Ikaika: -He peered down at the room from the wide rafters, more at ease in a high place than on the ground. He'd had to climb up, since his arm webbings weren't ideal for flight, but they were good enough for gliding. That's why he liked going as high as possible, so he could glide farther if need be.-
Elijah:*He prances into the shop with carefree happiness. As he stops to take in his surroundings, he sees another male sitting in the rafters. He tilts his head to the sit in curiosity, much like a puppy, before yelling at the stranger.* Hey! What're you doing up there? *he wished he could climb up, so he didn't have to yell, but heights weren't always his favorite thing in the world.*
Ikaika: -He had spotted the male coming in of course, but it took him by surprise when the other addressed him. To be honest, it was his experience that folks rarely looked up in the first place. He hissed softly; not a sound of menace as it might have been coming from another, but a gentle, slightly surprised noise reminiscent to the sound of falling water. He leaned over the edge of the beam without fear for the drop below him. When he spoke his voice had a quietness to it, as though he didn't often speak above a whisper and was not used to raising it.- "Watching, I am. The world easier to see, from above is. Safer."
Elijah:*Hissing? Why would that male be making that noise at him? He hoped he didn't startle him, or even worse offend him He strained to hear the voice of the noodle in the rafter but managed. His speech was odd but...cute. Sort of reminded him of that little green guy from those scifi movies that he didn't pay enough attention to.* I...I didn't mean to startle you! And I'm not dangerous, I really promise. So it should be safe down here if you'd like!
Ikaika: -He made a chattering sound while he considered the male's words. Certainly the other didn't seem harmful. He could tell a lot just listening to people speak, and thus far his impression was of someone quite open. With practiced ease he slid off the beam, extending his arms so that he could glide down to the floor. He was quite familiar with how far below the floor was, even if his sight wasn't the best, and his back paws made soft thumps as they hit the ground, followed by his front paws as he dropped his arms a moment later. His large ears seemed to swiveled independently of each other on his head while he turned to face the male.- "Startle me, you did not. Surprised only. To look up, many do not. Ikaika, my name is. Excuse my speech, I hope you will. New to the tongue, I am still."
Elijah:* He was startled by the male's small wings as he came flying down from the rafters. He hadn't realized that he was like a little bat! His rainbow ears reminded him of his own colorful rear-end and he giggled under his breath, laughing more audibly when he realized the poetry in the noodle's words. He sat up tall so that his new friend wouldn't think he was being afraid.*I always check my surroundings. You never know what's hiding in the dark. I'm Elijah! And your speech is just fine. I hope you realized you rhymed though!*He laughed harder at the coincidental "will" and "still"*Anyways, it's nice to meet you Ikaika! What's like to be able to fly?*He looked curiously at the other's small wings*
Ikaika: -He smiled.- "Of course. Sometimes helped, it cannot be, when there no words are, to take their place." -He extended one of his arms so Elijah could better see the webbing that ran its length to connect to his body.- "These are too small, of use to be in flying. Only gliding, I can do." -His expression was thoughtful.- "On how it is, thought much, I have not. Something I have always been able to do, it is, so seemed special, it did not."
Elijah: So you can't actually fly? *he wore the look of a sad puppy dog. He had always loved the idea flight and was hoping he could get some insight into what its really like. He quickly perked up though, eager to keep chattering away* gliding must still be awesome though! There's nothing cooler than being able to fly, so of course it's special! *he blushed a bit, hoping he didn't seem too envious of Ikaika. He sat down and wagged his tail. * why wouldn't you think it's special? Not all of us have wings like you!
Ikaika: -He made a hissing, chuckling sound, ears both swiveling forward to face Elijah. Since they tended to move around a lot, one could learn just from watching his ears where Ikaika's attention was.- "Think it is special do you, that you can walk on the ground? Natural, it is. One thinks not often on abilities one born with, is." -Still, he couldn't help but preen a little at the very obvious interest Elijah was showing towards Ikaika's "wings". He hadn't much experience with others outside his species, so having something he thought of as commonplace being admired was flattering.- "Lying I would be, to say gliding fun is not. I greatly enjoy it."
