Then he had a thought. "Who's walking who home?" he mused.

"I drove here and am staying off the alcohol for that reason. I can give you a lift if you want." Hayate then looked at the time on his phone and sighed. "Great. Once again I'm called to the most random of places only to be dumped by the same people who invited me."

Nathan leant forward to hold his hand in a comforting gesture. "Did Claire and her friend just text you? Or was it simply an observation?"
The Angel gave a soft smile. "Either way, I'm glad we met, and I won't ditch you until one of us absolutely has to leave..."

"Well, I have to go to work early tomorrow. Plus I have practice that afternoon, and I have to do my community service at that huge a** hospital on the other side of town. I don't really like it since I'm not too good with kids and old people. To top it off, HE works there so I have to constantly avoid him."

Nathan frowned. "You're not good with children?! Did you even meet M-HIM? Surely you can't be worse than he is - scares them half to death, then I have to try and make them not so scared of him!"
He shook his head. "But are you singing for the senior citizens or - what?"

"Physical therapy and talking to them mostly. I sing to some of the kids to get them to fall asleep, but that's about it." He then thought about what Nathan had said about Mao. "He is? Well, now maybe. When I first met him, he was actually really great with the kids. He was like Super Daddy or something. He hated when I pointed it out though. I think he had it pretty bad when he was younger, so he used to try to give them what he never had. Of course I'm sure his life couldn't have been that bad. I mean, he looks like he came from a rich family. There's nothing that could make him anything more than an ordinary human just like me and you. The only thing that's wrong with that guy is his hideous attitude. He acts like he doesn't care about anything and he denies that he doesn't like guys even though I know all too well he does, and he's... Ahhhh! A big pain in the butt!"

Nathan found that a reluctant grin had risen to his lips, along with the desire to march over to Mao and cuddle him into submission. Sure, his past could have been as terrible as Hayate had alluded, but that didn't mean he had to try and scare the kids - what had happened to 'Super Daddy'?
The Angel determined to find out, but since he wasn't dating Mao - the Demon hadn't wanted to, even before Nathan had offered - he saw no point in not dating (or at least seeing) Hayate.
"Hmmm. Well, he definitely is a pain in the butt, but perhaps slack could be cut when he isn't actually in excellent annoyance form?" Nathan suggested.

Nathan swallowed a laugh and choked on it. Mao had looked after him, and never mind that he'd been surly as hell about it!

Hayate laughed again. "I can tell you still want to have some type of faith in that guy, but I'm telling you... It's better if you just forget all about it. You can sell your soul and wish he was different, but that'll never happen."

Nathan shrugged. "I doubt I'd have to sell my soul - it's more a general hope in humanity, really, so he's thrown in for good measure. I'd do the same for anyone else who showed an ounce of worth - some people don't deserve that kind of faith or aid, but he definitely is not in that category..."
