Illo v.s. Carmen Laurell

Carmen Laurell Difficulty: Hard

User Image

"Oh pooh, it's not cheating at all!" Carmen replied with a grin as they sparred back and forth. "Don't be jealous!" As their attacks increased streams of fiery green energy began exploding around her attacks like fireworks as she attempted to both blind Illo and add extra damage to her attacks at the same time. Carmen's attacks were faster and linked together almost perfectly. She was a master at creating and maintaining continuous combos in perfect synch. In requesting close-range combat, Illo had played to Carmen's strength and it showed her more and more complex chained attacks as her relentless assault continued.

Abilities used:

+Empathy Link: By focusing her wavelength, Carmen can resonate with her opponent, transferring a third of the damage she receives to them. This works much better on stronger opponents who do more damage. This ability requires a lot of concentration and sufficient damage/pain/mental attacks can break the resonance link, freeing the enemy from its effects.

+Fireburst: Carmen waves her arm in any direction, causing a stream of fiery green energy that explodes like fireworks to trail after it. This can be projected towards the enemy or used as a small shield to block attacks.

Hard - These opponents are very experienced and talented fighters. They are somewhere between graduate level and Death Scythe level in strength. Unless you are a Death Scythe or otherwise extremely strong, your chances of winning one-on-one are possible, but slim. You should strongly consider bringing a partner/ally to this fight.

[[Sure it is! And what do you mean illusory lead?]]

Thanks! And the illusory lead is a little something I've made by adapting Bruce Lee's "Elusive Lead" to Illo's abilities. It's one of the pinnacles of my own martial arts theory, and I was just wondering if I could test it out here.

I don't know how much theory you have in martial arts, so I didn't want to insult you by just blabbering on about it. sweatdrop

Jealous? No, not quite. The monk was still able to block and otherwise deflect Carmen's advances, but the green fire made a huge difference in that. He knew he had to stop her quickly lest he be fried crispy.

So he found an opening in the blasts and dashed through. He took a punch to the side of the face for that, but it was worth it as he was able to parry he next blow and end up behind her. Illo would then start throwing kicks high and low with his left foot in an attempt to shift momentum back to him.

I've got plenty of tricks of my own!

Illo v.s. Carmen Laurell

Carmen Laurell Difficulty: Hard

User Image

Carmen felt the kicks hit her in the back and in the back of her head. She shot forward using her streamer ability to move out of range of the rest of the kicks before spinning to face Illo. She sent one of her Firebursts towards him before approaching again. She stayed out of arms (and legs) length this time as she slowly circled around Illo. "You're gonna need 'em!" She said in a sing-song voice as she continued to circle.

Sabrewolf123
No, I don't think it is. It'll just add to what I'm trying to do with Illo as a character. Ok, just to be sure, the Empathy Link makes Illo feel 1/3 empathy of damage he causes, right? So, the kicks hurt Illo's head and back and not his foot, right?

what happened:

User Image
Illo

Between the empathy and Carmen's fire burst, Illo had paused his little assault momentarily as Carmen circled around him. Most of the fire careened off Illo's soul wavelength, creating an aurora effect of rich blues and greens and oranges. He dropped his guard completely, or so it seemed, and waited for Carmen to make a move.

So, are you done with the warm up?

Illo asked closing his eyes and sitting down in lotus.

You are one who attacks with the soul as well as the body. In that regard we are not so different. However, there is a difference in our technique that cannot be denied. I wonder which will prevail.

A curious feeling was in the air, a distortion of sorts, as Illo began humming an Ohm. He was leveling out his power in this stage of Phoenix Mode to better use his energy output, mainly to better block Carmen's fire, which had been dealing the most damage to the monk.

Illo v.s. Carmen Laurell

Carmen Laurell Difficulty: Hard

Carmen watched carefully as Illo got in a lotus position and began to hum. What is he doing? she wondered as she felt the change in the air. He was causing some kind of distortion but Carmen realized that Illo wouldn't make himself this vulnerable unless it was some kind of trap. She wasn't about to attack head on. "I am if you are!" She said warily as she watched him. She kept herself out of range and gave herself plenty of maneuvering distance. His abilities were very foreign to her and Carmen wasn't sure what the monk was capable of. Regardless, she was ready for anything.