Elijah:*he tilted his head to the side in curiosity as he listened to Ikaika. This was true, that he felt walking to be natural, and now as he thought about it more lightbulbs clicked on in his head. He was really getting the sense that this guy was waaaayyyy smart. He could probably learn a lot from Ikaika too, if Ikaika stuck around long enough.* I guess I just never thought of it that way before. That's a really good point!* he perked his ears up at the gliding idea and wondered about other bat stuff, but he was too embarrassed to ask now. He didn't want to make his new friend embarrassed of his own body. He decided to stick to the gliding idea instead, much safer. so you can like jump off buildings and stuff and not get hurt?
Ikaika: -His head tilted to the side in puzzlement. Buildings? It took him a moment to place a mental image with the word, his eyes brightening when it clicked for him. Ah yes those were the things people sometimes lived in, or did things in if they didn't have caves. Where he was from such buildings weren't terribly common, nor very big, but on the rare occasions the wind took him farther than usual he had seen on the horizon bright lights and huge shapes that took the concept of "building" as he knew it and blew it completely out of all comprehension.- "Get hurt, one does not, from the jumping. It is the landing that hurts." -He gave another hissing laugh.- "Land soft, my wings help me do. It on the wind depends, just how soft. Land hard a time or two have I. Fliers the same will tell you." -He cocked his head again and glanced briefly down at the bright orange webbing.- "Truth to tell, flight I can manage but so much energy it takes for so little result, easier to be walking and climbing."
Elijah:* he watched Ikaika carefully, realizing that the guy seems to be confused. Elijah didn't understand what could possibly be tripping him up, but he must have worked out whatever it was because he saw the lightbulb click in Ikaika's head.He chuckled at Ikaika's joke, finding him to be very amusing.* Hahaha I'm sure you know what I meant! *his eyes sparkled as he laughed, humor tended to bring out the best in his happy personality.*And that sucks that you can't fly unless you try that hard,* his eyes lit up and wagged his tail happily.* Sort of like me and running! its fun and fast, but waaayyyy too much effort! *he snorted at his own joke and twitched his tail nervously as he hoped that Ikaika had a sense of humor too*
Ikaika: -He laughed softly, but nodded and smiled all the same.- "Very like, but running is to be much easier than trying to fly. Good for body though, it is. I exercise often to keep fat away." -He mimed waddling around as though he had a huge belly, and make a show of trying to climb something only to get pulled down by his own imaginary weight, landing comically on the ground.-
Elijah:*He couldn't believe his eyes! That was like...The FUNNIEST thing ever! Elijah began laughing so hard that he was crying, gasping for air between the cackles. It took him a good minute to recuperate enough to even be able to speak.*See, running is too much effort though!* he looks down at his own belly*and I don't think that I'm too big anyways! I actually think that I laugh so hard all the time that it burns all my calories away! Is that even really possible?
Ikaika: -He stared at Elijah as the other male cackled, a bemused yet amused smile on his face while he waited patiently for the other to get himself under control.- "If laugh often like that you do, much weight I imagine you lose." -He gave a small hissing chuckle. He hadn't seen anyone put that much of a reaction into their amusement before, since his colony had been the sorts for quieter appreciation. Just watching it had made Ikaika feel someone amused himself.- "Only active one must keep, to keep fat away. Exercise often I do, only because I am more active than most." -A speculative look crossed his face as his ears flicked about, picking up sound from the entire area.- "Climbing, have you tried? Some strength it takes, but balance more important is."
Elijah: Climbing? Never really thought about it I suppose...*he thought to himself about it, lifting one of his paws towards his face so he could get a good look at it, wondering if he could even get enough grip on something to be able to climb it. He had always loved the idea of being high up, hence his fascination with flying. Plus it was clearly something Ikaika was interested in and, deep down, he was beginning to really like the guy. Ikaika was cute and spending more time with him could be good...He snapped his head upwards, stopping his thoughts and blushing red.* But I can surely give it a try! It can't be that hard! *He looked up into the rafters Ikaika had started in and tried to climb up into them. He got maybe 10 feet up before he tumbled clumsily down the ground, shaking himself off and pretending like nothing happened.*Looks like I might need a little practice...*he mumbled with an embarassed tone.*
Ikaika: -He was quite amused, but politely refrained from laughing at his new friend. It really was like watching a new pup learning new physical skills; both amusing and cute at the same time.- "Hard climb it is to be getting up in the rafters. Start with something easier you might. More holds along the way trees have, for example. Get good at that, then climb rafters again you should try."
