Drat! Still not enough. She couldn't go home without finishing that quest. Hemlocke looked around to see if there was anything else nearby, and saw that she was near the spiders' cave once more. "Fine. Let's get this done, then." The girl walked toward the nearest spider and, throwing subtlety out the window, clenched her fist around a ball of light the size of a sparrow's egg. Drawing her hand back, she whipped the energy forward and watched it streak toward the unsuspecting arachnid. If she couldn't play things safe, then she'd just have to do things the hard way. She'd gotten a fairly good haul from the first spider she'd fought, so she was cautiously optimistic about this one. All she had to do was get a few more motes of light. Just a couple, and she'd be done. How hard could that be?

Ha! The spider was caught entirely flat-footed... Flat... Leg-point... ed? It took the hit on its abdomen, and fell over to one side. Not exactly the incredible force that Hemlocke wished to eventually control, but it was enough to kill her target, which was astonishing in itself. A single shot had felled the spider, and Hemlocke had escaped the battle unscathed. She fetched the talisman from her belt and hoped to get a few usable motes of light out of this. Her luck had to turn around eventually, right? Bah! Either way, she was practicing her Craft. She needed to get her mind out of this objective-driven rut. She was doing this for the sake of bettering her magic, and she was doing that. Whether she got swag from it or not should be unrelated to her satisfaction with that.

She checked her journal. She had finished it! huzzah! She accepted her previous determination that rewards were not the only purpose for her work. But that didn't mean she couldn't enjoy the hell out of them! Dropping the talisman back to her belt, she started running for the encampment.

((crafting a blue lucent stone with 44 blue motes of light

materials:
1x uncharged lucent stone
44x blue motes of light

Lightsmith Arte: monochrome lucent stone
Using an uncharged lucent stone and any number of motes of light of the same color, one can create a lucent stone with the power of that color at a level 1 lightforge. ))

Name: Hemlocke
Level: 2
HP: 40

Hemlocke surveyed her new talisman and red lucent stone and was immediately enraptured by her new abilities. She wanted to try them out, but first she wanted to experiment with her new crafting ability. She had forty-four motes of light in blue, from the giant rabbit that she'd been in the vicinity of the taming of. She wanted to know what blue light was capable of. If she was going to be helping that girl, she would have to make herself useful: what better way than to align their methods of battle? At the very least, she could do some good with that red stone. But, taunted by the limitless potential of an unanswered question just out of her grasp, Hemlocke was drawn inexorably to the lightforge on the Lightcaster's table. She purchased a new lucent stone blank and placed it into the forge, pulling the sixteen blue motes of light out of her current talisman and feeding them through the apparatus, imbuing the blank with the power of Friendship. Her purple eyes twinkled, reflecting the trickling blue stream of light that flowed through the many lenses and prisms of the lightforge. She couldn't wait to know what a blue lucent stone could do.

But something was going wrong. The light was ricocheting inside the lightforge mroe than it was supposed to. She'd messed up. Backing away, Hemlocke watched in no small amount of intrigued fear as the lightforge became a shining ball of blue light. Just when the girl thought that it was going to explode, the beam of light found its mark, and the lucent stone began to radiate blinding light. This went on for a few seconds before the stone gained a handle on the power that was being fed into it. As the resplendent emanation died down to leave a brilliant blue stone, Hemlocke dared to approach the forge once more. Gently, as if afraid that it still might explode, the girl lifted the stone from its place in the forge. This stone was different from the previous one: it was faceted, instead of being smooth, and it shimmered with an inner light that it seemed to refract from the ambient light.

It was the most beautiful gem Hemlocke had ever seen. So blue that it threatened to become a new color entirely. She became lost in its intensity until she idly realized that she was only seeing its appearance. What power was contained within this remarkable crystal!?

