Kaden hurried to the Lieutenant’s head quarters and stepped in quietly when he got there. He found that the Lieutenant was not alone and seemed very busy. He and the three other people present were sifting quickly through papers.

One would shout a name, “Roren.”

And the Lieutenant would answer, “Available, but not suited enough.”

“Asher.”

“Good.”

“Hailey.”

“Ah, put her in second recruit.”

“Blaise.”

“ . . . . No . . .” he then said quietly. The Lieutenant looked up and saw Kaden then stopped shuffling.

“Kaden,” he said gravely, “Now is not a good time to discuss with me Blaise’s position. Please be on your way.”

“Sir?”

“We’ve hit a crisis. A village due east past Rush Waterfalls is being held by . . . the Dragon Slayers. The sergeant of this troop is a beast. He has many with him, there’s not a specific figure, but a good number is all you need to know. We need to rid the village of the troop because there is no way we can take the entire village into our hold, there’s just too many at one time. We are finding recruits now and leaving in the eaves.”

“Is there anything I can do?”

“Round up the best. Anyone you can think of. But, Kaden, you are not to go on this mission. You have another purpose and I can’t lose you on this one.”

“But Lieuten—”

“That is an order, Superior!” He barked. Kaden looked to the ground angrily and nodded. He turned and left quickly and went back to his own home. His bird, Ayen, had returned with a new note.

Expect me within the hour.

-Sarah

The note was probably written some time ago so he could be seeing her any moment. He sat in a chair nervously and waited.

Blaise heard Tax’s warm voice and looked toward it.

“Tax?” She said, “Is that you?”

Tax nodded then frowned, remembering that she could no longer see a gesture.

“Yes.”

He walked to her side then helped her sit up and wrapped her hands around the cup of tea delicately. He helped her bring it to her lips and she drank it slowly. He felt much better in her presence, much less alone. She let go of the cup but not his hand.

It was still strangely comforting, as it had been earlier in the day. She couldn’t understand why he made her feel this way, or what she was feeling. But it was a good feeling. A feeling she liked, but she felt that she could not trust it.

Tax brought his hand up and touched her cheek. She turned her head away and he put his hand down.

“Why do you draw away?” he said quietly.

“I . . . I don’t know. You are very kind, Tax. Thank you.” Blaise said, letting go of his hand, “Could you please . . . please get Rosette and Chrono? I want to talk to them.”

Tax nodded solemnly and stood, walking out of the room. He saw where Chrono and Rosette were sitting and said, “Blaise wants to talk to you.”

"You're cruel. I just want something to help me relax!"

"Rosette, getting shnakered off your feet is not going to help you relax. Remember what happened last time?"

"Oh, come on, he healed just fine didn't he?"

Chrono sighed and shook his head.

"Just wait here, I'm going to see if Blaise needs anything else."

As soon as Chrono was out of sight, Roette sprang to the nearest cabinet in search of anything with a tad bit of alcohol in it.

Blaise could hear Chrono come in as Tax took a seat in the corner. She could feel their presences but something was missing. Actually, it was a someone.

“Chrono, could you—” she paused, not entirely knowing if she wanted to tell them just yet. “Could you please call in Rosette? I need to talk to her. She needs to know. She needs to know about the prophecy.”

"Ah...."Chrono began, scratching his head. "I think she's already paniced enough. She was asking me for alcohol a minute ago. Perhaps this could wait?" He proposed innocently.

Rosette was estatic now. Bliase seemed to up-tight to have any kind of good drink in her cabients, but in fact she had quite a few. Rosette grabbed a bottle in each hand and went to go sit out on the front pour to enough her drink. It was something to get her mind off her troubles...

(Never pegged Rosette to be an alcoholic, did ya?)

Blaise nodded and held her mug of tea for warmth.

"Per'aps." she said, "You two should get some sleep. It's been a long day and as soon as I can get back up on my feet I'll be at Rosette for some training." she finished with a small fake smile.

"Sure." Chrono said gratefully. "I'll just tidy up a bit in the kitchen and we'll camp out here tonight."

He'd only been out of the room for a few minutes when he came barreling back in.

"Blaise! Why didn't you say you kept that much alcohol in here?!"

Rosette was actually very good at holding her liquor, but this was an odd kind of brew. Foreign made, maybe dwarfish? No, she'd had that before, but whatever it was, she was already feeling a bit out of it.

"S'ome good 'hic' stuffy..."

Blaise turned towards where she heard Chrono and gave him a confused look. Alcohol? Why would he want to know about that? Then when she heard Rosette speak with a loopy slur she grinned.

“So, Rosette got into the alcohol, did she?” Blaise laughed, “I never keep alcohol for drinking purposes, Chrono. Actually, I can’t remember the last time I had a drink. Well, when you’re a Forester the aches, pains, and wounds come with it. As a last resort alcohol is a good disinfectant, but otherwise a sip or two will take the edge off pain. But by the sounds of it, Rosette had more than a sip or two. I’m sorry, Chrono. If I had known Rosette would get into it I would have hidden it better.”

"Ugh... this is going to be a long night..." Chrono groaned. "You just wait, you're gonna wake up tomorrow and open your eyes and the first thing you're gonna see is my bloody battered face from trying to take those bottle away."

Needless to say, Chrono didn't sound to happy as he left the room again.

"Okay, Rosette, time for bed."

"But,but, but! I-I...I don't wanna Chrony-wony! Man, yous gotta tries dis bit! Wow, it's the bestest!"

"Rosette, don't drink all that!"

THUNK!

"Dammit...I was trying to STOP you from passing out. Now your going to blame me for that headache in the morning..."

Blaise frowned and turned away from Chrono after the “you’re gonna see” comment. You’re gonna see.

Not anymore.

Blaise growled and threw the blankets off herself, throwing her legs to the side of the bed and putting her feet tenderly to the ground.

Tax stood immediately saying, “Blaise you shouldn’t be getting up. You need to be resting.”

“I will not lie idle and powerless in my own home!” She spat, “I am not a helpless child and can take care of myself. I know my limits and will rest when I feel like resting!”

Blaise stood strongly and did not falter. She took up her stave and walked boldly to where she knew the door was. Without mistake she went from her room to the kitchen to put out fresh food and water for little Ciaran. Blaise was able to find things in a heartbeat. She only wondered how she was going to get along outside her home.

Galdin stared at the scene from his position in silence for a moment. He knew that in his current situation there wasn't much he could do to help the prisoners, but the longer he waited the bigger risk they would have of being executed. "Until the rest of the foresters come theres not much we can do...." Galdin stopped as he heard one of the soldiers yell something about the others needing to follow the commands of Algren.

Galdin had heard this name before, he had heard that foresters had moved on villages in similar situations only to be ambushed and slaughtered by his men. Realizing this, Galdin looked back at Cadie, "I need to get out of town without being noticed, I know that you risked your life helping me so far, but I ask for your aid one more time." He knew that he had to warn the other foresters before they fell upon Algren's trap.

Cadie was silent for a moment, "so there's nothing you can do..." she said more as a statement than a question. She weighed her options and decided upon the only possible one. "I'll help you...but I would ask one thing in return...if the foresters do really exist, I would like to join them, my life means nothing to these people living here, they wouldn't even miss me." she said quietly. She crawled back and climbed down from the roof, silently moving the crate back where it had been so that Galdin could get down as well. Once he was down, she moved the crate back and covered the marks on the ground again. Carefully, she led him through the alleys back to the edge, darting once more across the small open area. She went to the place where they'd left their things and picked up her pack and everything else she'd left. She turned to Galdin, "What next?" she asked.
