Ikkoku had always had a knack for manipulating wind chakra, despite coming from a clan that was famous for lightning techniques. He supposed it was for the best, though. With his eyes as bad as they were, he wouldn’t be able to focus lightning attacks on distant targets, anyway. If anything, he preferred lightning techniques that spread over a wide area and could hit multiple targets. Then again, any technique that had a large attack range would be good for him. Once he was finished with molding wind chakra, he decided to practice his family’s specialty. Concentrating, he began to feel electricity gradually surging through his body. Focusing it in his hands, he was able to conjure up a few sparks from his fingertips. Balling his right hand into a fist, he punched the trunk of the tree he was sitting in, sending light shocks through the tree. Unfortunately, the force of the chakra-charged punch knocked him off the branch, sending him falling towards the ground. Desperate, Ikkoku tried to focus his chakra into both his hands and feet so as to get a grip on the tree. Despite getting several scrapes and splinters on his hands, he managed to slow his fall enough so that he could land on his feet.

Thankful he survived yet another trial of his stupidity, Ikkoku looked upwards to see how far he had fallen, only to gaze at yet another problem. The sparks from his lightning chakra molding had ignited a few of the tree’s branches. Great. Now he had started a forest fire. Wait. This was perfect! This was a chance for him to practice his wind manipulation on a larger scale! Focusing, he began to remove the oxygen from around the top of the tree, creating an area with less oxygen than the surrounding area. With less oxygen to burn, the flames began to go out. His technique was working! After a minute or so of vacuuming out the air around the flaming branches, the fire was no more and the tree had survived with only minor damage. Hopefully nobody had noticed the fire and he could still graduate. Relieved, he sat down and began to meditate. This was something he knew couldn’t harm him or anything else. At least, he hoped so.

Ikkoku wasn’t exactly an expert on meditation, but he figured it wasn’t any harder than daydreaming. Closing his eyes, he let his mind go blank and let his chakra do the thinking for him. He wasn’t sure how to describe it, but it was like he was seeing his chakra flowing through him. The smooth flow of wind and the violent discharge of lightning created a bit of a show for him. It was somehow like his personality. There were a lot of things that didn’t really peak his interests and left him calm, cool, and collect. On the other hand, there were things he felt strongly about and got him energized, ready to take action in order achieve his goals no matter the cost. Ikkoku wondered if other people saw things like this when they meditated. He’d heard about stuff similar to what he was seeing in his lessons, so it was possible. In any case, it was an insight into what made him…well…him. At least he knew he behaved true to his nature. The last thing he wanted to do was lie to himself. He then began to wonder about the correlation between chakra natures and souls. Were some souls stronger than others, just like some elements triumphed over others? Were some wills just naturally superior to others? Even more perplexing, were there some souls strengthened each other, making each more powerful than they would naturally be alone?

“Alright, now seeing as we are already out here, the next thing I am going to teach you is the Art of Substitution. Now listen up because I’m only going to explain this once. This is a…”

While Akane made sure to listen to every word that was being said, she was having a hard time focusing. Her back had begun to throb and her stomach churned as nausea set in. She was not in pain physically nor was she ill from heat stroke or anything like that. Fact of the matter is she hated being touched. It brought back memories that she made a point to keep locked away. Whenever they managed to escape the confines of her mind, she always became distracted which easily led her to getting hurt. Her arms folded beneath her breasts so that her hands came to rest on the opposite arms. She held them still even though she wanted to hastily drag them along her arms as if she were trying to dust off the fact that she’d been touched.

Only one other had managed to get so close to her when teaching her something and the fact that she had put so much trust in him is why hidden beneath her body suite there was a scar covering her entire back. Tough love is what the b*****d called it. A lesson of life was another excuse he’d use. No, the b*****d was just a bitter, abusive and neglectful man who took his frustrations out on a child because he was too much of a coward to try and exercise and face down the demon that caused all of his pain and grief in the first place. He, as much as she refused to admit it, was her motivation to become stronger, faster and just all out better than she currently was today.

