Gone Arai Hi.... Just thought I'd introduce myself. I'm originally a flute player, but about a year and a half ago I picked up Alto for Jazz band, and I love it. I'm currently playing a Jupiter Deluxe SAS 767 Alto (Either from 1998 or 1988.. can't tell). I love it... High F# key's bent a little, but I'm not gonna use it anyway... I'm on second Alto and I like it that way... (The lower range of alto is appealing... I don't like Duck-Soprano-Like sound.) I play my alto for Marching, Pep, and Jazz.... So... yeah... Heitai: Haven't heard of it, therefore, couldn't suggest it. Usually you want to get a well known brand, so you know what you're getting. Try snooping around E-Bay, that's where I've gotten both of my horns, and I love them both. (Both Jupiters.. I'm a Jupiter Nut.)Or, If you liked your old Yamaha, try a newer one of those. Usually you can test out a new horn if it's in your area or at a music store, to see if you like it or not.... But try to stick with known brands. Yeah, Here Cannonball's are quite known, I was just wondering if anybody has tried one. Larry Panella (Jazz Director at University of Southern Mississippi) says he prefers them over his Selmer Mark 6, so I was just looking to see if anyone had tried it. I'll take you advice and try a bunch out when I goto music store. @ fugly_zakura: Yeah, Bari Sax rocks smile

I've tried Cannonballs they're good horns but i wouldnt take them over a Mark VI. The Selmer Super Action 80 Series II and III play better in my opinion. I'd prefer to play Yanigisawa 991 or a Yamaha Custom Z which alot of great artists are choosing over The Mark VI.
I'm not downing The Cannonballs just that all the ones i've played didnt have the proper action or sound i wanted for classical or jazz. The basic setup is good the pads have nickel sound resonators. They are backed by some great artists out there so they arent bad. I've just never found one that i liked but it's different for everyone.
Just go out to a store that has one and try it out and go to several stores to try em out.

Qui-ti MHHornfreak __penguin__ Does anyone else here play improv on the sax? I learned how to today kind of.. its really fun! Just to make up stuff and play whatever.. I need to practice learning what notes sound good together and stuff but I never knew playing music that doesn't exist could be so fun! Of course whenever we play a chart and the director asks who's gonna solo on it i usually raise my hand. Improv is loads of fun it's great to see what kinds of licks you can pull out of your head listening to the rythmn section vamp a few choruses. Improv rocks my socks. I'm reading a book about it with a tonnn of scales (most of them have unbelievably long names) and it has a big section about improv. I've been practicing with it and it's improved my playing greatly.
@Benjis Fairy - It is my holiday and birthday presents, and also where my allowance from 2 years is going. Whee!I don't think that I could live without my allowence! My parents are buying it for me, but I'm an only child so I guess they don't have to qworry about siblings! I'm so excited, but buying it through the music service takes so long gonk

I play the alto and tenor. My bands so small though that I'm the only one. It sucks because most of the songs we play are level 2 or 1. gonk But all county is this week and hopefully my band teacher can get that clarinet position to switch so I don't have to learn clarinet in three days.

Any tips, anyone? The way I learned is tightening and loosening your chops so you go in and out of tune and get that "Wa-Wa" sound. My other way is just pushing with my stoumach. I play flute too, and that's how you do vib. on flute, so that's what I do. On fingerings, compared to flute, there's a few minor differences (no register key, C is fingered differently, different F# fingering, and more frequent use of Eb key).... The major difference in changing is the embouchure. I tend to not get enough mouthpiece in my mouth 'cause I'm used to not playing with any resistance... yup....

Tips for vibrato, eh? The way I learned was to push your bottom lip further up the reed then bring it back, repeatedly. Try it. Make a face like you're pouting, then bring it back to normal. Do that over and over again.
