Hermonie Urameshi crystal_moon098 I think that "beginner" was a key word there Three months of serious study. I think I'm still a beginner. How come hardly anyone uses kana? Because most people are too lazy to deal with learning a whole new alphabet, much less two plus kanji. I know all of hiragana, but since I don't see katakana as often, I don't remember it as well. I know most of it though... razz And really really basic kanji. Anyways, most people "learn to speak " rather than "learn ", which I think is annoying. I mean, I want to learn to both speak AND write. It's useless, else. How many people at school can I speak Japanese with? Russian? There's one other Spanish student who will speak Spanish, and my roommate (a frenchie) can understand it when I speak. That's it. He can also understand some of my Russian, because we're both total n008s. Japanese? Totally out. There's a Chinese kid who knows some... enough for us to call each other idiots and wander back out of the room.
People don't realize that if you don't learn both, you're not getting anything out of it until you get to the country... and then you're still useless if you're illiterate. How many Japanese people can't read their own language? As competitive as that country must be--it's a small place, the job market's not exactly wide open--they can't afford to take on some American bum, ne?
I actually picked up "ne" from Ender's Game and dropped the h... before I started learning Japanese rolleyes I love irony.
Sorry to rant sweatdrop

If you can't read Japanese you'll have a really hard time in Japan. I think of exactly what I was going to say, but you definately won't have a very pleasurable time if can't at least read both hiragana and katakana. At least according to Aiko san. And it's stupid to not use kana when you teach it first.

Kids (12 and under) cannot read kanji in Japan that is why you see small kana placed next to a kanji a lot in books (like manga).

Well actually they know alot..starting in 1st grade you learn basics like numbers and thinks like moon, sun, fire, etc...So with each grade they keep learning more...But year they do put furigana in alot of books anyways i guess..not that I'm complaining makes it much easier for me to read them.. xd

I got those from a native and she put them in that order. And they need the simpler kanji to learn the harder ones.

I fail first grade. I know a few... Hermonie Urameshi Normally a twelve year old would know about this many kanjiForgedawn knows this many of a 12-year-old's kanji vocab: Grade 1 一 人 八 力 十 九 二 七 土 女 大 子 山 千 三 日 水 木 円 火 中 月 五 天 六 白 目 生 四 本 糸 字 年 名 学 林 森 Grade 2 何 間 語 Grade 3 息 Grade 4 愛 And that's it. Only know 愛 because everyone plasters it all over themselves rolleyes I don't know how to say most of them, just meaning (besides the fact that 8 is also ha, etc, ni is 2 is ni razz )... actually, I do know how to say most of them, but I don't know all the ways. Bah. Whatever. I knew more than I thought I did, adn I know some that weren't here. Like cat and mouse. and I. And since I have to go take something to my teacher, I don't have time to go get those. meahwcoia. *falls back asleep* Break's over. 'tis suck.

I was surfing around the internet for free kanji learning games and I found this really good one where you can learn kanji and it's kana, and have different ways to learn them. Ex: Kanji -> English, Kana -> Kanji (or more advanced) Kanji -> Kana.
You can even pick grades and levels. It's really cool. biggrin

Sorry to rant sweatdrop Well yes, it is pointless to not learn how to read Japanese if your studying the language. Now if just on vacation for a few days then I can understand why some just want to learn to just speak abit of Japanese but if you plan to stay in Japan for a long time then you should learn to read it as well, it will be a big help. I know hiragana and katakana (though sometimes I forget some, mainly it's the katakana that I forget at times). I know some Kanji but still have alot more to learn. I'm learning to both read and write it cause i'm planning to be a translator.