Hands once again placed themselves on her shoulders and she was pulled back to reality. Thankfully though, this time she did not retaliate. She figured it was to happen once again sooner or later though she admitingly wished it didn’t happen at all. While her outer appearance was calm, she was inwardly cringing the entire time. After about three minutes of being ‘shown’ the hand gestures she would use to perform this technique, she moved away about three feet to the left and slowly practiced such gestures to get a feel for it. Over the course of a few hours, students were called up one by one to perform this technique. For some it took more than a single try and it was because of this that their egos had been knocked down a peg. Then it came down to her turn and she could practically feel all eyes turn to focus on her.

Slowly she inhaled through her nose and exhaled through her mouth to not only calm herself but focus on her goal. Doing this, she could feel her chakras settling into place and within the blink of an eye she was gone while a plank of wood remained in her stead. Moments later she poked her head out from behind a large tree that she had taken for shelter.

“Good job, all of you. Well that’s enough for today. Go on home and get some rest.”

As expected, her fellow classmates ventured off to go home but not Akane. This was a moment that she could not simply pass up. She wanted to continue to excel and the only way she could do that was if she were to continue on. She didn’t want to have to come back on a separate day where there would be nothing but distractions by her classmate’s pointless chatter. Once all others had gone, she left her hiding spot and made her way to her instructor.

“Sensei, I do not wish to stop today’s lesson. I want to move forward and as it stands I can not simply go home. Please, teach me more. I won’t take no for an answer. I will do whatever it takes to continue.”

He looked her over for a long time considering the request with a great deal of scrutiny. While it didn’t hurt to want to push yourself to your limits so that you could excel and surpass your peers, one did need to know when enough was enough. However, he could tell that she had meant what she said about not taking no for an answer. Pinching the bridge of his nose with his fore finger and thumb he debated on the best course of action. It would seem that a compromise needed to be made.

“Alright, I will continue with the lesson on one condition. I will give you three chances to get this technique down but if you are unable to do it within those three tries, you will go and get some rest and return tomorrow to try again with the rest of your peers without question. Do we have a deal?”

There it was again, the deafening silence. She did want to outright say yes, no matter how eager she was to get ahead of the others. If he was speaking of letting her have three tries at getting a hang of this technique then surely it had to be harder than the first three she learned and doing those did drain her as much as she wanted to deny it. She had to think this compromise through and make a sound decision that she would not regret later on. She had to make a decision that it wouldn’t taunt her for choosing later on.

“Deal.”

No words were shared other than the description of the technique and the instructions on what she must do to accomplish her goal. She focused on each and every word that left his mouth and clung to them like death did to a soul it was taking to the afterlife. She simply had to master this technique else she’d not forgive herself for being so foolish. Once all was said and done, she had begun to prepare herself. With a bit of difficulty she had managed to focus a small amount of chakra to the soles of her feet and once she was sure she had the right amount she chose her target. It was the very tree she had hidden behind after performing the Art of Substitution technique.

Within an instant she sprinted for the tree and managed to get three steps up the bark before falling flat on her back with a thud. She had resembled the average person goofing off and attempting to run up a wall without using such a technique. Her efforts to focus her chakra hadn’t been enough. That was one try down and now two remained. With a small growl she got back up on her feet and dust herself off before returning to her original position and again took on the task of focusing her chakras. Again she tried to run up the tree and she was able to add two more steps to her previous effort but then her concentration was stolen from her when a flash of light greeted her eyes as her sight once again returned to her and again she fell. Laughter echoed through her mind.

Ha! Did you really think I was going to make it easy for you? Pathetic. You should know this game by now and yet you still succumb to it. Have you not learned by now that you can never let your guard down? Worthless. You continue to prove just how much of a worthless piece of trash your father considered you to be.

Damn him! Did he never rest? Would he persistently steal away her peace? She slammed her fist against the ground before once again jumping to her feet. She would not allow him to ruin this for her and steal away her chances of becoming stronger…better than what she was now. She would not allow him to make a fool out of her. Not now, not ever. With a scream created from her frustration and determination she took off towards that tree once again, ran up the bark passing each and every branch and she didn’t stop until she was at the top of its canopy panting in attempts to catch her breath.

She did it. She had yet another technique under her belt and all because she refused to give in to the demon. All because she pushed herself to go further than any other would go. The corners of her mouth slowly turned upward until a smile had spread itself clear across her features. This was the first time she had truly smiled in a long time and was proud to have reached one of her goals. After having caught her breath, she scaled down the tree and faced her instructor.

