The Great Absolute

Why is warning or prep time important?

The entire skill set I use is pretty much all based off of quick and critical strikes, save one or two.

Well if you look at things from a realistic standpoint... when executing any kind of BIG maneuver you either inadvertently give your opponent fair warning through positioning or you set it up through planning.

Tres's move is a open/ender. He can either use it to open a combination by forcing his opponent to reposition themselves or end one with a hard hitting assault.

So although the dialing thing isn't a bad start to balance it...having 235lbs of crystal magically appear before you from any distance seemingly instantaneously is bad. You are going to force people to either bullshit you on time or positioning ...sometimes both.

The last time I spoke to you about this I suggest you add a visual signal to the move not as flavor text but as part of the appearance of clone Tres. a bright light to force the opponent to acknowledge something is coming and maybe a 1 second delay from existence to execution.

That would greatly reduce the auto-hit nature of the ability and allow you to continue to use it has you have.

Tres Ecstuffuan
So I have it on good authority that the guy who is supposed to fight you probably isn't. That is by no means an official statement.

That being said, I want to fight Hank Hill.

Ahem.

[2/28/2014 9:55:19 PM]
John: So Savoki says I have to fight you in Contest of Champions.
[2/28/2014 10:14:01 PM] Lord Haelstrom: Sure. 8)
[2/28/2014 10:14:08 PM] Lord Haelstrom: Wait, is it started/starting?
[2/28/2014 10:14:22 PM] Lord Haelstrom: I've gotten like zero notifications. DAMN NO HYPE TOURNAMENT
[2/28/2014 10:17:41 PM] John: Yeah.
[2/28/2014 10:17:50 PM] John: Am I really going to have to fight Hank Hill?
[2/28/2014 10:17:59 PM] Lord Haelstrom: I was gonna submit Omi but they never got back to me so, yeah.
[2/28/2014 10:18:03 PM] Lord Haelstrom: You're really gonna have to fight Hank Hill.
[2/28/2014 10:18:10 PM] John: I'll be straight
[2/28/2014 10:18:12 PM] Lord Haelstrom: And with a monster of a kit too.
[2/28/2014 10:18:13 PM] John: That honestl
[2/28/2014 10:18:19 PM] John: Makes me just want to drop out now.
[2/28/2014 10:18:26 PM] Lord Haelstrom: I fully understand.
[2/28/2014 10:18:35 PM] Lord Haelstrom: However, I've always been decent at playing even my comedic characters in a..
[2/28/2014 10:18:37 PM] Lord Haelstrom: ..Effective manner.
[2/28/2014 10:18:58 PM] Lord Haelstrom: And this particular Hank Hill if I can find where I posted my profile details [will have to search through Skype logs] is no exception.
[2/28/2014 10:20:06 PM] Lord Haelstrom: I suppose it's as much my fault for not pestering Hero about the exact start date.
[2/28/2014 10:20:41 PM] John: Because I entered a serious character.
[2/28/2014 10:20:47 PM] John: And this is sorta like... gonna be a joke.
[2/28/2014 10:20:48 PM] John: >.<
[2/28/2014 10:20:57 PM] Lord Haelstrom: Yeah, I noticed half the participants are serious characters, and half are..
[2/28/2014 10:21:06 PM] Lord Haelstrom: ...well, let's just say Hank Hill's the least of your concerns.
[2/28/2014 10:21:15 PM] Lord Haelstrom: But, I'll show you no quarter!
[2/28/2014 10:21:29 PM] John: lol
[2/28/2014 10:21:39 PM] John: You may not have to worry about it
[2/28/2014 10:21:43 PM] Lord Haelstrom: 'Ere, do me a favor and link me. I migrated OS's / Browsers.
[2/28/2014 10:21:54 PM] John: I'll probably just move on to something else.
[2/28/2014 10:21:58 PM] John: No offense to you or anything.
[2/28/2014 10:22:01 PM] Lord Haelstrom: I understand you dislike the notion of fighting Hank Rutherford Hill, but a challenge is a challenge. 8)
[2/28/2014 10:22:56 PM] John: Nah.
[2/28/2014 10:23:32 PM] John: I don't need gold. I'm worth half a billion. I just wanted to fight in a serious tournament where I could progress my character a bit. Doesn't seem like this is the place.
[2/28/2014 10:23:53 PM] Lord Haelstrom: [Shakes his head] Fair enough. I cannot blame you. Were I less experienced or skilled, I too would be intimidated by what is in store.
[2/28/2014 10:25:36 PM] John: lol
[2/28/2014 10:25:39 PM] John: Yeah.
[2/28/2014 10:26:44 PM] John: Sorry to leave you hanging or anything, but this isn't my cup of tea. My writing would be crappy.
[2/28/2014 10:27:36 PM] Lord Haelstrom: In seriousness, fair enough. It's really not everyone's thing to be able to adapt to a tone shift like that.
