      Ⅱ Autumn Vikare

Autumn had been browsing the festivities in something of a stupor, when a greenblood called out to her, promising tickets if she could make a mooncake worth selling. The spell was broken. Autumn did a doubletake.

Oh, please.

Smiling pityingly, Autumn exchanged a knowing glance with Caterpal. She might have been unfamiliar with these mysterious “mooncakes”, but she was practically a professional when it came to making sweets. Not everyone back at the outpost might have agreed with her, but not everyone had as fine tastes as she did either. This would be a piece of cake. Pun unintended.

Taking one of the samples, Autumn took a bite, feeling around the flavours in her mouth. She offered the remainder to Caterpal, who happily took it between his appendages and munched away. While he was pre-occupied, Autumn took the opportunity to look over the instructions. It seemed simple enough. Never mind all those extra steps; she knew what she was doing and things like beating the eggs separately were so unnecessary.

Her ego might have been her downfall.

Twenty minutes later, Autumn was shaking the dough from her fingers when the timer went of. Eagerly she pulled the batch from the oven. The tops looked a little crispy, even though the crust was still gooey. Frowning, she looked over at Caterpal who was eating the filling straight out of the bowl.

“Cat!” Autumn exclaimed. She crossed her arms. “You're supposed to be helping!”

      Ⅱ Autumn Vikare

After her embarrassing failure at the mooncake game, Autumn escaped to investigate the rest of the festival sights. (She had promised herself she would return later, when Cat was feeling a little more cooperative.) She rarely stopped for long, flitting from place to place, eager to see it all. Her wings had given out a while ago, and she had been forced to walk, but this made no difference to Autumn. It only meant it took a little longer to navigate through the crowds and her stockings got a little dustier.

Even as she bemoaned the thought of having muddy feet all night, she spotted an enormous pot up ahead. It almost looked like... She rushed towards it. Yes! Just like the pot they used to do laundry back at the outpost! Without a second thought, Autumn stripped the stockings off her legs and tossed them inside the boiling bath. Only after they had sunk into the water did she notice the strange colour and the various objects inside. Who cleaned carrots in the wash...?

Oh god. That wasn't laundry.

Frantic, Autumn hopped up onto a stool, grabbed the ladle sitting off to the side and began sift through the vegetables.

      ツ Lutrin Weesil

It was love at first sight.

Lutrin rushed to the fence, entranced by the magical creature she had glimpsed within. That snout, those hooves, the little tail... She had never seen anything so majestic before. Surely, this was some divine beast sent by the mirthful messiahs themselves. She needed... she needed to touch it. To clasp one graceful hoof or stroke its noble mane.

Oblivious to the fact that the gate stood less then ten yards away, Lutrin slipped between the fence sideboards and entered the pen. “Mr. Pig!!”

To be fair, the snoutbeast was a lot bigger than she was, but Lutrin didn't mind. The bigger the beast, the more beast to cuddle! Besides, he just looked so squishy. Something so sweet and squishy could never hurt her, right? Of course not. In any case, Lutrin had a special power. She was... a snoutbeast whisperer.

She had just decided that two seconds ago.

Bounding toward the adult snoutbeast, heedless of the shouts from the yellowblood behind her, Lutrin stretched her arms out. The snoutbeast turned toward her, expression wary. It stamped its hoof over the ground and let out a warning snort. Lutrin immediately skid to a stop.

“Awww! Is someone feeling a little shy?” She lowered herself to the ground, and proceeded to roll around in the mud. “Look! We can be friends, see?” Soon, she was completely covered. Wiggling her way along the ground, she crawled up right beneath the beast's snout. She flipped over. She could feel its hot breath on her face as it let out huff. She giggled, hair tickling her forehead, and reached up to touch the tip of its nose. It did not retreat.

“Friends?” she repeated, more softly.

The snoutbeast seemed to find this acceptable, or, at the very least, tolerable. Lutrin was not about to push her luck though. Rolling back onto her belly, she shuffled around around the snoutbeast, snorting and grunting all the while. It was a positively bizarre spectacle but not one without purpose. By immersing herself in snoutbeast culture, she could better understand her new companion. And by better understanding, she could become a better friend. Then nothing would stand between them. Not even mud.

