Lin did remember one of Earendil's comments about the people, which it had struck her as odd, but at the time she had written it off as she was never use to formality to begin with.
"The people are very formal with him," she replied, "Like, in the Southland it is normal to show respect to one's ruler, but they bowed low and would not rise until he passed showing far more respect or formality than expected. In fact, they are stiff around royals I think, if interactions in the beginning with Aurin and Earendil are anything to go by."
She let Miyuki play with her fingers, because she needed to think and it helped her to think.
"Otherwise when he isn't around people are normal, if not as Alena have proven quite easy going."

Caranthir nodded. "Exactly so."
He turned to the window and repeated his words more quietly. "Exactly so."
Earendil frowned. "Are you saying that our entire visit was a farce on his part?" he asked. "That he played a role so that we would have a good impression of him, and good things to say about him? But that he is not truly like that?"
Caranthir looked at him evenly. "Is that what you feel?" he asked, rather than giving a straight answer.

Lin would like to believe otherwise, if she had been her mother she would have said to give hte man the beneifit of the doubt, but her father's cycnial nature was rising. She squashed it down before it got too out of hand, even if she understood what Earendil meant.
"Best case scenerio is that we're reading it wrong, this is a society where even though it's not obvious on the surface they're always at war. This could affect how they act, how they view their King, and so forth. They could honesetly feel like they need to give that amount of respect to a man who goes constantly out to the battle field. On a somewhat lesser good scenerio he was being nice to us because we were his only contact to his daughter and he knows it. It doesn't make the entire visit a farce, after all Alena has more say most of the time when he's gone, but it is possible it was putting up a good front just to get back in contact with his daughter."
She paused a bit and then added.
"Worst case scenerio, I don't even know what it could be, because we're missing too much information. Who knows what the King is really like? He only came a few times, and we spent most of our time mapping or in the library with Shiro. The only person who can answer that is Aerin, because honestly we're missing something starting with that dragon attack ending with why Aerin chose to stay here."

"That reminds me," Earendil remembered suddenly. "Lin, I spoke with Sir Valdemar while you were gone, and I asked him if he knew anything about the gnomes. The only other time I've seen him so pale was when you brought the news about the morgawr."
He cleared his throat. "As it turns out, they're not dwarfs at all ... they're like the morgawr, creatures created by Melkor to destroy the world."
Caranthir started. "Are they truly?" he demanded, gripping the prince by the arm. "Is this true?"
Earendil blinked and nodded. "I saw it in that book that Sir Valdemar has, the one showing the history of our world ..."

Lin shuddered at this, books and morgawr did not mix well in Lin's mind set. She held Miyuki instinctively closer, those things were just... awful.
"So you saw them? In the book the same gnomes that we saw on the island?"
If that the case best send a message back and tell them to simply destroy the gnomes they had captive. It would certainly explain their violent tendencies.

Earendil nodded. "I wondered about them, since they didn't seem as much like dwarfs as Alena believed, and so I asked Sir Valdemar to show me the book. He refused to read it to me, though, so I had to read it myself ... and they were there, exactly the same as they were on Amon Darthir."
"The king is out of his mind," Caranthir frowned, shaking his head. "He should have allowed them to be killed years ago. They could be thriving there, living in peace ... if only the king would allow them to kill the gnomes."

"If he didn't know they were related to the morgawr he coudln't have known. The gnomes apparently have a language, and enough intelligence to at least do something. It doesn't help that Alena thought they were ancestors of dwarfs."
That type of research would point to them being sentient beings, and that in itself would make killing them off harder.
"That and the fact they did not attack until the elves were fully settled suggested something beyond a monster menality. It's no wonder why he had treated them like people, really despictable people, but people. Though it does make me wonder why they didn't attack sooner. Creatures like that never struck me as the type to wait until their prey was settled enough to defend themselves."
That was the only odd thing about it all, but the gnomes themselves were strange, and scary.
"Actually... Alena is at least as old as Elros, Elros fought in that war against Melkor and the morgawr. How is it she did not recongize them for what they were?"
Great, another mystery, at times Lin wondered if she was getting to old for them.

"Not all of Melkor's creatures were everywhere," Caranthir replied simply. "If they are only on that island now, then it is possible that they were only there when the fighting took place. No one actually saw the creatures come forth. If you are referring to the book that I believe you are," he added, looking at Earendil, "then Sir Valdemar did not write it, nor did he write the other one, the good book, that is its counterpart. They were given to him."
"Which would explain why he doesn't know everything that's in them," Earendil nodded. "I can understand that."

"Well..." Lin murmured thoughtfully, "It would be best to send a message back about this then. Knowing what the gnomes are will hopefully lead to a better solution."
As in actually get rid of the gnomes rather than to keep the captive ones. There would be no reasoning with them unfortunately.

"When Striate returns," Caranthir nodded. "As he must."
Earendil blinked, suddenly realizing something. "Rhea ... she's going to be going back to all of that," he murmured. He looked at Lin anxiously.

Lin blinked up at him, she supposed everything Rhea had said the night before hadn't quite sunk in yet.
"She did say she would," Lin pointed out, "Does that worry you?"
She was sure despite it all Aurin would take good care of Rhea and as Rhea has proven time and again she wasn't without her own ways of defend herself or others.

"It doesn't worry you?" Earendil blinked at Lin. "I mean, maybe we're jumping to conclusions here, but if we're right about the kind of place Rhea is going back to ..."
He trailed off. It wasn't really their business, was it? Still, they would have to say something to Rhea about it, if only to get her to ask Aerin what her father was truly like.

"It's not like we're not going to tell her what we're finding out," Lin replied, "While no matter where she goes I would be worried for her, but I believe Rhea will be able to handle whatever happens. Well that and knowing Rhea she'll be far more observate than any of us, she would more quickly than us if anything was wrong and be better to deal with that problem."
She had a lot of faith in Rhea, but probably because Rhea was forward, a tad stubborn and well it was Rhea...

"I believe that it would be wise for Rhea to talk to Aerin before she leaves," Caranthir said calmly, "and find out all that she can about Amon Darthir. For her safety, and for Aerin's sake, so that if anything happens we can also learn about it."
Earendil nodded. "We're not sure when they will be leaving, but we first have to deliver a message to the Eastland. Alena has a letter for Elros, the man you replaced, and I'm sure she would like a return message when Aurin and Rhea go back there."

Lin nodded, "Especially since Sir Valdemar said that the two were never apart."
That was a tidbit she did not know about Elros, but then again she never inquired too closely on Elros' past for he had a long and lengthy one that would take a long time to cover and only if he wished to.
All this talk about Amon Darthir sort of made Lin want to go back, but not with Miyuki, or at least she would prefer Miyuki to be older before making such a trip.