((quest: that's not a knife

forging a skinning knife))

Name: Hemlocke
Level: 3
HP: 60
AP: 3

Hemlocke set the unbelievable gemstone into her talisman, and set about finishing a quest that she'd stupidly forgotten about: she moved over to the weaponsmith, who she had forgotten to visit in her haste to become a powerful mage. She listened to the quest, and went through the process of creating a new skinning knife. This would have come in handy not too long ago. No matter. She was more than capable of defeating rabbits if she really needed the materials later. Of course, if they continued to rapidly grow out of control at this frequency, she was going to have to be a bit more careful than most people. There. She put the finishing touches on the skinning knife and slipped it into the back of her belt, ready to face the world once more.

Hemlocke wandered back to the gloomwood cavern, and saw the field of spiders. She decided that she really wanted to see her nukes in action. She knew in theory how they were supposed to work, but she hadn't had an excuse to use them yet. She needed to pull a couple of them, in order to make sure that she'd have enough time to gather a full stock of energy. She attracted the attention of the nearest two spiders and opened her journal, beginning to focus on the item and deciding to generate her energy aggressively. Charging a bolt of light into her free hand, the shyft threw a small marble of light like she was skipping a stone, sending it whipping toward one of the spiders, drawing a brilliant streak through the murky air of the gloomwood.

As the ball of light struck the spider, it played out a scene not unlike the crashing of a meteorite: the light collided with the spider's carapace and several red splinters of light were flaked off, remaining floating in air and littering the atmosphere of the battle with glitter. As Hemlocke dodged her assailants, she flashed power to her hand and used the light to assist in her self-preservation. As the spiders glanced off of the energy, they splintered blue light with also remained in the air. There were dozens of red and blue sparkles riding the wind, drifting about the battlefield. Blue outnumbered the red three to one, but it was still enough to use for her first ability. She opted for the lightcasting of her red stone, and was busy refreshing herself on the tutorial for the technique, rather than just allowing the system assist to walk her through it. She was getting good at multi-tasking; reading and fighting all at once.

Feeling that she understood the idea of the arte, Hemlocke prepared. She smiled and held her journal out in front of her, the talisman glowing as the girl prepared. The journal remained floating in the air in front of her, the pages fluttering in an invisible wind. The shyft's hands opened and she placed her right hand above her head, her left down by her waist. She drew a smooth circle in the air, small tails of light following her fingers as her right hand drew half of the shape and her left drew the other. As she drew the circle, the red specks of light were drawn into the design, coloring the trails of light crimson. Once she completed the circle, and her left hand was above while her right was below, Hemlocke drew them together vertically, the borders of the circle withdrawing as it became more and more condensed. Soon, it was a solid ball of light, flickering and sparking between her palms. Her journal's pages, as well as Hemlocke's clothes and hair fluttered madly as the shyft thrust her hands forward, palms out. The energy raced forward, the size of a baseball, toward the unharmed spider. Compared to her normal attacks, this thing was massive. She felt a surge of power as the energy left her body, and the battlefield was left littered with blue light. "Oh, hell yes. I can get used to that."

The spider was struck and obliterated by the ball of energy, the spell hitting less like an explosion and more like a point-blank shotgun blast, sending a large chunk of the creature spraying into a fine particulated mist which transformed into a cloud of red motes of light. She had to make a decision now as to whether she wanted to tame the first spider or if she wanted to kill it. It was a tough decision, frankly. On the one hand, there was no particular advantage to killing it, save the mastery that she would gain in auracasting for using her Sapphire to buff herself instead of attacking with it. On the other hand, she could tame the creature and gain lightcasting experience along with blue motes of light, and a heart that she could give to Anna-Mia, since she wouldn't be beastmastering any time soon. Of course, she was practically swimming in blue motes of light, and Anna-Mia was most likely swimming in hearts at this point, with all the hunting that they'd done. She decided that she would tame radiant mobs, and kill regular mobs. She'd gain more experience in auracasting that way, and she'd be able to get better quality hearts for Anna-Mia at the same time. Not to mention that her Sapphire was way more powerful than her red stone, making it easier to tame powerful mobs with it. Maybe. If she didn't get the tame with a single shot, she'd have to wind all the way back up to get the job done. That might be incentive to make a weaker blue stone, just so that she'd have a rapid-fire option for taming.