[2/28/2014 10:28:26 PM] John: If I had entered a joke character - like say, Oliver the Canadian Ninja
[2/28/2014 10:28:28 PM] John: Sure.
[2/28/2014 10:28:29 PM] John: Lets have it.
[2/28/2014 10:28:46 PM] Lord Haelstrom: Well, how I do it with my serious characters when bizarre s**t enters is I find a way of comedically adapting them.
[2/28/2014 10:29:04 PM] Lord Haelstrom: Like Omi. He'll take everything so seriously in an absurd situation that it's comical in and of itself.
[2/28/2014 10:29:32 PM] John: Yeah, but I'm not able to write like that.
[2/28/2014 10:30:07 PM] Lord Haelstrom: It's not something you're like.. born with. lol
[2/28/2014 10:30:17 PM] Lord Haelstrom: It's something you have to try and put your head into I suppose.
[2/28/2014 10:31:31 PM] John: I suppose.
[2/28/2014 10:32:06 PM] Lord Haelstrom: Off hand, I see another goofy character in the roster.
[2/28/2014 10:32:09 PM] Lord Haelstrom: "Justice Guy (jello)"
[2/28/2014 10:32:17 PM] Lord Haelstrom: Which is Mister Justice from Samurai Flamenco.
[2/28/2014 10:32:36 PM] Lord Haelstrom: But anyone who doesn't take the combat application seriously'll get their s**t wrecked is the truly comedic thing.
[2/28/2014 10:33:03 PM] John: Yeah, I noticed that.
[2/28/2014 10:33:30 PM] John: I'll wait till another tournament comes along.
[2/28/2014 10:33:33 PM] Lord Haelstrom: Still, you have my apologies for not presenting something you'd have fun fighting.
[2/28/2014 10:33:52 PM] Lord Haelstrom: Ideally we'll meet up in something else sometime.
[2/28/2014 10:34:11 PM] Lord Haelstrom: I think the day I entered Hank Hill,
[2/28/2014 10:34:35 PM] Lord Haelstrom: -I saw Molestia, Kire, Ertai, Vintrict, Sigil, etc.
-I was drunk.
-I'd just watched King of the Kill clips on YouTube.
[2/28/2014 10:36:22 PM] John: Probably going to get people making snide comments about me quitting like this, but whatever.
[2/28/2014 10:36:30 PM] Lord Haelstrom: ******** 'em.
[2/28/2014 10:36:39 PM] John: I'd rather go have fun doing something else than force myself into a situation I can't really... enjoy.
[2/28/2014 10:36:41 PM] Lord Haelstrom: Always do what feels best to you. And if you decide to fight anyway, I'm around.
[2/28/2014 10:36:56 PM] John: Anyways.
[2/28/2014 10:37:11 PM] John: I found a nice spot in commerce to tuck myself into until a new tournament comes along.
[2/28/2014 10:37:14 PM] John: Personally.
[2/28/2014 10:37:30 PM] John: I have been toying with the idea of Mortal Kombat.
[2/28/2014 10:37:48 PM] John: An actual Mortal Kombat tournament.
[2/28/2014 10:38:13 PM] Lord Haelstrom: You may not have long to wait. I'm focusing on getting different employment before I commit myself to a big project, but soon as that happens, I'm going to be opening THE NEXT HOH. Already been taking care of the groundwork for the past month-ish behind the scenes.
[2/28/2014 10:38:25 PM] Lord Haelstrom: A fatal tournament would be excellent.
[2/28/2014 10:38:26 PM] John: Oh yeah?
[2/28/2014 10:38:33 PM] John: And yeah.
[2/28/2014 10:38:33 PM] Lord Haelstrom: A scarcity in the community.
[2/28/2014 10:38:39 PM] John: I mean the groundwork for the tourament is there.
[2/28/2014 10:38:46 PM] John: And a storyline too.
[2/28/2014 10:39:01 PM] John: Warriors from all ove the realms?
[2/28/2014 10:39:05 PM] John: Or Gaian warriors?
[2/28/2014 10:39:56 PM] Lord Haelstrom: An idea I had a long time ago I wanna try sometime, is a roleplay tournament [not vice versa] where you don't enter or make a character at all.
[2/28/2014 10:40:48 PM] Lord Haelstrom: Instead, you're randomly assigned a character from a large and growing pool of things ranging from a slightly more intelligent than normal dog to Ertai to [insert random thing people submit to a pool here.] And you have to learn that character as you play, since you're assigned it the same time the fight starts.
[2/28/2014 10:41:17 PM] John: I don't see that ending well.
[2/28/2014 10:41:18 PM] John: xD
[2/28/2014 10:41:20 PM] Lord Haelstrom: Would curb metagaming significantly and would instead focus on your adaptation capabilities. Plus it'd be ******** hilarious to see KB roleplaying as Ryugi.
[2/28/2014 10:41:27 PM] Lord Haelstrom: Oh it'd be chaos. lol
[2/28/2014 10:41:32 PM] Lord Haelstrom: But entertaining as hell chaos.
[2/28/2014 10:43:48 PM] Lord Haelstrom: http://www.gaiaonline.com/guilds/viewtopic.php?page=4&t=24078907#363206049