Elijah: * he was determined to prove Ikaika wrong. Not one to look weak in front of someone he wanted to impress, he smiled brightly with a glimmer of mischief in his eyes * No no, I can do it. I know I can! Watch this! *He bounced up to climb into the rafters, doing a fair but clumsy job of getting up until he reached the top. Right as he was about to climb on to the final board, he lost his footing and slipped with a yelp, grabbing on to the board for dear life. It was sort of comical actually, and now the poor guy was stuck in the air, too embarrassed to ask for help. He flailed for a few seconds, struggling to get up, before he was finally able to swing one of back paws onto the board and climb onto it. He beamed brightly, his whole expression lighting up, hoping that maybe now he didn't look so sad for not being able to climb*. Told you I could do it!
Ikaika: -He'd been watching with a bit of worry as Elijah struggled to get into the rafters. When he managed it and stood safely on the solid wood, he indulged in a hissing laugh.- "Yes, good you did manage. Perhaps next time more grace, and looking not like a day-old pup. Practice will help you achieve this." -He moved over to the wall and with quick, efficient moves that looked effortless he followed Elijah into the rafters. In reality it was also a great physical effort for him, but he was used to climbing and had done so his whole life, so it went easier for him. Once in the rafters he moved over next to Elijah and looked down at the ground below.- "A good spot this is. Glad I am that these rafters here are, for on the ground not entirely comfortable do I feel."
Elijah:Wh...Wait What? A day old pup?*he didn't think he looked THAT bad ...At least he hoped he didn't. His face flushed deep red in embarrassment and when Ikaika sat next to him he scooted a littler closer, almost unconsciously. He changed the subject to anything other than his terribly clumsy performance.* You're right, this is a great spot! I've always loved the view from up high. But why wouldn't you feel comfortable on the ground? Its probably the most sturdiest thing around. *He looked down over the edge, tottering forward a bit before recovering his balance.*Exactly my point,* he laughed nervously*It seems like it would be dangerous up here!
Ikaika: -He lifted a back leg and scratched at the back of one of his ears, clearly not bothered by the height or the male wiggling around at his side.- "High up safe. Predators on ground cannot touch the prey out of reach." -He settled back down, ears flicking all directions as he peered over the edge himself.- "Practice much and the height soon bothers you not. Above walk unseen you can. Dangers it has, like any place, but also safer when smaller or not as strong as beasts on the ground being."
Elijah: Predators? No one's gonna hurt you down there. And if they try, you've got me. I'll stop 'em dead!*he flushed red again, realizing how protective he was being. Oops.He tried to back track and cover his tracks*I mean, I love it up here and the view is great, but you shouldn't be up here just because you're scared! You should feel safe anywhere you go. I'm sure it gets easier with practice, and I'll for sure be practicing! You shouldn't feel unsafe on the ground though.
Ikaika: -His bright green eyes glimmered with amusement. Elijah was chatty and very open, but it seemed those qualities brought him a bit of dismay.- "Not afraid am I to walking on the ground be. More comfortable to being in a place that feels natural. Just like more comfortable on the ground you feel, than if in water you were. To face predator in the water, scare you would it not?"
Elijah:*he was freaking out about his little slip up quite a bit. "Man, that was a bad one.....woah. his eyes are so... pretty" he thought to himself, getting distracted mid thought. his mind wandered toward Ikaika again, but at least now his cheeks weren't painted a bright red. Getting back to the conversation he responded* Yeah that would be scary! I hate sharks! With their teeth as big as my face and those beedy little eyes. Ugh.. hahaha! Plus I could get used to being up here. There's something wonderful about being able to see everything from high above. * he sighed happily and watched the happenings below*
Ikaika: -He agreed with Elijah's assessment with a forceful nod. The thought of sea predators scared him too. Maybe some land predators could be hard to spot, but at least there were hiding spots or ways to avoid them, even fight if need be. How did you hide from or fight something in the water, when it could strike unseen and had the advantage of terrain?- "Nice up high to being. View is good. Walk unseen you can. Still, high places everywhere are not. Good to know defense for walking on ground. Agree with you on that matter I do."
