Nye waved a hand in front of Ivie's face hesitantly, and upon receiving no response, dropped his kit on the table and unzipped it loudly. Lizzie, of course, didn't stop her running, and instead got more excited, but Nye withdrew his hairties and brush again and went behind the couch to start work.
"Earth to Callaghan," he said. Keeping her away from thinking about a certain convict would probably be a really good idea right then and there. Or she'd be in a crappy mood all day, and he couldn't have that, now could he?

Dropping the kit on the table served to jerk Ivie out of her little daze, though she kept quiet and simply closed her eyes and enjoyed the attention. Still, her mind kept wandering. Saying she'd go to the police station last night was one thing but the thought of actually going there, close to Butch again, was beginning to terrify her. She still ached from the day before, worse now really, and her neck had settled into a nasty purple mottled colour where his hand had pressed down on her. It was amazing she'd slept soundly last night but she knew that, home alone tonight, it would be a different story.
Her eyes, watery, opened when Nye called her name, and she swallowed once or twice before replying. "Nye...could you come here a minute?" The man obliged, like he always seemed to, and plonked down next to her. Another minute or so passed before Ivie scooted closer, wrapping her arms around him gingerly. She wasn't sure if he'd mind - Butch had only ever hugged her when he wanted sex - so she hoped Nye wouldn't get the wrong idea but...she needed a little fuss right now.

Well, mission failed.
A long, drawn out sigh slipped out from Nye's lips as he set his hairbrush aside. He wasn't used to his lady friends hugging him if they were upset, since, you know, he had very limited ways of handling problems, but since he'd actually seen what went on in her life previously ... it was more like an obligation.
She needed to relax, definitely, and Nye'd have to ensure that she did, or she'd live in a panic for a very long time. He let his arms wrap around her tiny frame in more of a comforting manner than anything, and one of his hands stroked her hair gently. She needed a hug and lots of hot cocoa and a lot of attention right now.
And a restraining order, but he'd bring that up later.

She did register the sigh but when Nye's arms wrapped around her, she just clung to him. Physical contact was something she wasn't used to but when upset, it was a natural reaction to want to cling to someone safe. Nye, in Ivie's mind, was safe. Strange, considering that it was another man that got her into this condition.
Her shoulder shook a little as she cried, despite her valient efforts to hold back her tears. She just didn't feel right; safe, but not right. She couldn't remember when she last did feel 'right', couldn't even remember what that felt like, and it was all starting to catch up to her.
A few minutes passed before Ivie almost jerked away, as if burned. "Oh gods, I'm sorry, you don't have to do this I'm sorry you jsut wanted to do my hair....s**t..." One hand reached up to hold her head, as if she was in pain. She wasn't, not really, but she just felt so...almost sick. So sick of this.

Nye was one of those people who didn't really talk to comfort people. He just... did stuff.
Pulling up from the couch, he evaded Lizzie gnawing on her toy and went straight to the kitchen. The quickest (and safest) way to make hot cocoa, he knew, was to microwave it. And so the cup of water went, into the microwave for two minutes.
Smart enough to grab the handle with a paper towel after it heated, Nye set the mug on the counter and emptied a packet of cocoa mix into the hot water, and stirred it with a teaspoon. It smelled chocolatey enough, and even had little marshmallows in it! Making sure not to spill, Nye brought the mug over to Ivie as soon as it was done, and presented it to her paper towel and all. "Careful, it's hot."

When Nye had left the sofa Ivie had really begun quiet, though years of practise helped her to keep the sobs to an almost silent level. She felt so horribly, horribly guilty for inconviniencing Nye this way and, in the little prison of her own head, was starting to imagine that Nye must be getting sick of her two. Much like the previous night the girl moved onto her side, pulling her pillow to her chest and rubbing at her eyes furiously. They were red by now, she could feel it.
Good thing she'd called off work today, breaking down like this in the middle of a shift would have been horribly embaressing.
She could smell the chocolate and normally she'd be extatic but today, it made her stomache roll. Her head shook as Nye held it out to her, a badly shaking hand not even trying to take it. "No thank you...sorry..."
Ivie Callaghan saying no to sweets? Something was deffinately wrong here.

Nye set the chocolate down on his table, and instead fleed to the linens closet to pull out a blanket and the teddy bear he had brought out last time. Promptly returning to the couch, Nye draped the blanket on top of Ivie and handed her the bear to cling to as she would.
Girl'd have to get used to the silent treatment because, let's be honest here, Nye Hemmingway does not know how to comfort girls. Especially traumatized ones. But he tries his best.