As it stood, she decided to try auracasting, and spread her hands, palms up, at her waist, as if beckoning a bro to come at her. Her journal floating before her, the myriad blue particles rushing towards her, charging her body with light, leaving her wreathed in a soft sapphire light. She felt the energy of the stone filling her and felt positively giddy. The power lent her a sort of quiet surety in herself, stilling her hand and causing her to move with determination and confidence.

Hemlocke's skin glimmered with blue light, and she held out a palm to face the spider, trickles of light spiraling down her arm, wrapping around her wrist and pooling in her outstretched hand to form a small, dense orb of energy. With an internal burst of focus, Hemlocke shot the ball from her palm, sending it streaking toward the remaining spider and hopefully ending this fight. As much as she loved exercising her power, she wanted to keep it in controlled bursts, if at all possible. Small skirmishes rather than protracted battles. She wasn't sure how she'd hold up in extended combat, due to the largely unfamiliar territory that she was exploring with this power.

The blast struck the spider and blasted a massive chunk out of its face, even blowing off a couple legs. The poor thing was blown back and its half-corpse tumbled for a bit before it fell still and shattered, spreading red motes of light through the clearing. Hemlocke smiled and pumped her fist. "Oh, yeah. I can totally get used to this." Hemlocke made to absorb the motes of light and tally up her earnings. First on her list was to create a new red stone. She wanted to have a more powerful nuke, just for the sake of having a super damage nuke. Nukes were simply too much fun not to have a rainbow assortment of.

Well, that had been fun. Now it was time for something really exciting. Hemlocke had no way of knowing how effective her skills were in a protracted fight, so she needed experience in protracted fights. The shyft walked into the field of spiders, and called four of them to her. This was going to get good. She opened the fight with her journal in the air, gathering the red glitterlights that were still in the air from her last fight. With pressing her palms forward, thumb to thumb and finger to finger, she blasted a wave of red energy toward the spider that was leading the charge. She could really use some more stones, so that she could have a varying wave of attacks ready, juggling between the charges of each, but she just didn't have the materials. That's what all of this was about, after all: she needed to gather motes of light in order to make new lucent stones, in order to wreck bigger monsters. Sustained damage would come at the cost of spike damage, but, depending on the situation, that would be worth it. For a protracted fight against many smaller enemies, sustained light attacks would be enough. For massive enemies with huge health bars, those mega-nukes would be incredibly useful, and she would actually have time to charge them.

She would just have to play with the cards that she'd been dealt for now.

Anna-Mia had waited quite a while for Hemlocke to come around. She had long since double checked her directions and taken Glitz (her Deer) back to Rota and Alyx's home. They apparently had pens now, so it made that process all the more better. However, after inspecting her materials, she found that she wouldn't have enough Hearts to fully power her pets according to appraisals from the in town beastmaster. This meant she needed to get more. After a long period of consideration, she decided that Bears would be her best bet for taking on something alone while Hemlocke was doing her own thing. Besides, she knew Bears to be able to both take and dish out a lot of punishment. If there was any creature that would help Glitz and Glimmer out most, it was Bears. She walked out into the forest, on the hunt for one to come into view with Glimmer in tow. It was a while before she found one, but when she did, Anna-Mia's eyes welled up a little bit. The poor creature was sickly, with fur sloughing off in ragged patches. it looked malnourished, crazed, and rabid. She hoped that by taming the beast, the properties of this world's taming methods would cure its sickness. She looked to Glimmer and knelt down by her. "Okay Glimmer. This is our first real test. What I need you to do is protect me as much as possible here. I'll try and end this as fast as I can, but just in case, I need your help. Okay?"