Still. Lutrin kind of liked the mud.

Smearing some over her face, Lutrin sat up. The ritual was complete. Now all that was left was to see if she had performed it correctly. Face suddenly serious, she locked eyes with the snoutbeast. Throughout her display, the creature had been watching her from a distance with bored curiousity. As she suddenly became still however it trotted over, sniffing at her hair. Its snout brushed her forehead. Lutrin vibrated with excitement.

Letting out a cheer, she threw her arms around the beast's neck. “I love you too!” She buried her face into its bristly mane.

Maybe she had come on a little too strong. Mr. Pig seemed alarmed by the sudden ferocity of her hug and had begun to buck and sway. Maybe he did not like hugs...? No, that couldn't be. He was just playing. Still, she had to look out for those tusks. Mr. Pig was not aware of his own strength!

Laughing, Lutrin swung herself up onto the snoutbeast's back. She hugged his sides and rested her cheek against his neck. Until he got over his initial excitement, this would be the best method to avoid the danger without hurting his feelings.

Mr. Pig sure had a lot of energy. After hopping around for a bit, he had begun to race around the pen. A celebratory run, was it? Lutrin felt exactly the same way. She loved nothing more than to commemorate a new friend with a run. And star jumps. And balloons. And kazoos. And trail mix.

Unfortunately she had none of those things available and she doubted her companion could perform a star jump. Performing such a feat in front of him would be rude. Running on the other hand might give him the idea that she wanted to race, and while racing was good and fun, it did not make for a good bonding activity between new friends. Friends were equals and in a race there was a winner and loser. Neither of them were losers. They were both winners.

Raising her arms to the cry, Lutrin let out a elated but vaguely warlike cry. “You're free, Mr. Pig! Freeeeeee!!

After a full minute of racing around the ring Mr. Pig at last came to a stop, huffing and panting. Lutrin slid off his back with a giggle. She landed face-up in the mud and for a moment, simply lie there. She had not thought that riding could be so exhausting. Her eyes drifted to her tusked, bristly companion. No more exhausting than running though.

Arms flopping and splashing, Lutrin rolled over to him. She sat up and pulled him into a fierce hug. “You did good,” she whispered as she nuzzled him. She could feel his prickly hairs tickling her face. “Remember that no matter what anyone else tells you, you are the most talented, most amazing, most special snoutbeast in the whole universe. I promise.”

      Ⅱ Autumn Vikare

Autumn did not feel particularly inclined to go wrestling in the mud with some snoutbeast. After all, she had plenty of time to play in the muck back at the outpost. Seeking out additional opportunities would just be masochistic. This was one event she would have to bypass, thank you.

Or at least that was what she would like to say.

Snoutbeast wrestling seemed to be a staple activity of the festival, and Autumn knew that if she missed out she would come to regret it later. Thus, despite her initial apprehension, she soon found herself in the pen staring down a snoutbeast. Crossing her arms, she eyed her opponent. Thankfully, it was a lot smaller than the one she had seen the rancher advertise earlier. She had worried about her wings getting crushed, entangling with it. Now that she got a better look though, the creature looked almost... cute?

      Ⅱ Autumn Vikare

Fluttering her wings, Autumn rose several feet over the ground. She glanced over to her lusus, who as usual occupied the space to the right of her head. “Looks easy enough,” she said. “I'll go from one side, you get the other.” Blinking an affirmative, Caterpal flitted away. Watching him go, Autumn started in the opposite direction, circling towards the snoutbeast. An aerial attack would be the best way to go. Dropping down from above, the snoutbeast would not even know what hit it. She would go easy though. After all, it was so cute and tiny. Though she wanted to catch it, she did not want to hurt it.

She changed her mind a moment later after landing, when the snoutbeast bowled her over with surprising ferocity.

“Oof!” Autumn tumbled down into the mud, landing on her wings. Caaaat! she wailed. The lusus sped to her side, emitting an angry beep. Autumn sat up. She gave her wings a few experiment flaps, just to be sure. Nothing was hurt. Her lovely boa however was ruined.

“Cat,” she said.

Caterpal blinked out a question mark.