Abilities used:

+Empathy Link: By focusing her wavelength, Carmen can resonate with her opponent, transferring a third of the damage she receives to them. Illo

Carmen seemed like she could handle herself pretty well, and Illo had gotten a lot better at managing his out of control soul wavelength, so the monk thought it would be ok to venture out beyond his set boundary. A moment or two of Illo's meditation, courtesy of Carmen's defensive strategy, and Illo was ready to begin the real fight.

The air was full of the most haunting harmonics as Illo's humming and chanting echoed and bounced all over the arena, the changing pitches colliding like the birth of planets. Eventually, he got up, rather tentatively at first, but coming to a strong looking stance regardless.

Then you are giving me the first turn? You must be aware of the old saying; "ye who strikes first, loses." That puts me at quite a disadvantage... Good, it's been too long since I've been able to test the results of my training. Here I come!

Illo bolted toward Carmen in the crest of a giant wave of telekinetic energy. His power increases in this state on an exponential curve, not a linear one, so he wasn't just a little stronger but instead would be like a completely different person.

He went in a few punches, making sure to keep his focus on Carmen's midsection so as not to feel the empathy in his face. Then he would shoot up above Carmen's head and appear to be coming down with a tremendous kick. At the last instant, he would pull his foot in so the kick would miss, landing the monk near Carmen's left foot. Illo would then drive a hard elbow straight at the side of her knee. The meditation wasn't so much to bring out his power as it was a chance for Illo charge his chi around his joint to protect himself for the empathy link.

He had time to think, and eventually had put the pieces together; whatever spot he hit on her, he'd feel a similar pain in the same area.
The thing that couldn't be accounted for was the nature in which Illo had been trained: to stand in horse stance for days on end while men of equal strength and technique beat you mercilessly, to learn to harden even the most vulnerable parts of the body through the practice of Chi Kung to eliminate all areas of the body as liabilities in battle is exactly what it meant to train as a Phoenix.

Illo v.s. Carmen Laurell

Carmen Laurell Difficulty: Hard

User Image

She watched as his strength continued to increase. Maybe she should have launched an attack? Oh well, it seemed to be too late now. "What?? That doesn't make any sense!" She replied to Illo's first statement. Carmen increased her resonance force as well, countering his punches with her fireburst attacks as she met each one. Carmen was also ready for his downwards kick, but she wasn't ready for it to suddenly turn into something else. His attack slammed into her joint sending her spiraling downwards to the ground. She barely managed to land on her feet, falling to one knee. "Ow ow owwww!" She yelled, grabbing her knee. "Ow! You dislocated it!" She quickly reached down and took her knee between her hands. She quickly jerked her knee to the side and there was a loud pop as she moved the joint back into place. She stood up immediately afterwards and looked up at Illo. "Don't think you're just gonna get away with that!" She told him. She shot upwards immediately, getting into close range once again. Immediately she began a physical assault, but this one was different. Unbeknownst to Illo, she was using one of her special and strongest abilities to begin a deadly combo.

+Daisy Chain: By focusing her power into several moments in time, Carmen can begin a combo on a target once she lands a hit. The first hit has a 65% chance to land. From there the chance each hit has to land goes up by 5%. For example, the next hit would have a 70% chance of landing, followed by 75% with the next and 80% with the next. The highest this ability can raise her chances of hitting is 95%.

In addition, each hit landed will increase the damage caused by each hit by 10%. Her first hit starts at 100% of normal damage. The second would be 110%, the third 120% and so on. This ability maxes out at 200%, double her normal damage with each hit onwards.

This isn't a passive ability so Carmen has to activate it before an attack rather than any normal attack starting the chain. A miss or a pause in the attack that lasts more than several seconds resets the combo and Carmen has to start over next time she uses it. Blocking the attack or using an ability such as a shield to block the attack do not reset it. This ability has a cool-down of one post. (She can use it again the post after next)

This ability gives Carmen a strong advantage against larger, heavier opponents who aren't fast enough to dodge an agile opponent such as herself. Opponents who would rather block and would normally be able to soak up many of Carmen's hits would find themselves being worn down as each attack became stronger and more accurate than the last until each hit was doing double damage.

It is a curious sensation to have a power that is constantly increasing with what seems to be a mind of its own. Illo had almost forgotten that feeling. He grinned and watched Carmen pull herself back together. But there was another feeling he was experiencing, a thrill that could only from a battle with a worthy opponent. His excitement ran out of control and upped his powers all the more quickly.