My retort is quite excellent, I think you'll admit.
[2/28/2014 10:43:54 PM] John: Personally I want to do Mortal Kombat. Tag-Teams vs Tag-Teams. With the winner becoming the champions of the Elder Gods. I'd throw in intrigue though.
[2/28/2014 10:44:01 PM] John: Such as sabotage.
[2/28/2014 10:44:12 PM] John: People having to do s**t during down-times.
[2/28/2014 10:44:44 PM] Lord Haelstrom: Certainly. I could be down for MORTAL KOMBATTTTT
[2/28/2014 10:45:07 PM] John: I have it planned out though.
[2/28/2014 10:45:19 PM] John: Match ends in a draw or no winner at the end?
[2/28/2014 10:45:25 PM] John: The loser is publically executed by the winner.
[2/28/2014 10:45:43 PM] John: When the decision drops.
[2/28/2014 10:46:01 PM] John: If they don't want to write it, a judge writes it quick and cleanly.
[2/28/2014 10:46:26 PM] John: One rule I intend to enforce is that the identify of judges is unknown.
[2/28/2014 10:46:33 PM] John: If a judge reveals himself, he's fired.
[2/28/2014 10:47:09 PM] John: I doubt I'll go with a point system.
[2/28/2014 10:47:33 PM] Lord Haelstrom: I'll figure the judges out and get them fired.
[2/28/2014 10:47:36 PM] Lord Haelstrom: I'm that good.
[2/28/2014 10:48:34 PM] John: Bah.
[2/28/2014 10:48:39 PM] John: That's cruel. xD
[2/28/2014 10:49:23 PM] John: It's all in the planning stage still.
[2/28/2014 10:49:28 PM] John: Lethal fights.
[2/28/2014 10:49:30 PM] John: Money.
[2/28/2014 10:49:51 PM] John: Restrictions on abilities. Mortal Kombat has allowed a lot of things though.
[2/28/2014 10:50:00 PM] John: I might allow limited teleportation.
[2/28/2014 10:53:05 PM] Lord Haelstrom: Yeah, anything that seems broken can be made "legit" if properly restricted.
[2/28/2014 10:53:09 PM] Lord Haelstrom: Incidentally. One moment.
[2/28/2014 10:57:29 PM] Lord Haelstrom: Found it.
[2/28/2014 10:57:36 PM] Lord Haelstrom: So -had you fought-.
[2/28/2014 10:57:50 PM] John: ?
[2/28/2014 10:57:51 PM] Lord Haelstrom: http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/barton-ooc/the-hive-sike-general-discussion/t.63413249_151444/#151444