Elijah:True! You've got to be prepared for anything. *He curled tight, lay down in the rafters being careful to keep his balance, and watched dreamily over the edge for a minute. After that time he realized he was absolutely unprepared for anything that could happen to him while he was up high. But maybe...maybe he could get his new friend to teach him? He blushed at the thought, wanting nothing more than to spend more time Ikaika. Elijah stood up, and cleared his throat before turning to him. uhh... Ikaika? Maybe I could teach you how defend yourself on the ground, since you seem so unsure. I promise I could be a good teacher. And maybe you could teach me how to be prepared up here? I know nothing what might try to get me up this high. He turned his head down for a second, trying to get rid of his blush, before looking back up at Ikaika with hopeful eyes.*
Ikaika: -His ears flicked about, listening for sound as they always did while Elijah chose to lie down for a bit. He was glad to see his new friend feeling comfortable enough with the height to do that. Some ground walkers didn't even like being in high places. Then he stood up again, looking a little embarrassed and blushing. Ikaika listened to what Elijah had to say, and thought it was quite sensible.- "Yes. On ground to be defending myself, learn would be good. Run and avoid I usually do, but on the ground not often am I." -He thought about the Elijah's request and gave it the best answer he could think of.- "Best to being learn to comfortable feel walking among high, on branches and things of these natures. Thin and narrow harder to deal with is than wide and thick. Less stable it is, especially when winds blowing are. When comfortable moving among heights, easier to evade predators that follow to high." -A slight frown creased his brow.- "Where I live, not many climbing predators there are. Most dangerous are wild boars, but climb they cannot so safe in trees I am. Other places more do they have of things that can climb, but specifics I know not."
Elijah:W-w-w-Wild Boars?!*Elijah jumped straight in to the air just at the thought of them, careful to land safely on the board. Man those things are scary. Those tusks could really do damage...*then he realized that he couldn't let his guard down now, he still needed to look tough! what kind of a teacher would he be if he was scared too?*But after I'm done teaching you you'll be a pro! He gave it more thought and realized...he didn't even know where boars would be living around here. He had only seen them in TV shows.So where are you from? Because I guarantee you there are no wild boar around here.
Ikaika: -He made a sound somewhat like a chitter, nodding his head in agreement.- "Bad they are. To encounter one best it is not." -He tilted his head and looked at Elijah, curious as to what he would teach him that could make dealing with wild hogs seem to be no problem. Mostly he just avoided them in trees, but it would be nice if there were ways of safely driving the things off.- "On island it is I live. Warm, many islands. Much rain and fruit." -He grinned; he did love fresh fruit.- "Born of fire they are. And grow still they do. Best to stay away from rock rivers when they flow. Loud and hot, very dangerous they are being."
Elijah:Wow!*his eyes lit up at the sound of the islands*That sounds beautiful! I wouldn't mind living there!*he thought to himself about how he would be willing to fight off any beast to live there*You should take me there sometime! That way I could fight off those wild boar!*he chuckled before responding again *Really, the best way to scare them is with fire. Just take some brush, tie it to a stick, and set it on fire. it scares them to death! just make sure to put it out once they're gone.
Ikaika: -His eyes looked alarmed and he chittered in vague agitation.- "Liking fire I am not. Hurting my eyes it is to being, and dangerous. Easy to creating accident." -He calmed down a bit, realizing he might startle Elijah or hurt his feelings. He'd only been trying to help, after all.- "Impractical it is also being, unless camp you have made. Take time it does to being make fire big enough to scare so big animal. Fast they are, so prepared you are to being ahead of time is best." -He smiled and nudged Elijah's shoulder in the manner of one for whom casual touch is easy.- "But to my home I am being glad to take you one day. Over much water we will have to go." -He cocked his head to the side.- "Bother you, would that?"
