When Elnara returned to the living room only a few short minutes later, she was wearing a thick turtleneck sweater instead of the blanket, and she had pulled on a pair of woolen socks (as much as she hated the feeling of something on her feet, even she had to admit that they did help her to keep warmer). She had left the blanket in the bedroom, having discovered that the turtleneck was as warm as she had been promised.

"Did I hear Alyse say that lunch is ready?" she asked Lore, waiting for him near the kitchen door.

Lore nodded padding over to join her, taking her hand so they could enter the kitchen together.

"The syrup should be almost done, she said it was still a bit thick but by the time we get there it should be fine."

Elnara broke into a wide smile. "Well, considering the temperature outside, and the fact that we keep it in the cellar," she laughed, "that makes sense."

She squeezed his hand warmly. "I think I could get used to having someone taking care of us."

She giggled again and tugged him towards the kitchen. Now that she was warmer, her movements were far smoother, easier, and less laboured. She could feel the difference, and she made up her mind then and there that she would try her best to keep as warm as she could during the coming month.

Alyse was busy removing the syrup from the fire when Lore and Elnara entered the kitchen, and she smiled brightly and motioned for them to head over to the dining table.

"Go on, take a seat," she urged them, "I'll have everything there in just a second!"

The table was already set for two, and there was a plate between the two settings that had a second plate over it, upside down, and steam escaping from between them.

Lore pulled out a chair for Elnara.

"You're not joining us?" Lore inquired.

He had noted that there were only two placements.

Alyse shook her head as she poured the syrup into a small pouring cup and brought it over to the table.

"Mama made sure that I ate before I came," she explained with a smile, "so don't worry about me. I'll join you for dinner tonight, though. Do you have any preferences for what you would like to eat?"

Elnara took a seat and smiled up at Lore. "I don't have any, not today anyways," she answered Alyse's question. "What about you, Lore?"

There were days, she had to admit, when there were certain foods that she craved ... but today seemed to be better than most days, because as hungry as she was, she wasn't craving any one thing. Which was especially good because once in a whlie she would crave something that could only be found in Gaia, and was therefore unattainable.

Lore had to admit he had no real preference at least nothing he said he actually wanted. Not to mention he was still somewhat learning the sort of dishes that could be made here.

"Not anything I can think of," Lore replied.

Besides it felt odd requesting certain meals.

"All right then," Alyse smiled. "I'll just snoop around the cellar later on and see what I can whip up - and I'll help Adanedhel put everything away later on, don't you worry about a thing. And no, Elnara, don't you even think about going down the cellar, not for a good long while - at this stage it would be way to easy for you to slip and fall, and the last thing anyone would want is for you to lose the baby. So from now on, you let me take care of things, all right?"

Elnara smiled sheepishly and nodded.

"I agree," she said softly: and then she laughed. "Though soon enough I don't think you'll even have to worry about me trying to climb that ladder ... Not if I can help it anyways!"

How did Alyse know? Lore had to wonder, or perhaps it was something Alyse observed in her own mother, seeing as she was hold enough to have seen her little brother born. Or maybe she had been told stories.

"Is there anything I can do?"
PostPosted: Sat Oct 04, 2008 12:51 pm

Alyse looked at Lore through half-lidded eyes and nodded shortly.

"You can make sure Elnara doesn't overwork herself," she replied. "Shael was really bad for that too, and look where it got her. Doesn't matter how, you just have to make sure she gets enough rest."

Suddenly there was another knock at the door, and Alyse looked over her shoulder. "You go ahead and start eating," she told Lore and Elnara, "I'll get that. It's probably Adanedhel with more wood ... though it's a bit early for them to be back from hunting ..."

And she headed off to get the door.

Elnara blushed hotly at Alyse's response to Lore's question, and she deemed it best just to start eating and not protest at all. Could she help it if she was feeling restless? It was those nesting instincts, she just needed to do something sometimes.

"She's certainly been through the process before, hasn't she?" she ventured after pouring syrup on her hotcakes. She passed it to Lore.

"I think it was Shael she had been looking after," Lore replied softly as he took the syrup and poured some on his own hotcakes.

At least that's the impression he had gotten, she had known far too well about the sort of things Elnara would want to do. Even though he knew she was right, but let's face it. They hadn't expected Elnara to get pregnant (then again hadn't thought about children until the day they arrived) and so they hadn't prepared anything for Elnara to do.

"She certainly sounded like she had been through the process before," he added cutting up a bit and taking a bite.

Maybe he could read Elnara things... but that wouldn't do.... he didn't have stories unless he knew some off by heart. Were there any puzzles he could make to keep her occupied? What could Elnara do that wouldn't make her twitchy with the need to do something?

Elnara nodded. "I've noticed she keeps making references to Shael," she agreed. "She must have been the one to stay with her ... like Shael used to always stay with Aliya and help her out."

She took a bite and chewed thoughtfully. "At first I thought she might be a little young, but wasn't Shael only nine or so when Adanedhel was born?"