The bunny's golden eyes hardened and nodded in confirmation and her master rose and called to her quarry. The bear spun around and looked at Anna-Mia wildly. The young girl gulped, but stood firm. She had tamed far bigger and stronger creatures in her home forest. This bear was not going to get the best of her. She tossed her bait as the bear came charging at its would-be tamer.

Anna-Mia watched as Glimmer stood between her master and the Bear and shimmering antlers grew from beneath the flaxen hair of the rabbit's head. She charged forward to take a bullet for Anna-Mia when the young beast master learned far too lat that the Bear was seeking the bunny, not the human. The bear swung a mighty claw as it took a piece of bait in the face, batting away the shimmering nuisance in front of it. Glimmer hit the ground hard, light blasting onto the ground in a shockwave, but she landed right side up and ready for more. Anna-Mia was still nervous, but the hardened look of determination in her companion's eye gave her strength as she cocked back another piece of bait and launched it at her quarry.

Anna-Mia had successfully thrown another piece of bait at the suffering furry tank. However, it was still not too happy with the idea of being tamed. It shifted gears from attacking her guardian directly, and moved to attack the pink monkey hucking candied treats at their head. Glimmer noticed that her master was in peril, and moved her tiny golden body like a flash of golden lightning. She jumped at the descending claw of the Bear, but misjudged and got slapped down to the ground again for her trouble. Anna-Mia stood limber as she tried to not let Glimmer's efforts be in vain as she tried to get out of the way of the Bear's claws. She just wasn't fast enough yet. The Bear's fetid claws dug through the meat of the Bestial Pitcher's left arm, but she didn't shriek in pain. Oh, she winced and stifled a gasp, but she maintained her composure. This was not the first time a beast had tried to harm her while she was making friends with them, and it absolutely would not be the last. She had tamed a MANTICORE, she could do this.

She rolled her left shoulder and looked towards her meteoric bunny that was back on all fours ready to serve her master. "That's my girl. We can help eachother heal later. I'm fine for now. I KNOW you can do this." Glimmer's gaze steeled as she stared down a creature that made her kind its dinner on a regular basis. This time it was the predator that was the prey. Anna-Mia wound up her arm and watched whatever movements the Bear would care to make.

Hemlocke's first attack of this experiment hadn't gotten her a kill yet, but it had made a good amount of progress toward the first kill of this fight, and she counted it as a win. The four spiders had rushed her, the one in the lead taking a rather substantial hit that rendered him mostly stunned, allowing Locke to basically ignore his feeble attempt to strike. The three others all attempted to rush her, making use of their superior numbers in an effort to overwhelm the girl. The worst part is that it worked. While focused on dodging the second and fourth spiders, the third one sank its fangs into Hemlocke's left calf. Letting out a cry, Hemlocke slashed her hand out at the assailant, using her magick to blast herself back a short distance and allow her time to deal with the burning pain that throbbed in her leg and the toxin that coursed through her veins. Her delicate form drifted lightly on the air as she fell back from the combat, the spiders giving chase with their usual single-minded tenacity.

Anna-Mia threw the bait as Glimmer's head sprang alight once more. The antlers were far more grand than they were last time, more dense and vibrant. The bait made its mark, which seemed to slow the strike that was meant for the Beastmaster once again. This was all Glimmer needed. As the claw was coming down on Anna-Mia, Glimmer ran up to her master and leapt forward, catching herself on Anna's stomach, and rebounded upto the paw with antlers out. The Gilded Bunny caught the paw in her resplendant antlers and pulled with all her might to shift the momentum of the attack. This caught the bear so off guard that it actually pulled the hundereds of pounds of muscle and fur down to the ground onto its side. The bunny then returned to her master to stand vigilant.

Anna-Mia noticed that the taming was having some degree of effect on the Bear. Its once hardened and mournful gaze was softening ever so slightly, and this last attack had proven that it was getting progressively less and less fond of harming either of them. She was sure that this wasn't nearly over with just yet, but she could at least take solace in that regard. She pulled back another pitch and waited to see what would happen.
