I'm free from school... Just for today - Home sick Dx
But... I have a tip. if you're serious about learning Japanese...
Do. Not. Mess. With. Romaji. It's an epic waste of time and just dampers your learning. Learn the Hiragana and Katakana and don't worry about the words written in westerner characters (abc et cetera). Katakana is easy to remember - link the character to the sound.
I mean, yes sometimes Romaji is easier to use to translate through characters to easy to understand English or from English to writeable Japanese for those out there with little Katakana/Hiragana printed sound/symbol guides.
I do have to say that I am much better at linking the words I hear in a song to English than the characters to the English or characters to sound.
Write in it. Write in Katakana as often as possible, even if it's just one word like... Neko or a name. However, the written language is comprised of symbols for a whole word or group of words and Katakana and Hiragana. In grade school, students learns base-characters for words and words - all that to build up a memory of the symbols for different words.
For example, the word "child" can be written as one simpler character from Katakana or a slightly more complex of Hiragana. I'm not sure if there is an actual symbol character for child as there is with... "tree" or "forest" or "revolution."
It does seem a bit overwhelming, but somehow... The characters just seem to fit after a while.
(this next part swings more towards Chinese but it makes sense)
Chinese isn't as complicated as it seems like it is. If you actually take a look at the symbol for one thing like "mouth" it is very similar to "speech" or "talk" or even "sound" I know this because I have studied a simple Chinese character book that I once found in my mother's classroom. sweatdrop
The same thing is true with the word "eye." It is very similar to "sight" or "see" or "watch"
The point is not to build it up as something huge, and it becomes easy.

I haven't used hiragana in forever. I used to write out the romaji lyrics I knew out in hira... then I stopped, cause my Japanese groupies aren't at my high school, and everyone I know automatically assumes that if they can't read it, it's definitely Chinese. So, I feel like a social outcast for using it... ;_;
And what you're talking about, how similar kanji have similar meaning? O 3o They do, actually. Each kanji is made up of pieces called 'radicals.' The majority of radicals are actually simple kanji that you're supposed to learn early on. As you learn more, you're supposed to be able to look at a new kanji and be able to get a vague idea of what it is. Kind of like root words in English. :3
And the other half of learning Japanese is the grammar particles, which is incredibly simple compared to English... but confusing if you haven't taken another simple language, like Latin... e_e

If I plan on taking French in high school, I probably will never be able to learn Japanese unless you teach me, Aly. :<
All I know how to read are like, 4-5 symbols? I can read ri, ru, me, de, tsu, te, to, sa, OKAY I PROBABLY CAN READ SOME BASIC ONES.
