Why aspire beyond the rank you're given? (It tries to wrench his weapon off, and he feels his shoulder nearly pop out of its socket.) Why not be proud of the work you're capable of? Not everyone can.

Some fight and some defend. These are the options now, not escape. He bonded to a shield because it suited him: large, stalwart, able to withstand anything to protect others.

He dislodged the shield with a wrench and knocked the hungry jaws away with a kick.

The lion lunged, and he didn't need to think. Raising his shield, Dawson plunged his weapon down like an axe and drove straight through its back just as its claws began to pierce his barrier. The weight still knocked him down, but at least the lion went down with him. Boss HP: bye Damage: 9 o ok Dawson HP: 5 Charge: 2/3 Stamina: 11

Maebe hissed out a proud yessss when Dawson and the lion came down in one glorious puff of destruction, and pieced through the fallout to get to him. When she did, her little body flopped hard, giving him a genuine, no strings attached hug. It wasn't to reward him for the kill, or to make him feel better. It was a test; a search. If pain wasn't pleasure anymore, she tried to find other things that were.
The hug was just a hug, and as good as it was to hug someone, it did not solve the mystery any further.
"I am covered in so much white, you'd think I was a virgin." She coughed out, dragging him down to the lake arm in arm. It was difficult to keep her eyes open, but her legs hadn't given up on her yet.
The vines and sludge found new and inventive ways to test her strength, and by the end of her third failed attempt, she sat down and let out a giant, toothy yawn.

Slam, went her body, when she finally got the will to stand up and try again. She was bashed against the shores twice, and wanted nothing more than to stay where she'd been dropped. One more time, she promised herself. Just try once more. She got up and almost fell into the water face-first. The dark shadows that greeted her were the only thing that kept her from falling in, and she struggled to scoot back onto the shore, pulling her legs in before the tendrils of black could touch her. "Hey, Dawson?" She called out, slowly lying down on the ground. "I think I have to stop, and just.. you go on, I'll uh.." She couldn't finish her sentence, because she'd already fallen asleep. Stamina: 1 maebe baby is done

The hug wasn't for him, but it still felt just as good in his ignorance. Anytime Maebe did something affectionate, it was Good. There were times he wished he could do more--he had sensed something was off ever since the bloody knuckle incident--but Dawson was quickly learning that his capability's boundaries were hard lines. He could offer band-aids, but they couldn't fix everything.
Content to let Maebe sleep (tempted himself to join her, to just lie down and give up), he said, "Do yer thing, hun. I'll be right back," and waded on through.

He didn't get far on his own; he hadn't expected to. The stag waited for him right at the beginning, sharp ivory horns at the ready. He'd stared deer in the eyes before while hunting; the lack of life in this one's gave him chills.
He backed off before it could initiate a charge and lumbered back through the pool unchallenged. Carefully he picked Maebe up from the ground so that she didn't wake up and carried her back beyond the temple entrance. It was the most peaceful he'd ever seen her, and he took a mental photograph while he still could.

Dawson made the whiniest noise in the world when he saw the lion prowling again. Not even a nice nap was enough to tide him over. "Jesus, why don' they just quit?"

"Because they got a taste of me," She informed Dawson with a grin, summoning her weapon with renewed energy. "And now they can't quit."
At least somebody couldn't. She was starting to like the lions more and more.

Maebe was taunting it towards her with her trident, using it like a cat toy, dangled near it's face. It worked, catching the lion's attention enough to make it pounce her and attempt to grab it with its paws. She pulled away and tried to stab the moment it came close, but giant lions are way faster than she was, and Maebe only managed to stab empty air, and fall flat on her face.
The lion stamped on her trident, as if to say I caughted it.

He didn't know what to make of that comment, other than add it to his little pile of things to probably talk to Maebe about. It was a problem when he could no longer tell what comments were jokes.
Dawson promptly smashed his shield down on the paw and scraped up its leg. "Bad cat! C'mon now." He regretted it when the lion roared right in his face, leaving his ears ringing as it left Maebe's weapon alone and attacked.

With her trident freed, Maebe scrambled back up to her feet and continued to run, using the momentum to parkour up the damn thing's leg and land sitting on it's back. It was still roaring at Dawson when she stood, using all the force that the huntress in her allowed to ram her trident balls deep into lion's back. The roar did not stop, it simply lifted upward and turned into a howl of distress. She didn't stop either, pulling the trident to carve three long, jagged rips all down the back of it.

She was whipped in every direction as the lion attempted to buck her off, and all she could hold on to was the very edge of her trident's shaft. When it stilled to try and find her with it's claws, she scrambled back onto her feet and dug the trident back into it's neck, burying it deep in a new section.
When she got home, she was going to buy herself a little ceramic lion, behead it, and keep the body as a trophy.

She screamed this time, but it was a much more triumphant sound, as she caught another dig into the other side of it's neck, and she heard the telltale cracking of its head beginning to pull away from it's body. Oh, it was so mad at her. So mad.