“What else is there that I can learn?”

She had to be kidding. After all of that she wanted to continue? Just what was her goal…better yet what was the driving force that was pushing her? A sigh left the mans lips. He had a feeling that if he were to say nothing or even if he told her that had been enough for today she wouldn’t take that as an answer and she would pester and follow him until she got the answer she wanted. Eventually he had come to smile too. It had been a very long time since he had seen such drive in any of his students.

“There is one other technique to be learned but seeing how far you have come it shouldn’t take you too long to get the hang of it. It is a variation of Tree Climbing but it is known as Water Walking.”

“Water Walking?”

“Yes. The technique will allow you to walk across water as if it were a solid.”

Without any further explanation, Akane found herself being led down a dirt road. For a brief moment she hesitated as doubt started to claw at her. However, she pushed onward knowing that the doubt she was feeling was nothing more than an antic the demon was using to try and discourage her. Fifteen minutes went by until her nose was greeted by the scent of water trapped within the breeze that blew passed the two. Resting before them was a large river. This would be her final task and if she had any say in the matter she would nail it on her first shot unlike her attempts at tree climbing.

“Look, I can tell that you’re eager to get this technique down but you really should rest. You’ll do yourself no good if you don’t allow yourself to recuperate.”

Akane simply shook her head only to soon after speak softly. “I can’t afford to wait.”

Raising her left hand, she wiped the sweat from her forehead and then returned it to her side. She was determined now more than every. Saying nothing else she moved to the waters edge before coming to a stop. She stood there as if she was but a stone stuck to that spot but it was not because she was having second thoughts. She did this because it was here she decided to focus her chakras once again. Her shoulders slowly moved up and down as beads of sweat collected on her forehead once again. It was clear that the lessons of today had taken their toll on her and she was more than likely using what little bit of strength she had left to do this but as much as her instructor wanted to intervene, he wouldn’t. Doing do would do nothing but bring disappointment so he simply stood by and watched, ready to assist when the moment called for it.

In a completely relaxed and fluid motion, she took a step forward and then another. Her pace was not slow, nor was it rushed. She kept this up until she had gone at least ten feet out and away from the shore. Once out there, she went still again for a few minutes before turning around and returning. The moment both feet were on dry land, Akane fell forward landing on her hands and knees. The sound of foot falls rushing over to her danced in her ears but she didn’t move. She couldn’t move. She was completely exhausted and it was evident from how she panted for air.

“You did good kid. You’ve learned all the techniques the academy could teach you and surprisingly on your first day. It’s not too often that happens. All that’s left for you is to hone other skills and strengths, but not today. You need to rest.”

A sigh escaped through her nostrils as she pushed herself to sit. “And rest I shall. Thank you sensei for humoring me with my requests. I think I’ll stay here for a while longer.”

Her only answer was a curt nod before he ventured off back towards the rest of where this village’s people were. She had done good and had come that much closer to reaching her goal. In silence, she eased her self down to lay on her side before slipping into unconsciousness, enough where she could rest and regain her energy but not so much so she would be unaware of her surroundings and fall victim to a surprise attack.

Only four hours had passed since she lay her head to rest but she awoke with a start. Her legs itched and twitched, yet there was nothing there to cause such a sensation. This only could mean one thing. It was now time for her to move on, but she knew she still had much to learn here. Sitting up, she looked over her shoulder in the direction of the academy. She made the decision that she would return from her ventures whenever she could to continue her training here but she had to keep going. After she was up on her feet, she dusted herself off and began backtracking up the path that led her to the river side in the first place. She remembered that she hadn’t seen hide nor hair of a port on the way here so she figured that if she headed further west she would find it.

Hanai Kashiyasu ` Hidden Void

Hanai Kashiyasu watched the rest of her class mates try and fail to become original with their thought processes. After her performance, she had gotten a lot of stares as she made her way to her seat in the back of the room. There were still stares now. And whispers. Of course, she payed them no attention, and listened to the words of their instructor.

"Nice job everyone, we'll put a little more practice into it the next time. But right now we are moving on to Bushin no Jutsu. This particular..."