Here's the profile I whipped up in a total of 13 minutes.
[2/28/2014 10:58:07 PM] John: I read it already.
[2/28/2014 10:58:10 PM] John: A while back.
[2/28/2014 10:58:10 PM] John: XD
[2/28/2014 10:58:18 PM] Lord Haelstrom: Excellent. Then you knew the danger.
[2/28/2014 10:58:21 PM] Lord Haelstrom: THE PROPANE DANGER
[2/28/2014 10:58:32 PM] John: Super Saiyan Danger
[2/28/2014 10:59:28 PM] John: You know, I still wanted you to look over a profile of mine.
[2/28/2014 10:59:30 PM] John: XD
[2/28/2014 11:00:08 PM] Lord Haelstrom: I am da best.
[2/28/2014 11:00:11 PM] Lord Haelstrom: 8)
[2/28/2014 11:00:38 PM] John: Too bad I erased it and rote new stuff.
[2/28/2014 11:00:39 PM] John: xD
[2/28/2014 11:00:56 PM] Lord Haelstrom: Damn shame.
[2/28/2014 11:04:29 PM] John: Basically the new is just that his physical stats are higher than a humans. Senses are higher. He can breath holy fire. Can fly. Has armor and a falchion with lightning powers.
[2/28/2014 11:04:53 PM] Lord Haelstrom: Holy fire's always an excellent choice.
[2/28/2014 11:05:02 PM] Lord Haelstrom: Deletes charactes like KB from existence.
[2/28/2014 11:05:36 PM] John: There are other abilities.
[2/28/2014 11:05:46 PM] John: Stuff that is mostly for plots and support.
[2/28/2014 11:06:00 PM] John: Healing/planar travel/reviving dead people
[2/28/2014 11:08:28 PM] John: I imagine my angel could delete KB pretty easily.
[2/28/2014 11:08:31 PM] John: lol
[2/28/2014 11:08:53 PM] Lord Haelstrom: Would be excellent to behold.
[3/1/2014 1:45:04 PM] Lord Haelstrom: http://www.gaiaonline.com/guilds/viewtopic.php?page=1&t=24250435#363217133
[3/1/2014 3:52:46 PM] John: Forget to mention Hank being a finely tuned former highschool athelete
[3/1/2014 3:53:05 PM] Lord Haelstrom: It's in his profile. And will be mentioned many times.
[3/1/2014 3:53:18 PM] Lord Haelstrom: He set the record for rushing yards and it has never been broken.
[3/1/2014 3:55:15 PM] John: I'll admit that your post killed me.
[3/1/2014 3:55:21 PM] John: I loved it
[3/1/2014 3:55:32 PM] John: D< But angryily because I don't want to do this
[3/1/2014 3:55:52 PM] Lord Haelstrom: I'm a Super Saiyan, I tell you h'wat.
[3/1/2014 3:56:42 PM] John: Meh.
[3/1/2014 3:57:01 PM] John: I can't even think of a single word to write.
[3/1/2014 3:57:17 PM] Lord Haelstrom: Just be careful.
[3/1/2014 3:57:24 PM] Lord Haelstrom: If you make Hank Furious as Heck, it's over.
[3/1/2014 4:02:05 PM] John: This fight would have potential.
[3/1/2014 4:02:12 PM] John: I kinda want to have Khan show up instead.
[3/1/2014 4:02:21 PM] Lord Haelstrom: Gotta Win.
[3/1/2014 4:03:01 PM] John: Maybe I'll just, like, electrocute you.
[3/1/2014 4:03:24 PM] Lord Haelstrom: Hank's a very durable individual. And if he reaches Super Saiyan, his already formidable combat stats will be multiplied 2.5x.
[3/1/2014 4:03:30 PM] Lord Haelstrom: Bring it on!
[3/1/2014 4:03:39 PM] Lord Haelstrom: If you don't get cooked by lady Propane first.
[3/1/2014 4:04:10 PM] John: Can't believe I'm really considering this.
[3/3/2014 5:42:16 AM] John: Just realized that even if I wanted to fight you, I don't have an invite to the guild.
[3/3/2014 5:49:40 AM] Lord Haelstrom: ..That's racist.
[3/3/2014 5:50:10 AM] John: Might just taunt him the entire match.
[3/3/2014 5:50:13 AM] John: Not throw a punch.
[3/3/2014 5:50:17 AM] John: Just taunt him.
[3/3/2014 5:50:20 AM] John: All the way to the end.
[3/3/2014 5:50:30 AM] Lord Haelstrom: That'll get him madder than heck.
[3/3/2014 5:51:12 AM] John: Propane is outdated. Communism is the right way.

