"You've been standing on a flat surface for the past several months," Lin replied wryly, "Land is rarely very flat like a boat's floor."
She let her butterflies loose but told them to keep in sight of the beach. Lin didn't dare let them to further, if she found natural butterflies maybe (maybe with a lot of begging) she could coax them to go further for her.
All the while she stretched and stepping away from Earendil stretched her wings something she hadn't dare do before.

Earendil chuckled. "I meant that it feels as if the land is moving," he grinned at Lin, digging his boot into the sand. "I'll get over it, I'm sure."
"Should only take a few minutes," Roydon called over to Earendil as the crew began setting up a shelter. "You get used to it. Go from land to water and back often enough, and you'll never feel the difference anymore."
Shiro walked straight towards the edge of the jungle, and looked into the foliage thoughtfully. Out came his journal, and he began to write in it.

Senka was having fun making paw prints in the sad, so much that she was jumping around like a frog to make more print.
Lin looked to the sky and wondered if it would be safe to fly, she knew if she was thinking that she had been stuck on a boat for way too long.
"Let's take a look," Lin told Earendil, "Shiro is already looking at the plants."

Earendil nodded. "Let's just make sure that we keep the beach in sight," he murmured. "Last thing we need is to get lost."
In many ways, Earendil had missed out on many things generally considered important by the elves: living in a desert, he had never had the chance to learn about forests, and tracking, and hiding, and hunting.

"Don't worry we will," Lin replied, "Even the foxes aren't going to go that far, so they probably won't find anything."
At least nothing worth taking back in terms of sound.
"But I want to see the plants."

Earendil chuckled and headed over to join Shiro.
The neko was intent in his studies, but he looked over his shoulder as the two joined him by the foliage.
"It's amazing," he murmured. "It's as if we've walked into the Amazon ... but without the insane humidity or bugs. The plants are identical, at least here ... and who knows what it's like further in?"
Suddenly there was a strange squawking sound from deeper into the jungle, and Shiro looked forward intently, his ears flicking back and forth. "That was no bird I've ever heard," he murmured.
There was of course the possibility that it wasn't a bird then ... he had spent hours in Lore's library at the computers, learning about different bird calls from around the world, listening to samples on the headphones.

Lin frowned, "Maybe it's one unique to this world."
For all the similarities were were differences they were just hard to find at times.
"Though it does sound odd."

Shiro shrugged. "Who knows?" He turned back to the jungle and smiled. "I can't wait until we can start exploring," he murmured. "But yes ... we have to make sure it's safe first ..."
Earendil pointed off into the foliage. "Look, Lin," he smiled softly. "Butterflies."
Butterflies indeed ... two of them, one the size of Earendil's fist, and the other the size of his outstretched palm. The smaller one was a shimmery purple, while the larger one had red on the underside of its wings, and blue on the top.

Lin's eyes widen at the sight of them, they were so large. Sure she had large butterflies, but she had always figured it was because they were part fox as well, but she had never seen normal butterflies that large.
Will you come here? She thought as she watched them.
It was one of the few times she wanted them to come, even though they might not have anything, then again if they had nothing to give they wouldn't come and she knew that.
"They're very pretty, especially the purple one."

"They are," Earendil murmured as if he were afraid of frightening the little creatures away. "Much more beautiful than the ones in the courtyard at home ..."
Shiro stared at the butterflies. "They're like ... morphos ... but ... bigger," he mused, tilting his head thoughtfully.

"They say tropical places tend to make things big," Lin commented.
She didn't know if this was true or not but she had noticed anything that had come from a tropical place if it was a larger version it often came from a tropical clime.
"Though they're not coming over here I don't think so they don't have anything."
Which was to be expected, it wasn't like there were people on this island right? Well she didn't know that.
"If there are people living here, they would be our best bet before running into anyone," Lin nodded at them.

Earendil looked over at Lin. "You can talk to all butterflies?" he asked. "Even if they don't speak any of the languages that you do?"
He shrugged. "I mean, it stands to reason, if there were any people out here, they would probably speak a language that none of us could understand."

"Butterflies they don't talk, it's as if...." Lin paused trying to explain it.
One would think she could explain this by now, having experienced it many times over.
"It's as if they gathered up all the voices of people who do talk, and they need to unburden it. What I hear isn't them, it's the voices of anyone they've come in contact with, if they were around when a conversation was occurring they would bring it back. It's the reason why I learned common elvish, a good portion of Haven's fighters talk in that dialect anyways."
She shrugged a bit, though she knew the people would probably be talking in a different language.
"While it's not helpful to understand, if there are people on this island their voices will carry on their wings."

"True," Earendil admitted. "I had forgotten about that. I suppose I'm just so caught up in the idea of knowing what's being said around me."
He paused and looked around. "I suppose it's just a bit strange, the idea of not knowing a language that might be spoken around me," he murmured. "I have learned every language in the Four Lands ..."
He smiled at Lin. "Learning experience, indeed."

Almost every language, Lin didn't want to point out he didn't learn the ancient tongue because of a promise she had made to Aragost. Of course Lin also knew a thing or two about the ancient tongue so she quite understood why he (Aragost) had been so worried about her learning it.
"Well, we have Shiro if it's a completely new language," Lin replied looking over at Shiro, "You learned a thing or two about linguistics because of your father right?"
She knew Lore the librarian had a thing about languages, and did enough translation where it never seemed like he was out of work.