After the initial introduction to the Jutsu, Hanai spaced out. She thought of long dark nights, and the creatures that resided in the dark. How they had adapted to it so easily over the decades. Of course, while in the dark they didn't need their eyes- they relied on other senses. It made her wonder if her village, her clan, would amount to the same thing in the end. She wondered if they too, would feel no need to leave the dark, have no need to see...

The next transformation went without much of an incident. She succeeded in creating another copy of herself. Although she was more than certain that she could've created much more. But that would have required more chakra- something she was not sure she had enough of. A calm, unruffled coolness exhibited in the air around her. As she returned to her seat, listening absently to the instructor. She was confident now, and held no worries. However, she would have to do something about the stares she was receiving. Normally, such a thing would not have even caught her attention, let alone disturb her. But if she was to succeed with her initial plan, she would have to get them to stop.

When she felt a little prickle along the hair of her neck, she raised her eyes, boring into the sandy brown ones that gazed at her. Their owner blushed, and turned sharply. Apparently, they had not expected her to stare back. She watched him a little while longer, then turned her attention back to what the instructor was saying.

"You have all done quite well today. You can go home and relax. Be sure to practice the techniques you have learned and when you return tomorrow, we will jump right into the next..."

Hanai stood when class was dismissed, her feet silent on the wood of the floor.

"...darkness..."
"Kashiyasu of the Hidden Void...."
"...heard...orphan"
"Yeah, I heard that too....Her mother..."

Hanai barely listened to the whispers around her. So far, her plan was failing. She would have to come up with a far better one. One that would have no faults, no holes. The execution had to be flawless. She left the academy, the playful wind welcoming her. She took a moment to look up at the sky. She felt nothing as she surveyed the clouds. Light was a mysterious thing to her. She did not understand how people took such advantage of it. Wasting it. Abusing it. Their days were spent doing nothing useful, and it got under her skin.

She lowered her eyes to the ground, thinking of the darkness that lay beneath it. Creatures that lived in darkness never abused it. She would know. She was one of them. Hanai pushed a stray hair back behind her ear, pulling the cloth around her neck up past her lips. She began to walk, her foot steps mere whispers in the grass. It would be a long, uneventful night.

The hooded figure entered the large field of grass and various trees in random spaces. He was at the highest point of the rolling hills that gave you a complete view of the area that he was going to call his Training Grounds. Only his frown could be shown under the hood, the cloak covering his entire body as well. The wind started to blow causing his clothes to flap lightly with the breeze. A hand was raised out from between the opening of the cloak and reached up to the hood. The man slowly removed the hood revealing his features, his red eyes elegantly watching nature ahead of him. Virgil's eyes then peered over to the side for a quick moment before his body seemingly disappeared. In a split second after a body exploded into the ground where Virgil once stood. A couple yards away, he stood back up slowly with sort of a glare at whoever just tried to kill him. From the smoke a dark figure raised, their appearance couldn't be seen but only a shadow appeared. Without warning, five whips stabbed through the smoke and wrapped around Virgil's limbs and his neck. Then something started to sprout from the figure in the smoke, it was a demon-like wing. It then snapped open blowing away all the smoke around the figure revealing that it was the real Virgil in Tsukimono form. The clone gave a low "Tch..." noise as he didn't even try to move since he was being held by the whips from Virgil's fingertips. Virgil raised the clone into the air and started walking out of the crater to the clone in the air. Without saying anything Virgil's tale stabbed through the clone where the heart would be and it exploded into nothing but smoke. The whips went away and Virgil was left by himself.

// 318 words - Bushin no Jutsu Complete //

The moment of silence was cut short by a hail of kunai and shuriken started to rain down upon him. Virgil created the Multiple Finger Whips again and spun his hand around over his head with great speed creating a shield from all the kunai and shurikens. They were all around him stabbed into the ground while the land he was standing on was perfectly untouched. Virgil looked up seeing that the weapons came from ten clones that were created awhile ago before this training section began. There were a lot more clones that were made with his first appearance and not his Tsukimono form but they were to be used one section at a time. More shurikens and kunai started to rain down on Virgil, this time he dodged them all and continued soaring six feet above the land. The clones were quickly following behind him on their feet and catching up quickly. Virgil flew straight into the forest and a couple of the clones weren't paying attention and ran straight into a tree, the sound of the puffs of smoke signaled Virgil that two were down. Virgil made his way to the Great Tree, the biggest one in the forest and it was obvious by how freakishly huge it was. He flipped over having his feet land softly on the trunk of the tree and started sprinting up it. He wondered why he hasn't seen any of the other clones, but just as the thought came up they were circling him from the other side of the trunk.