TL;DR: He doesn't really want to fight Hank Hill. Then he was slightly tempted but didn't have an invite to the guild and didn't feel like inquiring for one. Etc.

Hmm, quite. I'll emphasize the pop of light and flavor it, sort of like how I flavor the Astral Mirror Construct creation (when tres is just making s**t like knives)

Also to add to my discussion with Ertai... if you have a character who boast phenomenal offensive capabilities such your character with it's quick critical strikes, they should suffer with defense or some other attribute.

One of the biggest problems of our or maybe all fighting communities on Gaia is we try and do to much with our characters. We sample the good from several character archetypes and the leave the bad aspects to the wayside.

Everyone's a NinjaMonkTankMage with perfect stats.

That s**t is boring. Nor is it really winning if your kit is doing all the work for you.

It's easy to build a predetermined kit that can win fights... but for me it's alot more fun to go in with a specialized kit made only to do one thing and be versatile with your execution.

To elaborate on the warning / impending signal concept.

Typically the best fit character mechanics in a roleplayed fight are those your opponent can meaningfully interact with. When your opponent, OOC and IC, has absolutely no idea when something might come or how, they can't meaningfully make a response to it. They have to kind of bullshit it or get deleted. Both of which are terrible.

Obviously there's things you won't do this with, but on average:

Take a flaming, enchanted sword. It's a sword that, on impact, makes fire damage. You walk in with a regular looking b*****d sword, swing it, and then on impact, it ******** erupts the opponent in flames. Unless they metagame this or go "AHW I'VE SEEN THIS PERSON FIGHT BEFORE," what the ******** can they meaningfully do besides have their body be resistant to fire because they jerk off in pools of lava? Nothing. They guard against that weapon or parry it and they go up in flames.

Give that same sword visual particles of flames, or a flame insignia and a red hued blade, -something- and all of a sudden, they're more wary of it. They'll be cautious. They might even back the ******** up -- so not only do they get to actually prepare in a meaningful manner to that weapon, it's even helping -you- by making them hesitant. Lot more interesting for both parties.

Same concept with a charge move. Omi's woowoo snakes are on their own individually, not that strong. Still, there's constant tells with them; most of all they're flying, glowing red snakes with almost laser-like eyeballs. The subtlety and trickery Omi can pull isn't dampened by this at all, meanwhile his opponent is able to impact them with all sorts of different attacks and plainly see them coming given they also have a common origin point - his body [now his back.]