Elijah:*his expression grew worried. He didn't mean to upset Ikaika, fire just seemed like an easy way to handle it.* I-I'm sorry. I didn't realize that fire wasn't really an option for you. I 'll think of something else then.* his eyes got sad for a moment until Ikaika nudged him, and then Elijah perked up. He realized Ikaika hadn't been too touchy with him until now, so that meant he didn't screw up too bad.*Really? You would take me there? that would be awesome! going over water wouldn't be bad. What would we do? Take a plane? *he wagged his tail at the thought* I would love to do that!*he beamed happily*Tell me more about it. Whats it like?
Ikaika: -He tilted his head curiously- "Plane? Not to be knowing what that word means." -He charged right on though, not bothering to wait for an explanation.- "Over big water I am going to be getting to this land. Flying I can be doing between islands, but not so big stretch of water as this." -He grinned.- "Many things there are to be doing. Swimming, if you like that. Many fruits to be finding in the land that tasty are that are not being here. Traveling over lands we can be doing, and showing you the wonders of my home. I am hearing many are liking to go there for to being relaxing."
Elijah: Elijah started to answer Well a plane i... but was cut off by Ikaika's excitement. He listened closely before responding to Ikaika. I thought you couldn't fly very far on your wings? You can get across an ocean? so cool! But how would I get there then? He smiled happily at the thought of a warm island.That sounds like heaven. We could do everything you said! we could swim, eat all of the foods 'til we're fat, and see everything new! I cant wait! His tail wagged happily back and forth as he grinned from ear to ear.
Ikaika: "It is between islands I am saying I am to be fly, not across ocean." -He gave a soft hissing laugh.- "Only to be flying between islands on good day. Wind is to be lifting me in the air so that I am to be not flapping arms the whole way. Weather above ocean changes much, fool I would be to be trying to cross that in the sky!" -He grinned and lightly prodded Elijah in the stomach.- "To be getting fat I would not allow you. Much there is to be doing where I live. We will be keeping active between relaxing!"
Elijah: "OOhhhhh okay then!" He smiled brightly. "But then how would we get to the islands from here if you don't fly? I'm okay with airplanes, but I don't know if you are." Elijah was taken by surprise when the noodle prodded him and he exploded into laughter. He was a very ticklish guy and Ikaika just happened to hit the right spot. Once he was able to pull himself together and stand up, he tottered over the edge for a second before catching his balance. "Whew that was a close one!... I promise I wouldn't get FAT fat, but indulging in some island food would be heaven on earth! What's your favorite food from home?"
Ikaika: "Boat," he replied promptly. "Over water I be going. It is to being safe enough. Slower than flight, but if weather rough is not then pleasant the trip is to being." He watched with amusement the reaction he managed to get out of Elijah, taking note of where exactly he poked and resolving to try it again sometime. On land though, since watching Elijah stagger around somewhere high up elicited more alarm than amusement. He'd have to be a bit more careful until he was sure Elijah was a good climber. "Close indeed! To be falling fun is not, though only once it takes for lesson to stick of being careful close to edges." His eyes lit up at the thought of food. "Many things I am to be liking. Insects I am thinking you are not to being interested in, acquired taste they are. Fruits delicious are, especially pineapple. We grow excellent pineapple." His eyes were curious. "Have you ever to be eating pineapple before?"
Elijah:"Oh a boat! Why didn't I think of that?" *he face palmed himself jokingly And laughed at Ikaika's falling comment* "Oh I bet I would learn fast! One small step and..." *he plopped face first on the board making the falling/whistling sound as he went forward. He got up and laughed harder, blushing a bit as tried to make Ikaika laugh. He listened close about the pineapple and wondered what such a strange fruit could be.* "A pineapple? What is a pineapple? is it a spiney apple? is it an apple that grows on pine trees?" He cocked his head to the side curiously.
Ikaika: He chittered in excitement. "Is being very tasty! Grows on ground it does. Big, spikey leaves on top, and fruit is being covered in tough brown skin that is not being pleasant to eat or touch." He used his paws to mime the general shape of the fruit while he described what it looked like. "Inside is being bright yellow, like sun! Very juicy and very sweet it is being. Like it I think you shall!" His eyes sparkled with enthusiasm. He didn't know anyone who could have fresh pineapple, not unless they weren't inclined to sweet things.