Like the trunk of the tree was the ground they all attacked him at once. Virgil retaliated by covering his body with his wings and throwing them out just before the clones were about to hit them. They all fell from the tree but only five of them became smoke. The last three clones all worked together into throwing two of them back up to Virgil from the air and the last one crashed into the ground, the smoke form the crater mixed with the smoke the clone once was. Virgil stood on the trunk of the tree waiting for the clones to get close as they flew towards him. Without giving any warning whip came out of his fingertips and grabbed one of the clones. Virgil threw his hand down and the clone was slammed into the side of the tree, leaving smoke like all the others. The last one saw this and decided to draw out a kunai just in case Virgil decided to use those whips. But he didn't, instead he raised his hand up, and just when the clone was about to stab him, Virgil grabbed the back of it's head and slammed it's face violently into the trunk of the tree he was standing on. It took a minute but the last clone eventually puffed into smoke leaving Virgil in silence once again. He jumped all the way down from the tree but stopped himself before hitting the ground using his floating ability to land softly in the grass next to the crater made by the third last clone who fell all the way down. "This is boring..." Virgil said to himself looking over the the side with his blood red eyes, it was the first words he spoke today and it was almost nightfall. Without saying another word his feet left the ground elegantly, and he exited the forest quickly soaring through the air and over by the large river that was soon to be his next training exercise.

Kekai had recently traveld to the Leaf village to enroll in the Shinobi Academy that was there, since he had heard some of the greatest shinobi of the Leaf village were trained there. After enrolling he had imideatly set off to find someone to teach him the basics of shinobi techniques. After walking around for some time he finally found a teacher who agreed to train Kekai privately, Kekai had been asked to not be normally enrolled, which consisted of going to the classes, he had asked that if he could find someone who would agree that he could be trained privately. While some on the admissions board thought this to be a strange request they didn't actually find anything truly wrong with wanting to not be in a large group where it would be harder to focus on the techniques. The man that Kekai had found hadn't told Kekai his name so Kekai refered to him as sensei. "Sensei could you teach me the Henge no Jutsu technique?" Kekai said knowing he had to start off with some technique regardless of how low it actually ranked, although he had heard that this was one of the harder Academy techniques to learn.

"Sure we can start with that." Sensei said, "Alright to do the Henge no Jutsu you need to first understand chakra control, but we will get into that later for now do these hand seals." he said, making the seals for Dog, then Boar, and then finally Tiger.

"Ok Sensei." Kekai said, repeating the hand seals that his sensei had shown him. "Henge no Jutsu." he said after completing the last of the seals. After saying this Kekai turned into an exact copy of his sensei.

"Oh, nice job. Not many do it so successfully on their first try." the real sensei said.

"Thank you Sensei." Kekai said thinking that this was easy and that he had no reason to be worried about these techniques.

"Okay Sensei now can you teach me something a little more difficult?" Kekai said smiling for the first time since the Hidden Katana village had been taken over. Seeing someone walking up a tree Kekai abruptly said "Sensei can you teach me how to do that." pointing over to the academy student who was learning how to walk up trees by channeling chakra through his feet.

"Hmm, oh that, well I guess we could try it but that is a fairly advanced technique. Ah, what the heck let's give it a try any ways." Kekai's sensei told him as he lead the way over to one of the trees that were used to practice this technique. "Okay for this technique you need to run up to the top of the tree without completly killing the tree. The key to this is to focus the precise amount of chakra into your feet which bonds you to the surface of your choice. While the amount of chakra used is very small it must be precise otherwise it won't work. Once you learn this technique walking on water is a much easier task and the same is true for the reverse. In short if you were to have wanted to try water walking first then this would be easier after you learned how to water walk, and vice versa." Sensei said explaining the finer points of this technique. "Also this technique isn't limited to trees, you can use this on just about any surface including ceilings, walls, and even cliffs." Sensei said demonstrating how to walk up the tree by doing it himself. "Okay now you try it."

