Ulani was the elder here by millenia - so why did she feel as if she was a child being scolded by her mother?
She rubbed her temple with her thumb and sighed. "All of us, in one way or another. Amara and Fletcher are all right, they live higher up on the mountain so they weren't around ... but their son was injured fairly badly. Terexin was killed ... Marisa, his daughter, was injured ... Ulrich was injured ..."
She ran her fingers through her long black hair, then picked up her sewing once again. "Those who survived, survived ... but a part of all of us died that day."

Kara looked at Ulani sadly, wishing inside for a good next life, if elves even had next lives.
"You didn't tell us it was that serious, it's no wonder why Ulrich was so..." she trailed off, pessismistic, no... sometimes she felt that Ulrich's feelings today was borderline cynical.

Ulani nodded slowly. "Ulrich was affected the most, I think, of us all. Because he's ... come to blame himself, I think ... as guardian of the family, he thinks he's failed in his duty because he couldn't protect his son ... couldn't even give him a chance to protect himself."
She started working on the bottom hem. "These people, whoever they are, they've found a way to keep anyone - elves included - from detecting or sensing their presence."
She paused, then looked up at Kara again. "There are times when I wonder ... if we should perhaps have another child, more children ... but at the same time, it would almost feel like we're trying to replace the others who are gone now ... and I feel guilty for that."

"It's not replacing," Kara said simply as she picked up what she was doing again.
She focused on making sure it was hemmed well, besides she wanted it to look nice.
"They'll never be the same as the children you've lost, you'll know that, and they'll know that," she told Ulani, "It's still fresh though, six years isn't that long, but understand it would never be replacing. Evenually, not now... maybe years from now, you'll have to decide how you want to keep living and if it means to have another child. To feel that raising of another little one, you shouldn't feel guilty about it."
This coming from someone who had way too many children.

Ulani smiled, reassured somewhat by Kara's words.
"I would dearly love another," she admitted softly. "And though it may on the one sense seem too early to start a family again ... two and a half years is far too long to be without any children at all, not when you've had them in your lives for more than three thousand years."
She continued her hemming. "I'll speak with Ulrich about it again," she decided.

Kara nodded slowly at that though, it did make sense and as far as she knew the two didn't have any grandchildren so....
"You've talked about it before?"

Ulani finished the hem and held the kimono up for Kara's inspection.
"A few times," she nodded, "but we never decided anything definite. We've both got our reserves about it, but it's becoming more appealing to both of us ... no, that came out wrong." She laughed. "Though we both have our doubts, I'm getting closer to convincing Ulrich that he'll be able to protect another child ... which I suspect is his own biggest doubt."

It was the one thing about actually having a life span Kara thought silently to herself, if you had your child out live you, you've pretty much done your job. It was easier to get to that point if you were to grow old and die, once more brought back to the question was she immortal or not, it would be sad she thought to outlive her children.
"That's completely understandable," Kara replied fingering the work with pleasure, "Lovely Ulani..." she added.

"Thanks," Ulani smiled warmly. "What colour should I make the embroidery?" she asked Kara, lowering the kimono and looking at it again. "I think I've got thread in just about every colour imaginable." She laughed.
Since the embroidery would be the only thing to tell the outfits apart by.

Kara giggled at that, "Hmm... I don't know," she mused looking down at the two Seconds, after all with their hair colours there were very few colours that wouldn't look nice with them.
"Hmm... maybe something in a kind of green?" she mused.

Ulani reached for a spool of green thread and an embroidery needle. "Green it is," she smiled. "Though perhaps I should use a different colour for the second one? To make them different? Or the same colour and have just have their names as different on the fronts?"
She turned to the back of the kimono and started stitching it.

"I'm not sure," Kara admitted starting the cuttings for the obi, "I guess it depends on how different the characters are, since it'll be the girls and me trying to get them dress," she laughed a bit, otherwise I fear I might not be able to tell the difference."

"But Skye is Elnara's daughter," Ulani pointed out with a smile. "And Elnara would have no difficulty at all distinguishing between the two. Since of course it's her first language, right? And if you're here then one of us could read them." She laughed softly.
Her needle moved swiftly, surely, her eyes seeing the pattern before there was anything on the back, making her embroidery flawless.

Kara smiled, "That is a good point it shouldn't be a problem as long as I ask you, afterwards when we get back it'll be okay too, since Yue will just have another set of clothes to dress Miyu in."

Ulani laughed again. "And I'm sure Elnara has more clothes for Skye as well," she grinned.
From the other room came the sound of the door opening and closing, and footsteps came towards the kitchen. A boy appeared in the doorway ... he appeared to be in his mid-teens, and had shoulder-length golden blond hair. Despite an ugly scar running from his right eye to the corner of his mouth, he was very handsome, as elves went. He was slight of build, but well-muscled, and he had a bow and quiver on his back.
"Nana-thel," he called as he entered the kitchen: but when he saw Kara he stopped in his tracks and stared. "Oh," he said in English, scratching the back of his neck, his face flushing. "I'm sorry ... I didn't know you had company ..."
He kept staring at Kara, though he knew it was rude; but he couldn't help it.
"I'm sorry," he apologized, "but ... I have the strangest feeling that we've met before ..."