Did anyone really know how to comfort traumatised girls? Probably not, unless you were a shrink, but Nye was doing relatively well really. The blanket helped immensely - as mentioned previously, when threatened, Ivie tended to retreat into enclosed spaces, and the blanket served to enclose her - and the teddy-bear, well, who didn't like teddy-bears? Curling up, along with Nye's helpful bedtime comforts, had let Ivie calm a little and when Nye sat down near her head, unsure as what to do with himself, Ivie scooted a little closer and rested her head against his leg.
Normally she wouldn't have ever considered going near a man's lap like that. I'll let you guess what Butch did. Right now, however, she just needed some contact.

When Nye sat down, he really wasn't expecting her to move or anything, but then she just went on and cuddled up closer to him. Not that he minded, I'll let you know, but he was surprised.
Unlike what Butch would have done, in any case, Nye reached his hand over and kept playing with her hair in the most nonchalant of manners. He never had to deal with anything of these proportions, and would hate to do it again in the near future (but, of course, would if necessary). He hoped he was being a good enough crutch, anyways.

Curled up under a blanket, with a teddy bear, Ivie felt very much like a sleepy child as Nye began playing with her hair. It was calming, really, and her breathing began to slow as she started to relax. One hand was curled around the material at Nye's knee, as if she was scared he might try and wander off some where, and it was too bad if he needed the loo or anything. Ivie didn't move for the next half an hour, and by then her shaking appeared to have stopped.
By the time she sat up, rubbing at her eyes again, she had the decency to look a little embaressed. "I....um...sorry..." What else could you say, really? She hiccuped, covering her mouth with three fingers in surprise, before reaching out and finally drinking the (now cold) cocoa. Awkwarrrrrd~

Nye honestly preferred to avoid awkward situations by all means possible. Once Ivie sat up, he very casually crossed his legs and waved her apology off as nothing. "Always here to help," he said as he reached for the remote. Maybe there'd be something distracting on TV.
Nye avoided the news at all costs, simply out of habit, and went right to the movie channels. Lo and behold, he knew none of the movies that were actually on. The Last Unicorn sounded interesting, so he settled on that. Maybe it'd be some fancy cartoon or something.
And... it was.

Nursing her chocolate, Ivie pulled her knees to her chest and didn't apologise any further, instead turning her attention to the movie. She'd seen it many times before, it had been one of her favourites as a child, so it didn't matter to her that they'd missed the first fifteen minutes. Nye might have been confused as to why she was in a cage with a fake horn and there was a scary lady with a vulture, but Ivie wasn't.
Unlike with Wall-E, Ivie was silent for the film, and stretched out once the ending song began to roll. "I love that movie..." She said, content now with a full belly of chocolate and a bitter-sweet movie soundtrack in her head. She then flopped, her head leaning against the back of the sofa as she stared at the ceiling.
"I should probably go down to the station..." There was a cheerful thought.

"Mm? Oh, right."
Nye stood from the couch and stretched. The TV went off with a click of the remote, and silence ensued in the room once more. It was surprisingly... not awkward, though. "Go get your coat on, I'll drive you."

"You don't have to, you know." Came Ivie's normal responce, but it was half-hearted. The thought of taking the bus right now - being crammed in with so many people - was terrifying to the poor girl, and the sanctuary of Nye's car rather appealling. Damn, girl. You're getting spoilt.
They trundled down the stairs a few minutes later - Ivie having borrowed one of Nye's multiple scarves to hide her bruised neck - and slid into his awfully fancy car. Neither seemed inclined to really talk during the trip, so the radio played quietly in the background. It was a surprisingly quick trip.
Ivie left Nye to sit in one of the waiting room seats while she talked quietly to the receptionist. It would take a few minutes to get the 'off work' forms but it shouldn't be long, could Ivie wait in the office over there? She sent Nye a quick smile and went where told.

Nye was almost nervous when he saw her go into an office by herself. This is a station, he told himself. She's safe here.
"Hemmingway?"
Nye woke from his stupor with a start and looked up to see a familiar face looming over him. Officer Geoffrey, also known to fifth graders as MacGuff the Crime Dog, was giving Nye the strangest look. "The hell are you doing here? Finally caught?" came the low whisper. Nye looked around quickly, and then just shook his head.
"'M here for a friend." Geoffrey's palm flew up to his face. Hemmingway was known to be a risk-taker, yes, but coming into a police station with his night job? Not exactly safe. At all. "Christ," he mumbled. "Don't blame me when you end up locked up."
Nye stuck his tongue out at Geoffrey when he turned to leave, and sat there like a nervous frump. A part of him hoped that Butch was getting a taste of the butt pirate treatment in whatever cell he was locked in.