"Wow that is kinda cool and after this will you teach me to walk on water, Sensei." Kekai said gradually understanding how this technique was preformed. After adjusting his chakra flow so that he had some chakra gathered in his feet Kekai began to attemp climbing up the tree. About half way up the tree Kekai lost his focus and fell, to which his sensei laughed at. "Hey, stop it sensei I am not as good as you at this."

"How can I help but laugh at you." He said coming down from his postion in the tree. "Either way look at it from my point of view you would have probably laughed to if it were me who fell. I may have forgotten to mention this but I figured that you would have known right off the bat that during this technique at your level you can't afford to lose concentration during the training."

"Well I kinda figured that out but I didn't know that this would happen. I though more along the lines I would just stay there if I wasn't really focusing on it."Kekai said getting up from the ground and standing back up. "Alright here I go again." He said procedding to walk back up the tree and this time he made it about three fourths of the way up before falling down again, but this time insted of landing on his rear again he landed on his feet. "Gah I thought i had it that time." He said, upset that he didn't make it all the way to the top before he fell. "Okay one last try I know I can do this." Kekai said determined to get it right this time. After running up to the tree Kekai ran up it and finally made it to the top, but this time was different this time he didn't fall he actually stayed up on the tree. "Yes I got it."

"Ok for now since it has gotten late and it would be hard to train outside I have decided to teach you a few techniques and 2 more jutsu." Sensei said to Kekai in an empty classroom, since most of the other students of the academy had gone home to sleep for the night, but since Kekai had also asked if he could stay at the academy over night since he had no where else to stay, this was agreed to on the condition that Kekai also help clean up the academy. "The first thing I am going to teach you is the Bushin no Jutsu or Clone technique as some call it." Sensei said explaing a little about what they were going to be doing. After preforming the nessicary hand seals he made a clone"Something to be noticed about this jutsu is that the clones are completely intangible and will not effect the enviroment at all. This means that things like normal people do, like crushing grass they walk on and kicking up dust won't be present when dealing with the clones. Also they will dissapate when ever they come into contact with someone or something." he said smacking the clone with his hand making it puff into smoke and then dissapearing. "Ok Kekai now you try it. The hand seals to preform this jutsu are, Ram, Snake, and then Tiger in case you hadn't seen them when I did it." He said smirking slightly.

"Alright Sensei here goes nothing." Kekai said preforming the seals and then proceding to say Bunshin no Jutsu. After doing this he made an exact replica of himself which he was very proud of. "Heh, that was too easy Sensei teach me something a little more difficult please." Kekai said a little disapointed that this jutsu was so easy to master.

Bunshin no Jutsu complete.

"Fine, you little smart allek. Next is the Kawarimi no Jutsu, but more commonly refered to as the art of substitution. This is one of the very basic ninjutsu and is fairly easy to master but is still don't take it for granted as it can and most likely will save your life in the future." Sensei said a little upset that Kekai was progressing so fast and that their time as student and sensei was drawing closer to an end with each passing moment. "Any way this jutsu has a slightly longer hand seal sequence than others but what ever the order is Ram, Boar, Ox, Dog, and then finally Snake. I'm not gonna show you what the end result is but you should be able to do this one fairly easily."

"Ok Sensei, here I go." Kekai stated, then muttering under his breath he repeated the hand seals names "Ram, Boar, Ox, Dog, Snake." then saying in a normal tone of voice, "Kawarimi no Jutsu." Upon saying this Kekai was just engulfed in a puff of smoke and nothing more. "Dang it, I guess I failed." he said dissapointed that he had failed to preform this jutsu succesfully as he had done with the others.

Snickering Sensei said, "Well there is a suprise, I was sure you were going to get that one right off the bat, but oh well guess you may not be getting this one right away. Although I can't really say that I am suprised you may have done the jutsu correctly just couldn't think of anything to replace your self with. Or maybe you just can't preform this jutsu like you thought you could." he said this with a little bit of smugness finally seeing Kekai mess up on one of the simplest jutsu that a ninja could ever learn. "Any way it is getting kind of late maybe we should just finish up here and then get some rest."