Typically: the faster and harder to preempt a move an attack is, the weaker it should be in impact.
The stronger and "big" attacks shouldn't be completely hidden until the last possible moment.

Maybe the guy's making hand signs or adjusting gear or is starting to sweat like crazy out of nowhere like he's putting in big effort; something should be a sign. Because otherwise, why can't we just enter characters who can instantaneously vomit near-invisible lasers through your character's chest with no tells or charge time?

Answer: in a competitive setting, that'd be ******** boring to read and require no skill to execute on their part. And you'd be forced to either die or Matrix dodge, both of which are garbage paths.

Unfortunately, Kelly, "interesting" is subjective. Giving an attack a warning is not logical. There are logical warnings, like winding up for a haymaker. Then there's unnecessary warnings, such as putting a caution sign on your sword just to try to metagame warn your opponent. If you want to stay fair to your opponent oocly, then you try your best to keep things believable, or at least making your stuff as believable as possible.

This is a competition. ICly and OOCly. IC, a character in a fighting setting is going to try to win. And they will not stiffen their chances by making obvious set ups to their attacks. There's no reason to.

"But it's for the enjoyment of both parties." No it's not. It's for the enjoyment of one person. You're competing with someone else in a thread where both are contesting to move on. The general consensus is "the participants are rping for the sake of entertainment and themselves." Bullshit. If you were, then how about giving up control of your character to your opponent and letting you each take turns writing out what happens? That's really collaboration. But you're not. You're subject to your own devices and outcome. There might be one occasional person who may give up the whole sense of self progression for the sake of someone else, but it's an exception and won't happen in a tournament setting most of the time.

Besides, it's Fighting 101 not to make your moves so obvious to begin with. I don't get you guys most of the time. At one moment, you want logical realism. Then the next, you suddenly want to throw it all away for the sake of flashiness and trying to keep nice to your opponent. It's not possible in this rping scenario.

What people want, but are too squirrely to admit, is an opponent who gives them a good challenge...Makes them work for the victory...but still loses in the end.

People can lie to themselves all the want, but this IS a competition...

The perfect fight, for me, is one where I challenge myself in some way; beating my opponent while giving them something enjoyable to read, and leaving them with a lasting impression. Take Scaler, for example, he knows that he lost to me in the GTB last year...He also knows what he could've done differently...

And now he WANTS to beat me; to make that right, and prove himself. He didn't "job" for me, and I didn't go easy on him...It was a pure battle.

Genuinely fun.

Colonel Iyam A Heita

I'm gonna be honest, probably to my detriment.

I play Tres one of two ways.

Usually I play him as a warrior who is a showman who makes mistakes due to his character flaws.

There are other times where I play him like a FIGHTING ROBOT who maintains 100% pressure 100% of the time. I do that when I feel like otherwise I'll get my s**t pushed in...such as my current fight.

Its because Dith is really good and I feel like if I don't do that, then Tres is just gonna be a Jabroni.

I'd like to cut loose and relax but I'm not confident enough in this fight to do more purposeful selling

That isn't to say I'll bullshit.

If he beats me, he beats me. Under no circumstances where I won't be fair.

but there are times when I have to decide as a player 'If I give this person an inch, will they punch my characters heart out through his chest'

You're being very skittish with this fight, Tres.

Veeeery skittish.

Every attack you've put out so far has been ranged, or done from behind...I'm not saying you -should- fight me toe to toe.

That would be stupid on your part. pirate

I like the part where Hael decided to enter a joke character because he saw I was participating.

I am slightly offended by this, I'm not going to lie.

You haven't thrown very many any attacks.

I would love to fight you hand to hand. Thats what my last (well before the last) post was but It takes two to tango.

You have to try to hit me first.

Edit: That being said, as you've noticed, if you present me with a tactical advantage, I'm going to take it.
