"No need to be embarrassed," Eron assured Andarien, "I'm just asking as another teacher. After all, we teachers aren't mind readers, it's always hard to predict how a student would react or even... interpret our actions. We may think what we do is perfectly logical, when to the student it might not be at all."

Though it did tell Eron that Andarien had a hard time reading his own emotions (not a surprise), but more importantly he didn't have the social skills to know when to question what went on around him. Again, this really didn't surprise Eron at all. Eron wasn't a social worker, or a therapist, but if Andarien had been his student, he would have contacted the parents and recommended an assessment.

Andarien wasn't sure he understood what Eron was telling him, but then he wasn't used to the type of teacher/student relationship that Eron had in a classroom. He had never seen a class like that, and didn't know about them.

"I guess I just ... I just do what he says," he murmured, his blush growing brighter. He averted his eyes. "Ada says I should because Kaito's my teacher and he knows what he's doing."

"You should, I mean listen to your teacher, but also don't be afraid to question your teacher. Questioning helps your understanding far more than just doing what you're told, it means to learn how to fully understand what you're being taught," Eron explained.

He didn't mind if his students had questions as long as they weren't the stupid ones, but he was pretty sure that Andarien wasn't one of those students.

"Sometimes when we are experts in our field, we forget that not everyone thinks the way we do."

That was one of the hardest lessons Eron had to learn as a teacher, was to learn how to bring it down to someone else's level. He would like to think he succeeded most of the time, but he still had lots to learn.

Andarien frowned, but he wasn't frowning at Eron. He was frowning at himself.

"I do ask questions," he muttered to himself. "I ask Shiro and I ask Miyuki and I ask Nana and Ada ... and sometimes I ask Kyrie and when we were in Caras Galadhon I asked Corazin ..."

He turned back to Eron, his brow furrowed. "How come I never thought to ask Kaito questions before?"

"Hmm... that's a good question," Eron was thoughtful, "Is there something different about Kaito being your teacher compared to other teachers you've had?"

Then again, Eron didn't know if Andarien ever had other teachers other than Kaito.

"Yeah," Andarien muttered. "The others teach me things that are interesting and I'm good at and Kaito teaches me things that no matter how hard I try I can't get good at them and I don't like them."

His attitude towards weapons hadn't changed much since he had been small; he only accepted that he had to learn them now because of what his father had gone through.

It was like a light bulb went off in Eron's head. This was more in the range of things he knew. A student who only did as much as they needed to and nothing more. In a normal school system, this was do-able, but the best students were the ones that went above and beyond.

"Do you not like it because you're not good at it, or because it is hard?" the teacher asked out of curiousity.

Sometimes not being good at something was a large deterrent, so you had to acknowledge when they did well, even if it was a small improvement.

Andarien didn't know how to answer that, and he didn't like it. When he thought back, he couldn't explain why he didn't like it. He knew he hadn't had any good experiences with his training, and he recalled failure after failure in a large number of activities.

Languages.

Chopsticks.

Physical training.

Katas.

Slingshot.

Bow.

And pretty much everything else his parents wanted him to learn.

But why didn't he like it? Was it because he wasn't good at it? Or was it because it was hard? Or was it because of some other reason, something he couldn't think of now that he was suddenly under pressure to think of it?

He knew he hated disappointing his parents. He hated the look on their faces when he tried something and couldn't do it, no matter what. The disappointment. The frustration. The confusion.

The pity.

He shrugged. "Dunno," he muttered. "All I know is it doesn't matter how hard I try, I can't do it. Never have been able to. Probably never will. Still." He set his jaw determinedly. "I have to learn to do something. Next time Ada gets arrested ..." He shook his head.

Eron had to give Andarien credit, he did think long and hard on it. It wasn't surprising, he was asking Andarien to explain how he was feeling, which he had suspected would be difficult.

"Fair enough, that is a very good reason to want to keep learning," Eron paused and then added Andarien, "I hope you don't mind all my questions."

Andarien shrugged. "It's only fair, I guess," he murmured. "I ask you lots of questions, too."

Not that he would distinguish between the types of questions being asked, or the reasons for them.

Still, he was only being polite. The questions had brought back some not-so-pleasant memories, and he didn't want to talk about it anymore.

"I'm going to rest for a bit," he said, trying to smile but not quite succeeding. Without another word, he headed into their tent and ended the conversation.

Eron watched as Andarien headed into the tent and looked very thoughtful. Maybe he should rethink his position on Andarien not asking questions because he wasn't interested in the subject. It just seemed like Andarien couldn't make the leaps of logic that would make him question why Eron was even asking those sorts of questions.

It was also clear that he wasn't quite happy with the questions, but he didn't seem to know enough to tell Eron that he didn't like the questions.

"Then again," Eron murmured to himself, "They do say that most of our social skills are picked up by observation. Unspoken lessons indeed, I wish I had read that book now."

He had heard of it, a mother he once talked to swore that book helped her understand her son on so many levels. However, it was never necessary for him to read the book himself because he never dealt with children that was even remotely like Andarien.

"I should fix that when I get back," Eron murmured, "What if I'm like Kaito and teaching the wrong way without even realizing it."

Speaking of which, since he wasn't tired, he made a beeline for the neko's tent. He wanted to see exactly what Kaito had in mind for Andarien, because he was pretty certain the boy was supposed to ask for something.

Shiro and Kaito were both in their tent. Shiro was sitting at a desk with a lab set on it and peering at something through a microscope, his tablet on the table next to him. Kaito was lying on a pile of pillows, tossing a baseball up in the air and catching it again, clearly bored.

When Eron entered the tent, Shiro murmured a distracted, "Hi there," and Kaito looked over and grinned.

"Yo!" he called, tossing the ball in Eron's direction. "Catch!"

"Gah!" Eron fumbled with the ball before matching to grab a hold of it.

At least he didn't drop it, or worse yet, it didn't hit him in the face.

"You're bored?" he asked Kaito.

Sometimes, Eron thought, Kaito and Andarien were two of a kind, even if they were very different people.

Kaito grinned and shrugged one shoulder, and he held up one hand for the ball again.

"Yeah. Usually am." He yawned. "I'm here for the sake of traveling. No other work for me to do."

Aside from teaching Andarien of course, but that was incidental and very part time.

"Besides training Andarien," Eron ventured as he carefully tossed the ball back using an under throw.

The kind of throw you'd use with a toddler, but Eron wasn't a sports person outside of running.