“I'm fine. Come on!” With renewed vigour, Autumn lunged towards the beast, wingbeats raising a dust devil behind her.

      Ⅱ Autumn Vikare

Working expertly with Caterpal, Autumn had pinned the snoutbeast against the fence. She had as good as captured it. Descending, she landing daintily in the mud. She folded her arms and smiled sweetly at the snoutbeast. “Be good,” she said, “and maybe I'll go easy on you.”

A flutter of movement caught her eye: her lusus. But what was he...? She noticed his blinking tail. “Early caterbug gets the nectar.” So he thought he could take all the glory for himself, did he? “Not so fast!”

      Ⅱ Autumn Vikare

Autumn lunged towards her lusus. Caterpal was quick, but she was quicker. Before he had so much as touched the snoutbeast, she snatched him right out of the air. The caterpillar let out an indignant squeak. Compressing his sides, he slipped out of Autumn's grip and sped skyward. Autumn was in hot pursuit.

“Cat!” Autumn called but to no avail. She tried again. “Cat! Caterpal! Squinting through the moonlight, she could just make out a rude response. Her wings buzzed angrily. Since when had this turned into a competition. Sometimes he could be so... so... immature!

“Caterpal, you come back down here right this instant! We were supposed to be working together on this, you know!” Folding her arms, Autumn maintained her elevation. If she chased him any further, she would only be indulging him. To maintain any control of the situation she had to make him come to her. Still, it could not hurt to give him some extra incentive. “The longer it takes to get this done, the longer it'll be before we can get fried apple dumplings and icecream.”

That made him pause. She continued, sounding thoughtful, “I hear they're selling really well... I wonder if they even have any left.”

She had hardly finished speaking when he fluttered by her side once more. She grinned. “Glad to work with you, partner.”

"There's going to be free food here." Tevini whispered to Cerpin as they approached the festival in disguise. The outfits were flimsy and cheap, the best they could secure with not much time nor a great budget with his beetles a bit tied up. Tonight Tevini had left her trademark apron at home. She'd done her best to put her hair up in a short pigtails that looked pretty stupid with her short curls. Once her hair grew longer it might be easier to style and wrap around in interesting ways that worked but not currently. She'd felt the need to change her hairstyle because that was her other main identifying feature. The pair approached a large haystack that looked perfect for hiding behind while they scoped out the place.

"Get as much free stuff as you can. Or the cheapest things they sell. We'll be living off scraps for a while." Tevini whispered. She was going to continue but the farmer troll noticed her by this point and told her to get lookin' already! Confused and nervous, Tevini played along with the game and searched for a sign explaining the objective. She hadn't realized this was a game! It said to look for a needle in the haystack. Well that was silly, she could do this easy if geared with the right tools! But did she have a magnet on her? Not in this alternate outfit! Tevini pretended to poke around but didn't waste any real effort looking and moseyed off, figuring Cerpin would follow soon.

      Ⅱ Autumn Vikare

Reunited—this time under a common goal—Autumn and Caterpal were unstoppable. They had played around long enough. It was time to show what they were really made of.

Without any words passing between them, they enacted a strategy. Autumn swept around to the left, herding the snoutbeast along the edge of the pen. Caterpal in the meantime cut around from the opposite direction, hurtling towards the snoutbeast. By himself, Autumn knew, Caterpal was not all that intimidating. He had a hidden ace up his sleeve though.

Not a second too soon, Autumn saw a glob of something transluecent and white fly through the air, splashing directly in front of the snoutbeast's path. There was a hiss and sputter as the acid sank into the earth. That was more than enough to send the snoutbeast reeling back into her arms. Hugging it tight, she bounced up and down.

“We did it, Cat! We did it! We...” She trailed off. What was that hissing sound? Caterpal's acid should have dissolved in the mud, so why... She glanced at the fence. Her eyes widened. Oops...

Releasing the snoutbeast, Autumn flapped her wings frantically at Caterpal as she turned to the farmer. She gave a polite smile. “Thanks for the game! she said. “It was a lot of fun! We should really get going though so... bye!” Then with a curtsy and a wave, she was off.

The further she and Caterpal were when the farmer realised her lusus had burnt a hole in his fence the better.