Then he saw Carmen coming at him again. She looked quite determined, but if there was anything one shouldn't do is try to rush the Iron Phoenix. It wasn't that he knew what she was up to, it was just that Illo wanted to maintain control over the fight, and having Carmen rushing into Wing Chun range was absolutely perfect for him. He would waste no time in neutralizing her attack.
The first punch that came at him, Illo would wrap up with lightning speed.

I'm going to assume you've never fought anyone trained in Wing Chun either... Ah-ah! He would say if Carmen tried to free herself by force.

You'll break your arm trying to get out. He would then let her go and teleport a few meters back, motioning the universal "come get some" with his left hand, which was the side he was leading with at the moment.

Again! Carmen must think Illo to be insane, egging her on to try again at demolishing him!

There was a slight shaking of the ground as a large figure walked onto a nearby field. Its tail swayed slightly as it walked, the arena lights flashing off the wicked looking double metal sickles protruding from the end. "Alright! Another fight!" The creature said as it stopped on its side of the arena. "Wonder who it's gonna be this time?" He sat down like a dog as he waited for his opponent to arrive though its tail continued to swish back and forth in anticipation.

This was her first exhibition match. With no partner, she had studied the ranks. Yet couldn't bare herself to start any lower. With fear in her soul she had decided to decimate it by facing a greater foe.

Carmen Laurell Difficulty: Hard

Carmen frowned as Illo grabbed her arm but didn't try and break free. She didn't know what kind of ability he was using but she didn't think it was worth it to risk it at the moment. As Illo teleported behind her, Carmen spun. "Okay!" She replied before coming at him again. She opened up with her streamer ability, coming at him much faster than usual. At the last second she cut the Streamer and used her resonance force like an air brake, shooting past him and sliding to a stop as she turned to face him. Before he could turn around she was already at him again, attempting to begin her Daisy Chain with several attacks wreathed in her fireburst abilities.

Fooey yelled, jumping up quickly and lowering his head and turning to the side slightly so that one of his two sharp horns collided with the blade causing a loud clang of metal and a shower of sparks. "Geez, nice to meet you too!" Fooey replied. As soon as he had repelled her attack Fooey took one huge step and thrust his head forward, attempting to gore Alexandra straight through the torso. It was a heavy attack to start off a battle, but despite his personality Fooey was not one to go easy on anyone.

Illo

Illo's soul had taken another leap forward in the time Carmen had come around to attack him. The monk had been lucky so far not to have a visit from the Demons, but as he knew all too well luck can be very fickle.

The green fire lapped at the mystic's skin through a dazzling series of reactions with his soul wavelength, and Illo grinned, knowing just what to do. Since his opponent was coming from behind, he intended to use the famed Hakuta punch in conjunction with his turning momentum and Carmen's charging momentum to deal a devistating or even match-ending blow. Unfortunately, Illo was interrupted.

It's been a long time, pious one.
A voice could be heard in Illo's head alone. The shame of it was that Illo thought he was delivering the punch. What was really happening was Illo getting the beating of a lifetime courtesy of a cute blonde.

You intend to fight an opponent like this without your full strength? Even now, after releasing your seal, you are struggling to hold back

What's so wrong with destruction anyway? You're being destroyed right now! Kill to move, young monk, you know that is the truth. That is the only way to live!

At this point Illo had tumbled to the ground, the flames luckily being put out by the rolling, and was picking himself back up slowly.

No! ... Please, just a little longer. Illo's voice could be heard echoing all around the arena in a curious way. The fans who hadn't fled by now were turning their heads in confusion trying to follow it. Illo was facing away from Carmen now and completely open for an attack.

Apparently her classmates had forgotten to add he was a sentient being? By the time she realized all this, they were now face to face as Fooey thrust his head against her.
This greeting, was it some kind of trap? She had barely the time to think. Parrying the beast's lunge to her side, she managed to put some distance between the horns and her body. But that greeting really shook her grounds.
= You can talk? How is it even possible? =
For an instant, there was hesitation to continue her fight. Mostly since she got here mentally prepared to face a mindless beast. But, who was truly the mindless beast so far? She was puzzled, but her guard didn't fell down the slightest. After all it was her first exhibition match. She couldn't just put it away without a good reason.
                                                          = Who are you? =
There was a hint of curiosity on her, as her face softened to the beast. Keeping the guard up, she began a soft yet steady footwork trying to keep some prudent distance between them while examining Fooey for a second. She couldn't shake the thought that he was just an animal or a beast since his looks were clearly those of a demon. But no one ever told her demons were sentient. Other than just an enemy that they needed to overcome.
