in feral form and Lori hadn't been around to ask. They were already done by the time even Luca arrived.
Lori snickered. "Well they're not for you."

Maia scooped up her kitty and stood. "I'll go make popcorn," she said. "How much do you think we'll need?"
"I feel sorry for whoever they're for." Luca made a face. He definitely wasn't a fan of reduced sugar cookies!

The kitty simply let her. Seamus followed curiously. Why did it just let her carry it like that? Why were its toes moving?! Maia wasn't even doing anything!
"All of it," Toby said. It was butter-free, preservative-free, ready to be popped and strung. They also had dried fruit and nuts. Dari followed after, and only then did Lori respond to Luca's odd misunderstanding.
"I'm sure they're for Toby..." he reasoned, "I mean, it's a full moon tonight. He's going to turn."

Luca stared. Realization dawned and he paused. He swallowed, and then said. "Oh right. Great. I'm sure he'll like them." Werewolves were real too? His expression spoke volumes: he'd had no idea. "Do you want to open your present?" he asked.
"Seamus wants to help." Maia set the kitty on the counter, then bent to pet Seamus. "You can't chase anything that comes to eat from the Christmas tree. Promise?"

Lori's brow furrowed and he couldn't help but laugh a bit awkwardly. "I just... I mean I assumed you knew..." He pulled Luca to him in an affectionate headlock and kissed his head before releasing him. "He's totally tame. The transformation itself is pretty painful, but he just comes out of it a big furry Toby. Really pretty dog-wise.
"Oh? Don't you want to wait until tomorrow?" Now was not the time to give Luca his, at least not the one not under the Christmas tree. They were going to be stringing food soon!
"Mmnope. No cats on the counter," Toby said. He put the kitty down on the floor with Seamus, who was paying attention to Maia. He meowed in agreement. He definitely would not chase things that came to eat from the Christmas tree. Mostly because he then would not get cake.
